Common Questions

If our company runs 3 separate brands, do we need 3 separate Shopify Plus contracts at $2,300/month each, or can one contract cover all 3?

Shopify Plus's 9 included expansion stores do not cover three separate brands. Expansion stores must be "extensions of the main brand," identical in store name and branding, and carry the same types of goods (per Shopify Help Center, September 2026). Shopify's published alternative is a multi-brand agreement, which allows multiple brands in one organization but requires each brand to hold its own Plus subscription.

For a merchant doing $500K/month in GMV, is the fully-loaded cost of staying on Advanced with a heavier app stack actually cheaper than upgrading to Plus and consolidating natively?

No honest single total exists for a $500K per month merchant, because Shopify publishes no committed Plus card rate. The published arithmetic runs: plan fee gap $2,001 per month, card rate gap 0.25 points or $1,250 per month at the published floors, net $751 per month more on Plus before any app saving (shopify.com/pricing, September 2026).

What's the actual monthly savings a mid-market merchant sees after replacing a stack of paid apps with the native Shopify features that became free (Subscriptions, B2B) since 2025-2026?

Native Shopify Subscriptions and native B2B remove two recurring app line items outright, and the per-order fee is the bigger half. Recharge Starter costs $99 a month plus 1.49% and $0.19 per transaction; Shopify shipped B2B to every paid plan on April 2, 2026 (both verified September 2026). On $2M of subscription GMV that percentage alone is roughly $30,000 a year.

Is right-sizing down from Plus to Advanced a genuine cost-optimization move for a modest-wholesale merchant now that core B2B is free everywhere, or does it usually backfire?

Downgrading from Shopify Plus to Advanced saves $1,901 to $2,101 a month in platform fees and backfires above roughly $6M in annual GMV for merchants on a third-party gateway, where Shopify's cut rises from 0.20% to 0.6% and cancels the saving (per Shopify's pricing pages, September 2026). Full checkout customization, unlimited B2B catalogs and 10x API limits leave with the plan.

Is Shopify genuinely cheaper in total cost of ownership than BigCommerce Enterprise or Adobe Commerce at the same $50M/year GMV, once all fees are counted?

Shopify is the only one of the three that publishes a plan fee. Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 per month on a three-year term; BigCommerce publishes Performance at $1,499 per month billed annually and nothing for Enterprise; Adobe publishes no Commerce price at all (vendor pricing pages, September 2026). No honest TCO comparison exists at $50M GMV.

For a $5M-$10M/year merchant still on Advanced (not yet Plus), what's the realistic full monthly spend including apps, processing, and a part-time freelance developer?

A $5M to $10M merchant on Advanced pays $299 per month on annual billing or $399 monthly, plus 2.5% and 30 cents per online card transaction, plus Shopify Tax at 0.35% of US orders above $100,000 and capped at $5,000 a year (shopify.com/pricing and Shopify Help Center, September 2026). Developer cost has no published rate.
