If we're already selling DTC on Plus with 9 expansion stores available, should one of those become a dedicated B2B store?
Short answer
A Shopify Plus expansion store earns a dedicated business-to-business (B2B) build only when wholesale needs its own experience, inventory, gated access or staff. Shopify pre-approves one free B2B wholesale store per contract, for the main brand's identical products behind a login (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). The slot is free; the apps, theme license and second operation are not, so the conditions decide, not the slot.

Deploi’s call
Use the free expansion store slot when two or more of Shopify's four dedicated-store conditions are true, and not because the slot is sitting there. The free entitlement removes the plan fee from the decision and changes nothing about the recurring cost, which is per-store apps, a second theme license and a second operation.
WaitKeep wholesale in the main store while
- You haven't run a full wholesale season on Shopify's native business-to-business (B2B) tools in the store you have.
- Wholesale allocation is a reservation against shared stock.
- One team runs retail and wholesale.
BuildUse the free wholesale slot when
- Two or more of Shopify's four dedicated-store conditions still hold after a season (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). They are a separate experience, distinct inventory, a gated store and different staff.
- Wholesale sells the main brand's identical products, so the pre-approval fits (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Different staff is often one of them: our blended storefront record scores split ownership BUILD on its own, because one codebase breeds release collisions (August 2026).
- Someone owns the second admin from launch.

Is a free expansion store slot a reason to build a dedicated B2B store?
A free Shopify Plus expansion store slot is not a reason on its own to build a dedicated business-to-business (B2B) store, because the slot covers only the platform fee. Shopify's pre-approved store types include "B2B wholesale stores: Identical products as the main brand, requires user login and B2B organization association" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). The same entry sets a "Limit of one free B2B store per contract". So the entitlement exists, it is meant for exactly this, and nobody has to negotiate it.
The trap is treating an unused entitlement as a reason to use it. The apps, the theme license and the second operation recur every month, and the cost lines of a dedicated B2B store show where that money goes.
What does Shopify's pre-approval for a B2B store require?
Shopify's pre-approval for a free business-to-business (B2B) expansion store requires two things: the main brand's identical products, and a login tied to a B2B organization (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Two clauses catch people.
"Identical products as the main brand." The pre-approval describes a wholesale storefront selling the retail brand's own assortment. A wholesale operation with its own products, its own packs or a private-label line is not obviously inside that description. Confirm with Shopify before you build rather than after, because every expansion store must also "Carry the same types of goods and services as the main brand" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
"Requires user login and B2B organization association." The store is meant to be gated, which is usually what you wanted. The gate also keeps wholesale-only products off Shopify's agentic storefronts, its sales channels inside AI assistants such as ChatGPT. When an app or theme code hides wholesale prices, Shopify may miss those products, and one fix it lists for Plus is a separate expansion store for B2B. Its first fix, native B2B catalogs and companies, needs no second store (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
What does a Plus organization share across stores, and what repeats?
A Shopify Plus organization shares users and billing across its stores, while apps, theme licenses and store data repeat in each one (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
Run your own app list against the apps row first. Each app on a mid-market stack, such as reviews, search, an ERP connector, a helpdesk, loyalty and tax, becomes a second subscription and a second configuration to keep in step. Our expansion-store licensing record still scores absorbing that bill BUY, because a shared headless front end never pays for itself on license savings (September 2026).
How do Shopify's dedicated-store conditions read for a brand already on Plus?
For a brand already on Shopify Plus, two of Shopify's four dedicated-store conditions do most of the work: distinct inventory and different staff (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Both compare business-to-business (B2B) selling with direct-to-consumer (D2C) selling. Distinct inventory is often a trap, and different staff most reliably justifies the build.
Distinct inventory. Shopify's condition, "Need distinct inventory for B2B and D2C operations", is a genuine need for some wholesalers and a trap for others, because stores don't share inventory by default (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A brand whose wholesale allocation is a reservation against shared stock wants blended selling with allocation logic, not two inventory pools reconciled by an integration somebody has to own.
Different staff. "Have different staff managing your B2B and D2C operations" most reliably justifies the build for a Plus brand, because separate teams are what a second admin genuinely serves. Permissions, notifications and reporting all stop colliding at once.
In what order should a Plus brand move B2B into its own store?
A Plus brand should move business-to-business (B2B) selling into its own store last, after a season of running it in the store it already has.
- Set up B2B in the existing store first, even if you are sure you will split. Companies, locations, catalogs and payment terms all work there today, and building there tests your requirements against live orders rather than a whiteboard.
- Run one full wholesale season blended. The requirements you write after one season differ from the ones you write before, and the difference is the part that would have been built wrong.
- Then split, if two or more of Shopify's four dedicated-store conditions still hold. Shopify copies themes, products, collections and files into a new store only when the store is created (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Companies, catalogs and terms aren't on that list, so the season's setup becomes the second store's specification.
- Never split in the same quarter as a replatform or an enterprise resource planning (ERP) change. When a number goes wrong afterwards, nobody can say which project caused it.
When should a Plus brand not use the free B2B slot?
A Plus brand should not use the free business-to-business (B2B) slot when a market needs it, the goal is only a new look, or nobody will own the store.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- Plus merchants are routinely advised to "use your expansion stores, you're paying for them anyway." That is sunk-cost reasoning applied to a line item that is not actually the cost. The cost is two of everything else, forever, and it does not appear on the Shopify invoice.
- What we tell clients to do first
- Build B2B in the existing store and run one wholesale season on it. Nearly every requirement anyone writes before that season is wrong in at least one expensive way, and the blended build is not wasted work, because the companies, catalogs and terms you set up become the specification for the second store.
- What this page adds
- The parent prices a dedicated store on every plan. This page reads Shopify's pre-approval for a brand already on Plus: the free B2B store needs the main brand's identical products behind a login, it takes one of the nine slots that market stores also need, a new store copies only themes, products, collections and files at creation, and Shopify names a B2B expansion store as one fix when apps hide wholesale products from agentic storefronts.
Decision records behind this answer
When this answer changes
- Shopify changes the limit of one free B2B store per Plus contract, or its identical-products condition.
- Shopify changes the 9 expansion stores Plus includes, or the $300 a month price of stores past ten.
- Shopify adds companies, catalogs or payment terms to the data a new expansion store can import.
- Shopify starts billing apps or theme licenses per organization instead of per store.
- Shopify's agentic storefronts start supporting B2B sales.

This follows from What's the actual breakeven point where a dedicated B2B expansion store starts making more sense than a blended single store?
- Do multi-brand companies need a separate blended-vs-dedicated decision for each brand, or can one architecture serve all brands?
Multi-brand companies decide once per brand whether wholesale shares a store with retail (blended) or gets its own business-to-business (B2B) store (dedicated), because Shopify Plus allows "one brand per contract" (shopify.com/plus/pricing, October 2026).
- Does a Shopify Plus contract's '9 expansion stores' allowance count toward the same variable-platform-fee revenue calculation as the main store, or are expansion stores priced independently of GMV?
Shopify Plus prices the contract, not each expansion store, because “Your main store and 9 expansion stores are included as part of your monthly platform fee.” Stores beyond ten cost “$300 USD per month per store, or a revenue share across all stores” (shopify.com/plus/pricing, October 2026).
