What's the actual monthly savings a mid-market merchant sees after replacing a stack of paid apps with the native Shopify features that became free (Subscriptions, B2B) since 2025-2026?
Short answer
Shopify Subscriptions and native business-to-business features save over $2,600 a month against Recharge and a wholesale app at listed prices, at $2M of yearly subscription sales (Deploi arithmetic). Recharge, a subscription app, takes 1.34% to 1.49% plus 19¢ per order, so its fee drives the saving (Recharge pricing, October 2026). Both native features are free (Shopify App Store, Shopify Changelog, October 2026).

Deploi’s call
The subscription-app and business-to-business (B2B) app line items really do go to zero, but each swap buys you a theme-layer rebuild. The honest framing is "monthly saving minus a one-off build", not free money. Anyone quoting you a pure saving has not looked at your theme.
CustomizeSwap to native, and budget the theme work, when
- Your subscriptions are fixed-cadence replenishment: Shopify Subscriptions renews weekly, monthly or yearly, with skip, pause and cancel, for free (Shopify App Store, October 2026).
- Your wholesale fits 3 active catalogs, net terms and volume pricing, all free on Basic, Grow and Advanced (Shopify Changelog, October 2026), so a wholesale app duplicates what you already have.
- The Recharge subscription app's percentage fee outruns the theme work: on $2M of subscription sales it is $26,800 to $29,800 a year (Deploi arithmetic from Recharge pricing, October 2026).
BuyKeep the paid app when
- Gifting, prepaid or cancellation-save flows drive retention: Recharge's $99 Starter plan includes all three (Recharge pricing, October 2026).
- A buyer group needs a fourth catalog, a deposit or a partial payment, which native B2B keeps on Plus (Shopify Changelog, October 2026).
- Your Recharge Plus or Custom plan is mid-term: those plans “run on 12-month terms” (Recharge pricing, October 2026), so keep the app until the renewal.

Which paid apps does native Shopify replace for free?
Native Shopify replaces two paid apps for free: a subscription app, with the Shopify Subscriptions app, and a wholesale app, with native business-to-business (B2B) features. A page builder and a cart widget can go too, but only after theme work, so they are a build, not a free feature.
| App line | What the app costs (USD) | Native replacement | Monthly fee after |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subscriptions | Recharge Starter $99 a month plus 1.49% + 19¢ per transaction; Plus $499 plus 1.34% + 19¢ | Shopify Subscriptions: free; weekly, monthly or yearly renewals; skip, pause, cancel | $0 |
| B2B and wholesale | Listed paid plans $29 to $399 a month; larger plans quoted | Native B2B below Plus: 3 active catalogs, company profiles, payment terms, volume pricing | $0 |
| Page builder and cart widget | App plans | Theme sections and a cart drawer, built once | $0 after the build |
Only the B2B half is new. Shopify opened native B2B to Basic, Grow and Advanced on 2 April 2026 “at no additional cost” (Shopify Changelog, October 2026). Shopify Subscriptions is free and has been on the App Store since 31 January 2024 (Shopify App Store, October 2026).
How much does swapping paid apps for native Shopify save each month?
Swapping the Recharge subscription app and a wholesale app for native Shopify saves $2,611 to $3,131 a month on $2M a year of subscription sales at Recharge's published rates, before its 19¢ per order (Deploi arithmetic). Most of it is Recharge's percentage fee, which applies to “all transactions processed by Recharge per month” (Recharge pricing, October 2026), so it grows with every subscriber you add.
| Subscription sales a year (USD) | Starter at 1.49%, a year | Plus at 1.34%, a year | A month, Plus to Starter |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1M | $14,900 | $13,400 | $1,117 to $1,242 |
| $2M | $29,800 | $26,800 | $2,233 to $2,483 |
| $5M | $74,500 | $67,000 | $5,583 to $6,208 |
The plan fees are the small half: $99 or $499 a month for Recharge. Listed paid plans for business-to-business (B2B) apps run $29 to $399 a month, from BSS B2B Wholesale Pricing to PortalSphere (Shopify App Store, October 2026). Deploi's app-stack record scores consolidation CUSTOMIZE: replace widget-class apps with native features and theme sections (Deploi decision record, October 2026). Divide your scoped theme-work quote by $2,611 to $3,131 a month to see how many months the swap takes to repay it (Deploi arithmetic).
What shrinks the saving from replacing apps with native Shopify features?
Four things shrink the saving from replacing apps with native Shopify features: the business-to-business (B2B) catalog cap, lost retention features, theme work and data moves.
