Shopify Plus vs Enterprise Platforms

How does Adobe Commerce's native marketing-automation integration (via the Adobe Experience Cloud) compare to Shopify Plus's Klaviyo-centric ecosystem?

Short answer

Adobe Commerce's native Experience Cloud link is the Data Connection extension plus separately licensed Adobe products, so unlike Klaviyo on Shopify, it is not marketing automation itself. The extension needs entitlements to other Adobe products (Adobe Experience League, October 2026); Journey Optimizer shows no price (business.adobe.com, October 2026). Klaviyo lists email from $20 a month (Shopify App Store, October 2026).

Deploi’s call

Adobe Experience Cloud and Klaviyo aren't competitors; they're different purchases. Adobe sells a customer data platform with a commerce connector, and Klaviyo sells commerce lifecycle marketing with a published price. Pick Adobe when the customer profile must outgrow commerce, and Klaviyo when it doesn't.

BuyLicense Adobe's Experience Cloud when

  • The customer record must span stores, a call center, loyalty and service, which Real-Time Customer Data Platform (CDP) is built to hold.
  • Your organization is already standardized on Adobe's stack, a requirement outside software as a service (SaaS) that our enterprise platform record scores BUY (October 2026).
  • A platform team will own Data Connection's schemas, datasets and datastreams (Adobe Experience League, October 2026).

WaitHold off on Adobe's stack while

  • Commerce is the customer record, and marketers, not a platform team, run the campaigns.
  • You want the price before the contract: Klaviyo lists email from $20 a month (Shopify App Store, October 2026).
  • Your event tracking is unreliable, because both paths fail on a broken event layer.

What does "native" mean for Adobe Commerce's Experience Cloud integration?

Native means Adobe Commerce reaches Adobe Experience Cloud through one extension, Data Connection, while the marketing tools it feeds are separate Adobe products. Data Connection "connects your Adobe Commerce web instance to the Adobe Experience Platform and the Edge Network" (Adobe Experience League, October 2026). Data Connection feeds Real-Time Customer Data Platform (CDP), Customer Journey Analytics, Adobe Analytics and Journey Optimizer. Its prerequisites are Adobe Commerce 2.4.4 or newer, an Adobe ID and Organization ID, the Adobe Client Data Layer (ACDL) for storefront events, and entitlements to other Adobe digital experience (DX) products. On Adobe Commerce on Cloud and on-premises, it installs as a separate extension (Adobe Experience League, October 2026). So the plumbing is native, and the destination is a second purchase, one layer up from the business-to-business (B2B) workflows Adobe ships natively.

What does each side publish about price?

Adobe publishes no price for the destinations Data Connection feeds, while Klaviyo prints its price on the Shopify App Store. Journey Optimizer comes in Select, Prime and Ultimate packages, each with "Get pricing" under a "Get customized pricing for Journey Optimizer" heading (Adobe, October 2026). Real-Time Customer Data Platform (CDP) says "Pricing is determined by the amount of profiles that need to be managed" and shows no figure (Adobe, October 2026). Klaviyo's listing gives email free for up to 250 contacts and $20 a month for 251 to 500 (Shopify App Store, October 2026). Klaviyo's text message (SMS) plan starts at $15 a month. Real-Time CDP and Klaviyo both price by profiles or contacts, so model each at next year's list size. How Klaviyo's prices compare with Omnisend's and Attentive's covers the email side in depth.

Does the commerce platform decide the marketing tool?

No: the commerce platform doesn't decide the email and text message (SMS) tool, because Shopify ships its own app and Klaviyo also connects to Adobe Commerce. Shopify's own Shopify Messaging app sends email, SMS and WhatsApp campaigns, and "Your first 10,000 emails each month are free" (Shopify App Store, October 2026). After that, Shopify says "pricing starts at $1/1000 emails per month". Whether a Plus brand should trade Klaviyo for Shopify's own tool has its own answer. Klaviyo, for its part, files its Magento 2 integration under "Adobe Commerce (Magento)" in its help center (Klaviyo Help Center, October 2026). So switching commerce platforms to switch marketing tools is the expensive route.

Where does each approach win?

Adobe's stack wins when the customer record must span more than commerce, and Klaviyo wins on setup time, price visibility and who can run it.

In our judgment, a retailer with stores, a call center, loyalty and service teams has profile data an ecommerce email tool wasn't built to hold, so Adobe's Real-Time Customer Data Platform (CDP) earns its cost there. Adobe also closes a loop inside the store with its optional Audience Activation extension. That extension lets you "build audiences in Real-Time CDP and deploy those audiences to your Commerce store to inform cart price rules, related product rules, and dynamic blocks" (Adobe Experience League, October 2026).

What is the trap on each side?

Adobe's trap is buying the platform for the integration, and Klaviyo's trap is pricing it at today's list size. Data Connection is the cheap part of Adobe's stack; the destination licenses are the program, quoted rather than published (Adobe, October 2026). Klaviyo's price is visible at 500 contacts and climbs with the list (Shopify App Store, October 2026), so the number you evaluate is rarely the number you pay in year three. Model Klaviyo at your projected list size, and model Adobe at the products your use case needs, not the ones in the demo.

When should you leave your marketing stack as it is?

Leave the marketing stack as it is when the problem sits below the tools.

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

Where we disagree
"Native integration" is treated as a decisive advantage in enterprise evaluations. Adobe's own requirements list says the native part is an extension and an Organization ID, and the expensive part is entitlements to other Adobe products. Native describes the plumbing, not the bill.
What we tell clients to do first
Fix instrumentation before you buy either destination. In our judgment the integration is rarely what fails; the event layer underneath it is, and it fails the same way on both platforms.

When this answer changes

  • Adobe publishes a price for Journey Optimizer, Real-Time CDP or any Adobe Commerce edition.
  • Adobe bundles Experience Cloud destinations into an Adobe Commerce edition, or changes Data Connection's prerequisites.
  • Klaviyo's App Store listing switches from SMS credits to dollar rates, or Klaviyo changes the $20 email tier.
  • Shopify changes Shopify Messaging's 10,000 free emails or its $1 per 1,000 rate.
  • Your customer record starts to include store, call center or service data that commerce marketing tools can't hold.
