Shopify Plus vs Enterprise Platforms

Does Adobe Commerce's native B2B feature depth (RFQ, negotiable quotes, multi-level approvals, requisition lists) still beat Shopify Plus B2B in 2026?

Short answer

Adobe Commerce still beats Shopify on native business-to-business (B2B) depth in 2026. Adobe ships negotiable quotes, multi-level purchase order approvals and requisition lists (Adobe Experience League, October 2026); Shopify's B2B overview names none of them (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Adobe publishes no price (Adobe's pricing page, October 2026), so only Shopify's starting price is known before a sales call.

Deploi’s call

Yes: Adobe Commerce still beats Shopify on native business-to-business (B2B) depth in 2026, and we won't pretend otherwise. We score request-for-quote (RFQ) quoting and B2B approvals BUILD on Shopify, because Shopify has no native equivalent (Deploi decision records, October 2026). What changes the answer is that Shopify's gap is a scoped, finite build, while Adobe's total cost stays unknown until you're three sales calls deep.

BuildMove to Shopify and build the gaps when

  • Most business-to-business (B2B) orders are reorders against agreed price lists, which Shopify handles on every plan (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • Negotiation sits with a few accounts. Our RFQ and quoting record scores the quote flow BUILD on draft orders (October 2026).
  • Approval chains matter to some accounts, not all. Our approvals record scores spend limits and approval chains BUILD (October 2026).
  • Nobody on your team maintains Adobe Commerce code, and you don't plan to hire for it.

BuyStay on Adobe Commerce when

  • Most B2B revenue starts as a negotiable quote and ends with named approvers, which Adobe runs natively (Adobe Experience League, October 2026).
  • Buyers order from requisition lists week to week.
  • Your organization is standardized on Adobe's wider stack, a requirement outside software as a service (SaaS) that our enterprise platform record scores BUY (October 2026).

Basis: Adobe Commerce vs. Shopify Plus: Do You Need an Enterprise Platform?, our Build vs. Buy decision record, scored WAIT.

Which B2B workflows does Adobe Commerce ship that Shopify doesn't?

Adobe Commerce ships three business-to-business (B2B) workflows that Shopify doesn't: negotiable quotes, purchase order approvals and requisition lists (Adobe Experience League, October 2026). Shopify's B2B overview names no quote, approval rule or requisition list (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Shopify has run core B2B on every plan since 2 April 2026 (Shopify Changelog, October 2026), so the gap is the same on Basic as on Plus.

Adobe Commerce on Cloud, the platform-as-a-service (PaaS) edition, and self-hosted installs get the three workflows from the B2B extension, v1.5.3 since 12 May 2026 (Adobe Experience League, October 2026). Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service, the software-as-a-service (SaaS) edition, comes "Pre-installed with core B2B features" (Adobe Experience League, October 2026).

How multi-level are Adobe Commerce approvals compared with Shopify's draft review?

Adobe Commerce approvals are multi-level by order value, while Shopify's draft review is one merchant-side gate. Adobe approval rules trigger on the order total "including tax", the shipping cost or the number of stock-keeping units (SKUs). Each rule names "one or more required approvers", and a rule can require approval by the buyer's manager (Adobe Experience League, October 2026). When several rules apply, "all unique required approvers must approve it" (Adobe Experience League, October 2026). Adobe's own example sends a $25,000 order to the buyer's manager and, because it tops $10,000, to the V.P. as well. Adobe doesn't say in which order approvers act, so commercetools' tiered approval rules remain the stricter sequential model.

Shopify business-to-business (B2B) roles stop at "Ordering only" and "Location admin" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). The one native gate is set per company location: "Submit all orders as drafts for review" or "Automatically submit orders". Shopify's B2B overview names no spend limit and no approval rule (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), which means a manager approval chain on Shopify is a build.

What does closing the quote and approval gap on Shopify take?

Closing the business-to-business (B2B) quote and approval gap on Shopify takes a build on draft orders for most mid-market sellers, because neither workflow is native. Shopify's draft review lets you "review and make changes to orders before they’re confirmed, and negotiate with your customer when needed". A price lock then holds the agreed price (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Our request-for-quote (RFQ) and quoting record scores the missing quote request form and approval layer BUILD on those draft orders (October 2026). Our approvals record scores per-buyer spend limits and approval chains BUILD as well. The two Shopify App Store apps that record names for approvals had 0 reviews and 1 review (B2B Company Controls and SelfApprove listings, October 2026). Each record's illustrative estimate is 6 to 10 weeks to deploy; the approvals record adds that cost centers and second approvers take longer.

Buyer-side purchase order (PO) approval belongs to the approvals build, because Shopify's admin purchase orders record stock you buy from suppliers (Shopify Changelog, October 2026). For light quote volume, the RFQ record scores a quote app BUY instead, and BigCommerce B2B Edition ships sales quotes in a custom-priced add-on.

What does B2B cost on each platform before a sales call?

On Shopify, business-to-business (B2B) features cost nothing beyond the plan, while Adobe publishes no price for any Adobe Commerce edition. Shopify's B2B features are "included at no extra cost on the Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Shopify Plus plans" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Below Plus, B2B stops at 3 catalogs, and deposits, partial payments and direct company catalogs stay Plus-only (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 a month on a 3-year term and $2,500 on a 1-year term (shopify.com/plus/pricing, October 2026). Shopify adds that "More complex, higher volume businesses switch to a variable platform fee based on their revenue and business model."

Adobe's pricing page lists Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service, Adobe Commerce on Cloud and Adobe Commerce Optimizer, each with "Get pricing" and no figure (Adobe, October 2026). So you can put Shopify's number in a board deck before a sales call, and Adobe's only after one. Self-hosting adds hosting, patching and Payment Card Industry (PCI) lines, which the self-hosted total cost comparison builds one by one. At $40M to $100M with 30% wholesale, the deciding number is the share of negotiated orders, not the license.

Where else does Adobe Commerce differ from Shopify for a B2B brand?

Adobe Commerce differs from Shopify in three more places a business-to-business (B2B) brand will feel: content staging, customer data and upgrades.

One difference has closed. A blended Shopify store serves B2B and direct-to-consumer (D2C) customers from a single store (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). That is why Salesforce's B2B and D2C unification argument is narrower than it was.

When should a B2B brand stay on Adobe Commerce?

A business-to-business (B2B) brand should stay on Adobe Commerce when native quotes, approvals or requisition lists carry real revenue, not when they demo well.

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

Where we disagree
The category treats "native" as a synonym for "free." It is not. Adobe's B2B features are native and still arrive with an unpublished license, and on Adobe Commerce on Cloud or a self-hosted install, with patches you apply and a three-year support clock. Native means the vendor maintains the feature. It does not mean you stop paying for it.
How we scope it
We ask one question before any demo: what share of last quarter's B2B orders went through a negotiation before becoming an order? When that share is small, the quote workflow is a sales-ops process, not a platform requirement.
What we refuse to quote
An Adobe Commerce license figure. Adobe publishes none, and every third-party number you will find is a reconstruction from somebody's contract. We'll scope the Shopify side line by line and tell you to get Adobe's number in writing before you compare anything.

When this answer changes

  • Shopify adds a native quote, approval rule or per-buyer spend limit to B2B.
  • Adobe publishes a price for any Adobe Commerce edition.
  • Adobe ships a B2B extension release after v1.5.3, or changes the B2B features in Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service.
  • Shopify opens unlimited catalogs, deposits or partial payments below Plus, or changes the $2,300 and $2,500 Plus prices.
  • B2B Company Controls or SelfApprove builds a real review base, which would reopen the approvals record's app-versus-build call.
