Fees & Rates

Does a Shopify Plus contract's '9 expansion stores' allowance count toward the same variable-platform-fee revenue calculation as the main store, or are expansion stores priced independently of GMV?

Short answer

Shopify Plus prices the contract, not each expansion store, because “Your main store and 9 expansion stores are included as part of your monthly platform fee.” Stores beyond ten cost “$300 USD per month per store, or a revenue share across all stores” (shopify.com/plus/pricing, October 2026). Shopify's Plus pages publish no variable-fee rate, threshold or revenue base.

Deploi’s call

Shopify Plus prices the contract, not the store: up to ten stores share one platform fee, and Shopify publishes no per-store revenue calculation. Stop modelling expansion stores as a per-store platform cost and model the app stack instead, because apps bill again on every store.

BuyAdd an expansion store on your current Plus fee when

  • The new store is store ten or fewer, because “Your main store and 9 expansion stores are included as part of your monthly platform fee” (shopify.com/plus/pricing, October 2026).
  • The new store extends the main brand and is billed in USD or INR, as Shopify's expansion store rules require (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • No app on the new store's stack passes roughly $1,000 a month across the portfolio, the point where Deploi's per-store app billing record says a custom app starts to pay back (October 2026).

WaitGet the fee terms in writing first when

  • The new store would be your eleventh: Shopify charges “$300 USD per month per store, or a revenue share across all stores” (shopify.com/plus/pricing, October 2026).
  • Your contract already runs on the variable platform fee, so the new store's revenue may join a base Shopify does not publish.
  • The new store sells business-to-business (B2B) beside direct-to-consumer (D2C) stores, because the variable fee “is different for B2B and Direct to Customer (D2C) orders” (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

Does adding an expansion store raise the Shopify Plus platform fee?

No: on Shopify's published flat fee, a Shopify Plus expansion store adds nothing until the contract passes ten stores. Shopify defines expansion stores as “additional .myshopify.com stores that fall under the same organization and contract on your Shopify Plus plan” (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A contract holds “a maximum of ten stores” at no additional cost: one main store and nine expansion stores. Staging stores don't count towards that limit.

So a merchant with eight expansion stores pays what a merchant with none pays: $2,300 USD a month on a 3-year term, or $2,500 on a 1-year term (shopify.com/plus/pricing, October 2026). Each store must still qualify as an expansion store, which is why three separate brands cannot fill one contract's ten stores.

Does expansion-store revenue count toward the variable platform fee?

Shopify does not publish whether expansion-store revenue counts toward the Shopify Plus variable platform fee, but its wording points to one revenue base across the contract. Shopify's Plus pricing page says “More complex, higher volume businesses switch to a variable platform fee based on their revenue and business model” (shopify.com/plus/pricing, October 2026). The same page prices stores beyond ten at “$300 USD per month per store, or a revenue share across all stores.” Shopify's Help Center is less definite: for more complex, higher-volume businesses “there might be a variable platform fee” (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

“Across all stores” describes a base that spans the contract, not one storefront. That is our reading, because Shopify does not publish the calculation. The Help Center adds that the fee differs for business-to-business (B2B) and direct-to-consumer (D2C) sales: it “is different for B2B and Direct to Customer (D2C) orders” (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So a portfolio that mixes B2B and D2C stores should expect a quote to price the two revenue streams differently, which makes the variable fee a term to negotiate, not a rate to look up.

What does Shopify not publish about expansion-store pricing?

Shopify publishes the ten-store allowance and the price of each store beyond ten, but no rate, threshold, cap or revenue base for the variable platform fee. Shopify does say the fee differs for business-to-business (B2B) and direct-to-consumer (D2C) orders (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So budget on the published rows and take the rest to Shopify.

Which terms should you get in writing before you add a store?

Get five terms in writing before you add a Shopify Plus expansion store, because Shopify publishes the flat fee but none of the variable fee's terms.

  1. The threshold: the revenue at which your contract moves from the flat fee to the variable fee.
  2. The rate: the variable fee's percentage.
  3. The revenue base: which stores' gross merchandise volume (GMV) counts, and how business-to-business (B2B) and direct-to-consumer (D2C) sales are split.
  4. The cap: whether the variable fee has a ceiling.
  5. The mid-term rule: what a store added mid-term does to the fee, including an eleventh store at “$300 USD per month per store, or a revenue share across all stores” (shopify.com/plus/pricing, October 2026).

Bring your trailing twelve months of GMV across every store you plan to put on the contract, so the answers fit your numbers. Then put them in the contract, not in an email from a sales rep.

Which costs rise with each expansion store?

Apps and theme licences rise with each Shopify Plus expansion store, because Shopify bills them per store while the flat platform fee covers the first ten stores. Apps are “billed on a per-store basis rather than for the entire organization,” and “Theme licenses are required for each individual store” (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So ten stores on one contract means one platform fee and ten app stacks.

Deploi's per-store app billing record scores the app question DEPENDS for a five-store portfolio (October 2026). Its illustrative estimate puts the crossover at roughly $1,000 a month across the portfolio. Below that, buying the app once per store stays cheaper. Above it, one custom app installed on every store starts to pay back, with upkeep of roughly 15 to 20% of its build cost a year. Store six moves the app bill; the flat platform fee does not move until store eleven.

When is adding an expansion store the wrong move?

Adding a Shopify Plus expansion store is the wrong move when the store fails Shopify's rules, when one store can do the job, or when its costs are not yet priced.

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

Where we disagree
Plus cost content routinely publishes a variable-platform-fee percentage as though it were a rate card. Shopify publishes no such figure on any surface we can find, and repeating one lends a private contract term the authority of a public price. We would rather hand you five questions to ask your rep than a number we cannot source.
What this page adds
The parent answer settles whether three separate brands fit one Plus contract. This answer prices the stores that do fit: the contract, not the store, carries the platform fee; staging stores sit outside the ten-store count; store eleven costs $300 USD a month or a revenue share across all stores; the variable fee differs for B2B and D2C orders; and five terms belong in writing before you add a store.

When this answer changes

  • Shopify publishes a rate, threshold, cap or revenue base for the Plus variable platform fee.
  • Shopify changes the ten-store allowance or the $300 USD monthly price of each store beyond ten.
  • Shopify changes the Plus plan price of $2,300 a month on a 3-year term or $2,500 on a 1-year term.
  • Shopify bills apps per organization instead of per store, which would move where expansion-store cost sits.
  • Your contract moves from the flat fee to the variable platform fee.
