What's the realistic all-in monthly TCO for a mid-market Shopify Plus merchant running a minimal app stack (just email and reviews) versus one running 15+ apps?
No published figure exists. Here is the honest answer
A 15-app Shopify Plus stack costs more than an email-and-reviews stack by the sum of the extra apps. No published benchmark gives that sum, because Shopify App Store listings stop at entry tiers and overage rates. Klaviyo lists email at $20 a month for 251 to 500 contacts (Klaviyo listing, October 2026). The Gorgias helpdesk charges $900 a month for 5,000 tickets plus $36 per additional 100 (Gorgias listing, October 2026).

Deploi’s call
The cost gap between a minimal and a 15-app Shopify Plus stack is the sum of the extra apps on your own invoices, and no published benchmark prices it. We scored app-stack consolidation CUSTOMIZE rather than BUY precisely because the saving is store-specific and the benchmark is not available (Deploi verdict, September 2026). Buy the audit, not the number.
CustomizeAudit and consolidate the stack when
- Your top five apps by spend include metered ones, priced per contact, ticket or order.
- Two apps do one job, or a metered app runs past its allowance most months.
- Twelve months of app charges sit on one sheet, starting from Shopify's bill as Deploi's app stack audit record does and adding vendors that bill you directly.
WaitHold consolidation while
- The overlapping apps serve different teams with different workflows.
- Peak season is less than a quarter away.
- Nobody has measured each metered app's use against its allowance.
Basis: Should You Build or Buy a Shopify App Stack Audit?, our Build vs. Buy decision record, scored CUSTOMIZE.
Why isn't the App Store price a Shopify Plus merchant's real app cost?
App Store prices are the bottom of each app's ladder, while a mid-market Shopify Plus stack is metered on contacts, orders and tickets. That is the app side of whether Plus with fewer apps beats Advanced at $500K a month, and an email-and-reviews stack shows it:
| App | What the listing publishes (USD) | What a mid-market Plus store needs |
|---|---|---|
| Klaviyo: Email Marketing & SMS | Email $20 a month for 251 to 500 contacts; text messages (SMS) $15 a month for up to 1,250 credits | A price for its own list and message volume |
| Klaviyo: Product Reviews | Free to 50 orders a month; $25 a month for up to 250 orders | A tier for its own monthly orders |
| Gorgias: AI, Helpdesk & Chat | $10 a month for 50 tickets up to $900 a month for 5,000, then $36 per additional 100 | The tier plus overages, set by order volume |
The Klaviyo rows are the trap: “Upgrade as you grow” is an instruction, not a price.
What can honestly be said about the cost gap between a minimal and a 15-app Plus stack?
The honest answer about the cost gap between a minimal and a 15-app Shopify Plus stack is structural: the gap is the sum of the extra apps.
- The gap is the sum of the extra apps, and only your invoices know it. No published benchmark prices a 15-app stack at mid-market scale, which is also why the unused-app overspend answer declines to publish one.
- A few metered apps carry most of the money, in Deploi's judgment. Email, helpdesk, search, subscription and personalization apps price on volume, while utility apps such as a size chart or a back-in-stock notifier price flat and cheap. So a 15-app stack and a 5-app stack can cost about the same if both hold the same metered few.
- Overages move separately from subscriptions. Gorgias's $36 per additional 100 tickets rises with order volume even if you never install another app (Gorgias listing, October 2026). So an audit that counts subscriptions alone reports a flat cost base that is not flat.
How do you find your own app-stack cost in one afternoon?
Find your own Shopify app-stack cost from twelve months of billing records, ranked by spend, in five steps.
- Export twelve months of app charges from Settings > Billing in the Shopify admin, where subscription and usage charges sit on the regular bill. Then add vendor invoices, because “Some third-party apps charge you directly outside of Shopify” (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Sort descending and draw a line under the top five. In Deploi's judgment, the top five carry most of the total, and the rest is noise to stop discussing.
- Find each top-five app's metered unit, such as contacts, tickets, orders, searches or sessions, and its use against the allowance.
- Mark each app overlapping, redundant or load-bearing. Only redundant apps are cancellable this month; overlapping apps are a consolidation project with a migration cost.
- Total the cancellable apps. That sum is the real gap between your stack and a leaner one, and it belongs to your store rather than to a benchmark.
Where does the real cost of a heavy app stack sit?
The real cost of a heavy Shopify app stack sits in the integration surface, not in the subscriptions. Every app that writes to orders, customers or the theme can break at checkout, needs re-testing after a theme update and needs an owner. That work has no invoice and no published rate, which is exactly why it is missing from published comparisons, including the ones that quote a total. Shopify warns that “Too many apps loading assets on your storefront can slow performance” (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). It adds that uninstalling an app “doesn't automatically remove its code from your theme.” So storefront script is the measurable part, and the answer on how many apps is too many sizes it.
When is consolidating a Shopify Plus app stack the wrong move?
Consolidating a Shopify Plus app stack is the wrong move when the overlap serves different teams, when peak is close or when nobody has measured metered usage.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- What we’ve seen
- The top five apps by spend are almost never the top five by perceived importance inside the business, and showing a team that ranked list is usually the most valuable ten minutes of a cost audit.
- Where we disagree
- The standard content in this category publishes two totals, a minimal stack and a heavy stack, and reports the gap. Both totals are built from entry-tier App Store prices that no mid-market merchant pays. The gap between two wrong numbers is not a finding.
- What this page adds
- that App Store listings publish entry prices with usage overages attached, so the app side of the parent's model cannot be sourced from app pages at all, and has to come from Shopify's own invoices plus the vendors that bill outside Shopify.

Related questions
- How much does the typical mid-market Shopify store actually overspend per month on apps that are installed but genuinely unused?
Installed-but-unused Shopify app spend has no credible published benchmark, because the figures in circulation estimate total app spend from listed prices, not bills.
- Is consolidating multiple point-solution apps (email, SMS, reviews, loyalty separately) into fewer platforms with bundled pricing a genuine cost-optimization lever for a mid-market store?
Consolidating point-solution apps is an operations lever at mid-market, not a cost lever, because each channel stays metered.
- How many apps is 'too many' for a mid-market Shopify store before performance and manageability start to suffer?
Ten apps that load storefront code is the practical performance ceiling for a mid-market Shopify store, because other apps cost no load time.