- The catalog cap. On Basic, Grow and Advanced you can assign “up to 3 active catalogs across all your B2B markets” (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), and deposits and partial payments stay on Plus. So count your price lists against the 3-catalog cap before you cancel a wholesale app. If wholesale is what keeps you on Plus, whether dropping to Advanced pays is the next question.
- Retention depth. Recharge's $99 Starter plan includes gift subscriptions, prepaid subscriptions and Smart Cancellation Prevention (Recharge pricing, October 2026). The native app lists renewals, discounts, skip, pause and cancel, so check what Shopify Subscriptions does not cover before you switch.
- The theme work. In our judgment the native app's default purchase options need design work to match a paid app's widget, and dropping a cart or page-builder app leaves your team owning the drawer and sections. So book the saving once that work is scoped, because the product page is where a subscriber decides.
- The data move. Wholesale accounts and price lists need a home before you uninstall, which our B2B record counts as real switching work (Deploi decision record, October 2026), and subscriber contracts and loyalty balances need one too.
How do you find what your apps cost today?
You find what your apps cost today by adding up three kinds of bill, because Settings > Billing alone undercounts it. The three are the regular Shopify bill, separate invoices for one-time app charges, and charges some apps bill outside Shopify (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Recharge is one of those apps, so its fee may never reach your Shopify bill: its listing says charges “may be billed by Recharge separately from your Shopify invoice” (Recharge on the Shopify App Store, October 2026).
Count all three before you book a saving from native features. How to count what unused apps cost you sets out that reconciliation step by step, and it explains why no industry benchmark can stand in for it.
When is swapping a paid app for native Shopify the wrong move?
Swapping a paid app for a native Shopify feature is the wrong move when the app does work the native feature cannot, or when its contract makes the timing wrong.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- Shopify's rollout messaging treats native parity as a switch you flip. We scored app stack consolidation a CUSTOMIZE, not a BUY-nothing, precisely because the flip is a build. And we still scored Recharge a BUY where retention depth is genuinely the job: free is not cheaper than a subscriber you kept.
- Our judgment on the product page
- Scope the product-page purchase options before you count the Recharge saving. We treat the native app's selector as a starting point rather than a finished design.
Decision records behind this answer
When this answer changes
- Recharge changes its Starter or Plus pricing, today $99 and $499 a month plus 1.49% and 1.34% + 19¢ per transaction.
- Shopify changes the 3-catalog cap below Plus, or moves deposits or partial payments down from Plus.
- Shopify Subscriptions adds gifting, prepaid or cancellation-save flows, or starts charging.
- Your subscription sales approach 30% of revenue, where a custom portal starts to beat both the app and the native app.
- A Recharge Plus or Custom term comes up for renewal.
Follow-up questions
What's inside the number
- How much does the typical mid-market Shopify store actually overspend per month on apps that are installed but genuinely unused?
Installed-but-unused Shopify app spend has no credible published benchmark, because the figures in circulation estimate total app spend from listed prices, not bills.
- Is switching from a third-party translation app to Shopify's own native Translate & Adapt a genuine cost-optimization move, or does it just shift the cost elsewhere?
Switching to Shopify Translate & Adapt saves the whole subscription only within its automatic-language limit; past it, the cost moves into translation labor.
How it compares
- Is consolidating multiple point-solution apps (email, SMS, reviews, loyalty separately) into fewer platforms with bundled pricing a genuine cost-optimization lever for a mid-market store?
Consolidating point-solution apps is an operations lever at mid-market, not a cost lever, because each channel stays metered.
What to do next
- Is right-sizing down from Plus to Advanced a genuine cost-optimization move for a modest-wholesale merchant now that core B2B is free everywhere, or does it usually backfire?
Dropping Shopify Plus for Advanced saves a modest-wholesale merchant $1,901 to $2,201 a month in plan fees, and core business-to-business (B2B) features stay (Shopify Changelog, October 2026).
Related questions
- What subscription features does Shopify's native Subscriptions app NOT cover that force an upgrade to Recharge or Skio?
Shopify Subscriptions forces an upgrade only for bundles, which "aren't compatible" with it (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), and for retention tools such as cancellation saves (Shopify Help Center) and prepaid or gift subscriptions (Shopify Help Center).
- For a brand at $20M GMV where B2B/wholesale is 10%-30% of revenue, is Advanced's 3-catalog limit already a real constraint?
Shopify Advanced's 3-catalog limit binds a $20M brand with 10% to 30% wholesale at its fourth catalog.
