For a brand at $20M GMV where B2B/wholesale is 10%-30% of revenue, is Advanced's 3-catalog limit already a real constraint?
Short answer
Shopify Advanced's 3-catalog limit binds a $20M brand with 10% to 30% wholesale at its fourth catalog. Count each price tier once per currency you price by hand, plus one per account with its own prices. Shopify Plus lifts the cap (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026). Converted currencies add nothing, because percentage-off prices convert at exchange rates (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

Deploi’s call
At $20M with 10% to 30% wholesale, Shopify's three-catalog cap below Plus is usually already binding. The reason is multiplication rather than tier count: each price tier counts once per currency you set prices in by hand, and each key account with prices of its own adds one. Volume breaks, customers and converted prices cost nothing, which is why one price list in one currency still fits. We score a pricing app BUY while the cap is your only Plus-only need, and Shopify Plus once deposits, partial payments or direct company catalogs join it (Deploi verdict, September 2026).
BuyPrice an app or Plus now when
- Tiers counted once per hand-priced currency already pass three.
- A key account has negotiated its own prices, which below Plus spends a whole catalog on one customer.
- A new hand-priced currency or market is on this year's plan.
WaitStay inside three catalogs while
- You run one wholesale price list in one currency and handle volume with quantity price breaks.
- Buyers abroad accept prices converted from your home-currency tiers, which needs Shopify Payments (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- All wholesale goes through one distributor on one price. Revisit when a second asks for different terms.

What counts against the 3-catalog limit, and what doesn't?
Three things count against the limit below Shopify Plus: each price tier, each currency you set prices in by hand, and each account with prices of its own. Volume breaks, customers and converted prices count for nothing.
- Volume breaks don't count. Quantity price breaks are on every plan (Shopify Help Center, October 2026) and sit inside a catalog, up to 10 per product (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A gold tier with breaks at 10, 50 and 100 units is one catalog, not four.
- Customers don't count. Catalogs attach to markets, and one market can take in every company location you sell to (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so 200 wholesale accounts on one tier are one catalog.
- Hand-set currencies do count. A catalog's fixed prices sit in one currency (Shopify developer docs, October 2026), while percentage adjustments convert at exchange rates (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A gold tier with a hand-set Canadian dollar price sheet is a second catalog. A gold tier at 30% off, converted for Canadian buyers, is not.
Converted prices need Shopify Payments (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). They also skip your rounding rules, because Shopify Markets rounding rules don't apply to business-to-business (B2B) buyers (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Catalog currency doesn't set the currency buyers see either (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
How many catalogs does your wholesale profile actually use?
Your profile uses one catalog per price tier per hand-priced currency, plus one per account with its own prices.
| Wholesale profile | Price tiers | Hand-priced currencies | Catalogs used | Against the cap of 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Three tiers, US only | 3 | 1 | 3 | At the cap |
| Three tiers, Canadian prices converted | 3 | 1 | 3 | At the cap; prices float |
| Three tiers, hand-set US and Canadian prices | 3 | 2 | 6 | Double the cap |
| Two tiers plus one key account's own prices | 2 tiers and 1 account | 1 | 3 | At the cap |
Our judgment: at $20M with 10% to 30% wholesale, a few key accounts usually negotiate their own prices. Below Shopify Plus you can't assign a catalog to a company (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). You build a business-to-business (B2B) market from that company's locations instead (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so one customer takes a third of your catalog allowance. A US and Canada brand that hand-sets Canadian prices hits the cap on currency, and two new hand-priced markets multiply it again.
What does each plan step above Grow add for wholesale?
The Advanced plan adds contextual checkout and storefront and more staff accounts; only Shopify Plus adds catalogs. Moving from Grow at $105 to Advanced at $399 a month, billed monthly, buys none, because Basic, Grow and Advanced have the same 3-catalog cap (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026). Contextual checkout and storefront let you show wholesale buyers different checkout and storefront content through Shopify Markets (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Staff accounts rise from Grow's 5 to 15 (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026), a softer limit than catalogs.
| Business-to-business (B2B) capability | Basic, Grow and Advanced | Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Catalogs | 3, assigned to B2B markets | Unlimited; 25 per company location, 10,000 per store |
| Direct company catalogs | No | Yes |
| Deposit requirements, companies and draft orders | No | Yes |
| Partial payments | No | Yes |
| Payment requests per fulfillment | No | Yes |
| Contextual checkout and storefront | Advanced only | Yes |
| Net terms, quantity price breaks, purchase order numbers, easy reorders | Yes | Yes |
The payment rows decide a high-value furniture trade program before catalog count does. The per-location ceiling is why our record on 30-plus price tiers splits large buying groups across company locations, even on Plus.
What does a dedicated B2B store do to the Advanced versus Plus gap?
