What's the actual breakeven point where a dedicated B2B expansion store starts making more sense than a blended single store?
Short answer
A dedicated business-to-business (B2B) expansion store has no revenue breakeven, because Shopify Plus charges no platform fee for one B2B store per contract (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Below Plus, a second store pays a plan fee of $39 to $399 a month, billed monthly (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026). Dedicated makes sense once wholesale needs its own experience, inventory or team.

Deploi’s call
The breakeven is not a wholesale revenue number. It is the point where business-to-business (B2B) selling needs its own catalog depth, content and merchandising, because until then a second store duplicates operations for no gain. We scored the blended storefront CUSTOMIZE and expansion-store costs BUY for exactly that reason (Deploi verdicts, August and September 2026).
CustomizeStay blended while
- Wholesale buyers order mostly what retail customers buy, from the same inventory.
- One team runs both channels, so a single admin helps rather than constrains.
- No more than one of Shopify's four dedicated-store conditions is true: a separate B2B experience, distinct inventory, a gated store or different staff (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- The only wall is the 3-catalog cap below Plus (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026), which an app, Plus or a second store can clear.
BuildGo dedicated when
- Three or four of Shopify's dedicated-store conditions are true, such as a gated store or separate teams (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Among those conditions, wholesale needs its own assortment, brand or team, the forks our blended storefront record scores BUILD (August 2026).
- Someone owns the second admin, its apps and its theme from launch.

Why is there no wholesale revenue threshold for a dedicated B2B store?
No wholesale revenue threshold exists for a dedicated business-to-business (B2B) store on Shopify Plus, because the store adds nothing on the axis a revenue threshold measures. Shopify lists B2B wholesale stores among the expansion store types that are "automatically eligible", with a "Limit of one free B2B store per contract" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Shopify's Plus pricing page says "Your main store and 9 expansion stores are included as part of your monthly platform fee" (shopify.com/plus/pricing, October 2026).
So on Plus the platform fee for going dedicated is $0, and a breakeven on a $0 line has no crossing point. The real costs sit in apps, themes and a second operation, which is why a free slot alone is no reason for a Plus brand to split. Below Plus there are no free expansion stores, so a second store pays its own plan fee (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026).
Where do the costs of a dedicated B2B store actually sit?
The costs of a dedicated business-to-business (B2B) store sit in everything Shopify runs per store: apps, theme licenses, product data and the team behind a second admin.
| Cost line | Blended single store | Dedicated B2B store |
|---|---|---|
| Platform fee | Included in the store's plan | $0 for one B2B store on Plus; $39 to $399 a month on its own plan below Plus, billed monthly |
| Apps and integrations | Set up and paid for once | Set up and paid for again |
| Theme license | One license | A second license, because a license can't be shared across stores |
| Products, collections and inventory | One set for both channels | A separate set that doesn't sync between stores by default |
| Operations | One admin and one set of releases | Two admins, two sets of releases and twice the testing (Deploi judgment) |
So the breakeven is denominated in duplicated operations, not revenue: the only thing that pays for running two of something is genuinely needing two of them. Our multi-store record calls store count the biggest operations multiplier on Shopify, because every promo, release, app update and report repeats per store (August 2026).
What does Shopify's own test say about blended versus dedicated?
Shopify's own test favors a dedicated business-to-business (B2B) store when wholesale needs its own experience, inventory, gated access or staff, and a blended store when both channels share them. Its store-type guide lists three conditions for blended selling to B2B and direct-to-consumer (D2C) customers, and four for dedicated (Shopify Help Center, October 2026):
- Blended: "Sell similar products to both B2B and D2C customers." "Share inventory between your B2B and D2C operations." "Have the same staff managing both B2B and D2C sales."
- Dedicated: "Want a separate B2B experience." "Need distinct inventory for B2B and D2C operations." "Want to restrict online store access to B2B customers only (gated store)." "Have different staff managing your B2B and D2C operations."
Count the dedicated conditions that are true of your business. Zero or one, stay blended and spend the money on merchandising. Three or four, the second store is the correct architecture. Two is where the judgment lives. Our tiebreaker is reversibility, because Shopify says the store type is "not easy to change at a later time" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A blended store can split later; two stores that merge must merge order history, customer records and two app setups. A group with several brands runs this test once per brand.
When does a second store buy B2B capacity below Plus?
A second store buys business-to-business (B2B) catalog capacity below Shopify Plus only when wholesale buyers divide cleanly between the two stores. Each store on Basic, Grow or Advanced has its own allowance of "Up to 3 catalogs" (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026). The 3-catalog counting rule counts each price tier once per currency you price by hand, plus each account with its own prices.
| Path | Added cost a month (USD) | Catalogs after | Catalogs assigned to a company |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep Advanced, move part of wholesale to a second store | $39 to $399 | 3 in each store, across two admins | No |
| Upgrade the Advanced store to Plus | $1,901 to $2,101 | Unlimited, in one admin | Yes |
Below Plus, a key account with its own prices still takes a whole catalog. A catalog reaches one company only through a B2B market built from its locations (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), while Plus assigns catalogs to companies directly (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So the second store fixes tier and currency math cheaply, and only postpones the key-account problem.
