Shopify Plus vs Enterprise Platforms

Is Salesforce Commerce Cloud's built-in B2B/B2C unification still a real advantage over Shopify Plus now that B2B is native on all Shopify plans?

Short answer

Salesforce's business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) unification is still real but narrower, because Shopify B2B runs on every plan "at no extra cost" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Salesforce B2B Commerce runs B2B and direct-to-consumer (D2C) channels "from a single Salesforce org with shared data and processes" (Salesforce Help, October 2026). Unification pays only when Salesforce runs the customer relationship.

Deploi’s call

The unification advantage is real, and it is narrower than it was, because the thing it used to beat was Shopify's Plus-gated business-to-business (B2B). On plan availability, that gap is closed. What remains is a customer relationship management (CRM) advantage, and it pays only when the CRM genuinely runs the commercial relationship.

BuyChoose Salesforce B2B Commerce when

  • Your sales team already runs accounts, contracts and service in Salesforce, so buyer groups and entitlements sit on records you keep anyway.
  • Negotiated product sets overlap, so one account needs several buyer groups: 20 by default, and more with Apex code, Salesforce's programming language (Salesforce Developers, October 2026).
  • Your organization has standardized on Salesforce, which Deploi's enterprise platform record counts as a requirement outside software as a service (SaaS) (October 2026).

WaitStay on Shopify while

  • Wholesale and direct-to-consumer (D2C) share one catalog and one merchandising team, which one Shopify store handles on any plan.
  • Your customer data lives outside Salesforce, so "one org" would start with a data migration.
  • You need a price before the sales call: Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 a month on a 3-year term (Shopify, October 2026).

Which Salesforce product carries the B2B and B2C unification?

Salesforce B2B Commerce carries the unification of business-to-business (B2B) and direct-to-consumer (D2C) selling, not B2C Commerce. Salesforce says the B2B Commerce platform can "operate both a B2B and D2C channel from a single Salesforce org with shared data and processes" (Salesforce Help, October 2026). B2B Commerce runs on Developer, Unlimited and Enterprise editions, with stores built in Experience Builder.

B2C Commerce, for business-to-consumer (B2C) selling, is a different product. It came from Demandware, which Salesforce bought in 2016 and relaunched as Salesforce Commerce Cloud (Salesforce, July 2016). Salesforce still prices B2B and B2C as separate editions. Commerce Cloud B2C Premium is "For businesses selling to consumers", and Commerce Cloud B2B Growth Edition is "For businesses selling to businesses" (Salesforce pricing, October 2026).

So a comparison that credits B2C Commerce with B2B unification compares the wrong product. The Adobe Commerce and Shopify B2B feature comparison runs the same native-depth test for Adobe.

What does Salesforce's buyer-group model let a B2B team do?

Salesforce's buyer-group model lets one org give each business-to-business (B2B) account its own products and prices. A buyer group is "A group of buyers with the same assigned entitlement policies, price books, and products" (Salesforce Developers, October 2026). An entitlement policy links buyer groups to products, with separate CanViewProduct and CanViewPrice fields. Salesforce describes three set-ups: buyer tiers, a price book per buyer, and product-based access where an account joins several groups (Salesforce Help, October 2026).

Source: Salesforce Developers (Shopper Buyer Groups and Accounts Data Limits). Verified October 9, 2026.Salesforce marks each figure a soft limit "that can be increased by contacting Salesforce customer support" (Salesforce Developers, October 2026).

A Shopify catalog, by contrast, either includes a product or not, which is why per-account visibility rules flatten on Shopify.

What changed on the Shopify side now that B2B runs on every plan?

Shopify business-to-business (B2B) now runs on every plan, so one Shopify store can sell wholesale and direct-to-consumer (D2C) without Plus. Shopify says B2B features are "included at no extra cost" on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Its Plus page pitches running "your wholesale and direct-to-consumer business from one place" (Shopify, October 2026).

  • Plus only. Unlimited catalogs, direct company catalogs, deposits, partial payments and payment requests per fulfillment (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • Advanced and Plus. Checkout and storefront customization by market, which Shopify calls contextual checkout and storefront, through Shopify Markets (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • Fees. Where a variable platform fee applies, B2B and D2C orders carry different rates (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

So the claim that you need an enterprise platform to run wholesale and consumer selling together is false at the plan level on Shopify. One person who buys both wholesale and retail stays one Shopify customer record.

Where does Shopify's one-store model stop short of Salesforce?

Shopify's one-store model stops short of Salesforce in three places: checkout, entitlements and the customer relationship management (CRM) link.

  • Checkout. Shopify lists accelerated checkouts such as Shop Pay, local delivery, pickup points, subscriptions and agentic storefronts, its selling inside AI assistants, as incompatible with business-to-business (B2B) checkout (Shopify Help Center and Shopify, October 2026). Local delivery and pickup in store still work on B2B draft orders that staff create in the admin. So one store still runs two checkout experiences.
  • Entitlements. A Salesforce account joins up to 20 buyer groups (Salesforce Developers, October 2026). On Plus, a Shopify company location takes up to 25 catalogs; below Plus, 3 active catalogs cover all B2B markets (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • The CRM link. Buyer groups and entitlement policies are Salesforce objects, so the access model and the account model are the same records. A Shopify integration copies that relationship; it does not share it.

That third point is why the advantage now depends on who runs the customer relationship, not on plan availability.

When should unification not decide the platform?

Unification should not decide the platform when the catalogs are different businesses, when one customer record is really a data project, or when nobody has priced Salesforce.

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

Where we disagree
"Unified B2B and B2C" gets sold as an architecture benefit. It is mostly an org-chart benefit. If marketing and sales run separately, one platform does not merge them, and if they run together, two platforms rarely stop them.
What we look for first (our judgment)
The strongest Salesforce commerce cases we encounter are not commerce cases. They are account-management cases, where the order is one event in a relationship the sales team already runs in Salesforce.
What this page adds
That Salesforce ships two distinct commerce products and the unification claim belongs to only one of them, plus the published buyer-group soft limits that show where the model is genuinely enterprise-scale. The parent compares Adobe; this page corrects the most common Salesforce misattribution.

When this answer changes

  • Salesforce publishes a list price for any Commerce Cloud edition, or changes the Premier Success Plan's 30% of net license fees.
  • Salesforce changes its buyer-group soft limits or moves D2C selling out of the B2B Commerce product.
  • Shopify makes accelerated checkouts, subscriptions or agentic storefronts compatible with B2B.
  • Shopify raises the 3-catalog cap below Plus or opens direct company catalogs on other plans.
  • Shopify changes the Plus price of $2,300 a month on a 3-year term.