A dedicated business-to-business (B2B) store narrows the plan-fee gap between Shopify Advanced and Shopify Plus by that store's own plan fee, $39 to $399 a month. Shopify says it takes a net-new store or an adapted expansion store, with integrations reconfigured and settings managed separately (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Plus includes your main store and 9 expansion stores in its platform fee (shopify.com/plus/pricing, October 2026). Below Plus there are no free expansion stores. Shopify's store-type guide names no plan for the separate store, so it pays its own fee: $39 on Basic up to $399 on Advanced, billed monthly (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026).
What Plus, at $2,300 on a 3-year term to $2,500 on a 1-year term, costs above Advanced each month (Deploi arithmetic from the figures above):
- One Advanced store: $1,901 to $2,101.
- Advanced plus a dedicated store on Basic: $1,862 to $2,062.
- Advanced plus a dedicated store on Advanced: $1,502 to $1,702, or 9 to 10 basis points of $20M a year.
Those are starting prices. Shopify moves more complex, higher volume businesses to a variable platform fee (shopify.com/plus/pricing, October 2026), so run the full Advanced against Plus arithmetic on your quote. The store type is "not easy to change at a later time" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so settle when a dedicated store pays off before the plan.
What rules out Shopify B2B before the catalog count matters?
Subscriptions and a 500-line-item order cap rule out some wholesale models on every plan, before catalogs come into it. Shopify lists subscriptions among the features incompatible with business-to-business (B2B) selling, with accelerated checkouts such as Shop Pay and local delivery (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Orders and draft orders each cap at 500 line items (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Subscriptions rule out a replenishment model built on recurring billing, so standing wholesale orders need another route.
- The 500-line-item cap rules out a distributor that places full-catalog seasonal orders in one order.
Check both before you price a plan, because no plan change fixes either.
When is upgrading for catalogs the wrong move?
Upgrading for catalogs is the wrong move whenever the count hasn't been done on Shopify's terms, or the blocker is one no plan fixes.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- The category answers this with a GMV threshold and treats B2B share as a footnote. GMV is the wrong axis here. Two brands at $20M with identical wholesale share have opposite correct answers depending on how many currencies they set wholesale prices in by hand and whether their largest accounts negotiate. We would rather give you the multiplication than a revenue number you will misapply.
- How we scope it
- We recount on Shopify's terms before anything else: price tiers times the currencies priced by hand, plus each account with its own prices, leaving out volume breaks, customers and converted prices. It is the first thing we do in a wholesale scoping call, and it moves the answer in both directions.
- What this page adds to our own decision records
- Our catalog records answer how to get past three. This page answers the prior question, whether you are actually at three, and prices the dedicated wholesale store: it narrows the published plan-fee gap between Advanced and Plus, $1,901 to $2,101 a month billed monthly, by that store's own plan fee of $39 to $399 (Deploi arithmetic from Shopify's published prices, October 2026).
Decision records behind this answer
When this answer changes
- Shopify raises the 3-catalog allowance on Basic, Grow or Advanced, or opens direct company catalogs below Plus.
- Shopify changes how B2B catalog currencies work, such as converting fixed prices or applying Markets rounding rules to B2B buyers.
- Shopify changes the Grow, Advanced or Plus price, or the 9 expansion stores Plus includes.
- Shopify raises the 25-catalog ceiling per company location or the 10,000-catalog store maximum.
- Shopify makes subscriptions compatible with B2B or lifts the 500-line-item order limit.
- You add a currency with hand-set wholesale prices, or a key account negotiates its own price list.
Follow-up questions
How it compares
- From an operations manager's perspective, does the tier decision hinge more on staff-account limits or on B2B catalog capacity?
Business-to-business (B2B) catalog capacity decides the tier, not staff-account limits, because seats have a free exit.
If you're not the typical case
- For a brand at $40M GMV with 20% B2B share and active international expansion into 2 new markets this year, do all three factors point the same direction, or do they conflict?
All three factors point toward Shopify Plus; none argues for Advanced.
- Worked example: a $28M GMV furniture brand, 35% B2B to interior designers, US-only, no in-house dev, high AOV/low order volume. Advanced or Plus?
Shopify Plus wins this profile on payment structure, not catalogs, once furniture trade orders take a deposit and ship in parts.
- Worked example: a $35M GMV DTC apparel brand, 15% wholesale, selling in US+Canada, with a 2-person dev team. Advanced or Plus?
Shopify Plus wins this profile only if Canadian wholesale prices are hand-set.
Related questions
- At $1M+/month in online sales, is staying on Advanced actually leaving money on the table by not upgrading to Plus?
Shopify Advanced at $1M a month leaves money on the table with a third-party processor or a funded Plus-only capability.
- What's the actual breakeven point where a dedicated B2B expansion store starts making more sense than a blended single store?
A dedicated business-to-business (B2B) expansion store has no revenue breakeven, because Shopify Plus charges no platform fee for one B2B store per contract (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- What currencies can net payment terms actually be issued in? Does this work the same for international B2B buyers?
Net payment terms on Shopify carry no currency: a term is a type and a day count, so it runs in whatever currency the order is in (Shopify developer docs, October 2026).