What does a dedicated B2B store give up on agentic storefronts?
A dedicated business-to-business (B2B) store gives up agentic storefronts, Shopify's sales channels inside AI assistants such as ChatGPT, for everything behind its login. That is because "Shopify's agentic storefronts support only direct-to-consumer (D2C) sales" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Shopify also lists agentic storefronts among the features that aren't compatible with B2B (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
Shopify excludes products sold only to business buyers when it can identify them. Its three signals are publication only to B2B markets or company catalogs, a customer login and a store password. A blended store keeps its D2C assortment on agentic storefronts at the D2C price, and "B2B pricing doesn't display on agentic storefronts" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So the exclusion works product by product in a blended store, and covers a gated dedicated store whole. That holds when wholesale runs on native B2B: Shopify can miss products that an app or theme code hides.
For most brands this is the right outcome, since you were not trying to sell wholesale through ChatGPT. It costs something in one case: a dedicated store that was going to carry a publicly browsable assortment. That assortment leaves Shopify Catalog, which feeds product data to those AI channels, when it moves behind the login, so put the line in the migration plan.
When should you not go dedicated?
You should not go dedicated when a cheaper fix inside one store solves the actual complaint.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- The category answers this with a wholesale-revenue number, usually somewhere around 20 to 30% of total revenue, because a percentage is easy to publish. That number was written when a dedicated store was also how you got B2B at all. B2B core is now on Basic, and the second store buys you separation, not capability. The percentage is a fossil of a plan gate that moved.
- How we scope it
- Count Shopify's four dedicated-store conditions, then count the app subscriptions that would have to be bought twice, then ask who owns the second admin on a Tuesday. Three questions, no revenue model. We run them in that order because the app count is the number that changes people's minds and the ownership question is the one that predicts whether the second store gets maintained.
- What we refuse to quote
- A gross merchandise value (GMV) or wholesale-percentage threshold for going dedicated. The platform cost of the first B2B expansion store on Plus is zero, so any threshold denominated in revenue is measuring the wrong axis, and the real costs are per-store app and theme licenses whose totals are specific to your stack.
- What this page adds to our decision records
- Our blended storefront record names the forks that justify a split: assortment, brand and team ownership. Our expansion-store licensing record prices the per-store app and theme bill once several stores exist. This page sits between them: it argues the store count is an operations decision rather than a revenue one, and prices the second store on every plan.
Decision records behind this answer
When this answer changes
- Shopify changes the limit of one free B2B store per Plus contract, or the 9 expansion stores Plus includes.
- Shopify starts billing apps per organization instead of per store, which removes the largest recurring cost of a second store.
- Shopify raises the 3-catalog allowance below Plus, or opens direct company catalogs on Advanced.
- Shopify's store-type guide changes its blended or dedicated conditions.
- Agentic storefronts start supporting B2B sales, which changes what a gated store gives up.
- Shopify moves theme customization by customer type below Plus, or market-based theme customization above Advanced.
Follow-up questions
If you're not the typical case
- Do multi-brand companies need a separate blended-vs-dedicated decision for each brand, or can one architecture serve all brands?
Multi-brand companies decide once per brand whether wholesale shares a store with retail (blended) or gets its own business-to-business (B2B) store (dedicated), because Shopify Plus allows "one brand per contract" (shopify.com/plus/pricing, October 2026).
- If we're already selling DTC on Plus with 9 expansion stores available, should one of those become a dedicated B2B store?
A Shopify Plus expansion store earns a dedicated business-to-business (B2B) build only when wholesale needs its own experience, inventory, gated access or staff.
Related questions
- For a brand at $20M GMV where B2B/wholesale is 10%-30% of revenue, is Advanced's 3-catalog limit already a real constraint?
Shopify Advanced's 3-catalog limit binds a $20M brand with 10% to 30% wholesale at its fourth catalog.
- If our company runs 3 separate brands, do we need 3 separate Shopify Plus contracts at $2,300/month each, or can one contract cover all 3?
Shopify Plus covers one brand per contract, so three separate brands pay three Plus fees, from $6,900 a month on 3-year terms (Deploi arithmetic from shopify.com/plus/pricing, October 2026).
- How exactly do net payment terms (Net 30/60/90) work for B2B customers on Shopify, from invoice to payment?
Shopify's business-to-business (B2B) net terms set a due date of net 7, 15, 30, 45, 60 or 90 days on the order (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
