Is right-sizing down from Plus to Advanced a genuine cost-optimization move for a modest-wholesale merchant now that core B2B is free everywhere, or does it usually backfire?
Short answer
Dropping Shopify Plus for Advanced saves a modest-wholesale merchant $1,901 to $2,201 a month in plan fees, and core business-to-business (B2B) features stay (Shopify Changelog, October 2026). It backfires at volume, because Shopify's fees rise on Advanced. The saving is gone above $475,000 to $550,000 a month of third-party gateway orders, or $760,000 to $880,000 of US standard card sales (Deploi arithmetic from shopify.com/pricing, shopify.com/plus/pricing, October 2026).
- Plan-fee saving
- $1,901 to $2,201 a monthPlus at $2,300 a month on a 3-year term or $2,500 on a 1-year term, against Advanced at $399 a month or $299 billed yearly: $22,812 to $26,412 a year (Deploi arithmetic).Sources: Shopify (Pricing, Shopify Plus pricing)
- Third-party gateway break-even
- $475,250 to $550,250 a monthShopify's fee on third-party gateway orders is 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, so 0.4 points more cancels the saving at this volume if the gateway carries every order (Deploi arithmetic from the figures above).Deploi arithmetic from the figures above
- US standard card break-even
- $760,400 to $880,400 a monthUS online standard cards cost 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced and 2.25% + 30¢ on Plus, so 0.25 points more cancels the saving at this volume; gateway and card fees add up (Deploi arithmetic from the figures above).Deploi arithmetic from the figures above

Deploi’s call
Dropping to Advanced is a genuine saving only until the higher fees on Advanced cancel it, and it is the last lever, not the first. Plan cost is rarely the reason a Plus bill feels wrong. Processing rates and app spend are bigger, more negotiable, and don't cost you checkout. Audit those first.
CustomizeMove down to Advanced when
- Your extra fees on Advanced stay under the $1,901 to $2,201 plan-fee saving: 0.4% of third-party gateway orders, 0.25% of US standard and 0.15% of premium card sales, plus any in-store costs and cross-border Managed Markets fees (Deploi arithmetic from shopify.com/pricing, October 2026).
- Your wholesale fits 3 active catalogs with no deposits or partial payments (Shopify Changelog, October 2026).
- Nothing of yours runs on the information, shipping or payment steps of checkout, and no custom app uses Shopify Functions (custom discount and checkout logic).
- Your Plus term is ending, because Shopify lets a 1- or 3-year term be cancelled when the commitment expires (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026).
BuyStay on Plus while
- Your extra fees on Advanced would pass the plan-fee saving, so Advanced would cost more each month (Deploi arithmetic).
- A distributor or key account needs its own catalog, a deposit or a partial payment.
- Expansion stores, checkout extensions on the information, shipping or payment steps, or the 10x application programming interface (API) limit carry live operations (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026).

How much does dropping from Shopify Plus to Advanced save?
Dropping from Shopify Plus to Advanced saves $1,901 to $2,201 a month in plan fees, or $22,812 to $26,412 a year (Deploi arithmetic). Plus costs $2,300 a month on a 3-year term or $2,500 on a 1-year term (shopify.com/plus/pricing, October 2026). Those are starting prices: “More complex, higher volume businesses switch to a variable platform fee based on their revenue and business model” (shopify.com/plus/pricing, October 2026), and our reading is that a store on that fee saves more by leaving. Advanced costs $399 a month, or $299 billed yearly (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026). The downgrade belongs with the other swaps from paid apps to native Shopify features, but it is the only one that removes plan features rather than app features.
The saving starts when your Plus term ends, not when you decide. Shopify's pricing FAQ says that on a 1- or 3-year Plus subscription “you can cancel when your term commitment expires” (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026). So our reading is that your renewal date is the deadline for this decision.
At what sales volume does downgrading to Advanced stop paying?
Downgrading to Advanced stops paying at about $475,000 a month of orders on a third-party gateway, or $760,000 of US standard card sales, if that line carries all your volume (Deploi arithmetic). The lines add up, so a store with both crosses sooner.
| Fee line (US) | Advanced | Plus | Downgrade stops paying above |
|---|---|---|---|
| Third-party gateway fee | 0.6% | 0.2% | $475,250 to $550,250 a month of gateway orders |
| Online standard card rate | 2.5% + 30¢ | 2.25% + 30¢ | $760,400 to $880,400 a month of standard card sales |
| Online premium card rate | 3.1% + 30¢ | 2.95% + 30¢ | $1,267,333 to $1,467,333 a month of premium card sales |
Wholesale orders paid by bank deposit or check count toward none of these lines, because manual payment methods carry no third-party fee (Shopify Help Center, October 2026) and no card rate. Point of sale (POS) Pro, in-person card rates and Managed Markets, Shopify's cross-border selling service, also cost more on Advanced (shopify.com/pricing, Shopify international pricing, October 2026), which the Advanced versus Plus math at $1M a month prices.
What has to be unwound before a Plus store can run on Advanced?
Five Plus-only setups must be unwound before a Plus store runs on Advanced, and the business-to-business (B2B) ones bite wholesale first.
- Catalogs over 3. Advanced allows “up to 3 active catalogs across all your B2B markets” (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so a fourth price list must merge or go. How price tiers count against that cap tells you how many you use.
- Catalogs assigned to companies. Direct catalog assignment to companies and locations stays on Plus (Shopify Changelog, October 2026), so a key account's price list moves into a B2B market.
- Deposits, partial payments and payment requests per fulfillment. All three are Plus-only (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so wholesale terms built on them need a new process.
- Checkout and Functions code. Checkout user interface (UI) extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps run only on Plus (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). So do custom apps built on Shopify Functions (custom discount and checkout logic); public App Store apps with functions keep working (Shopify Functions docs, October 2026).
- Locations, languages, staff and expansion stores. Advanced allows 10 inventory locations and 15 staff accounts, against Plus's 200 and unlimited (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026), and selling in 20 languages against Plus's 30 (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Expansion stores sit on the Plus contract (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so our reading is that each one needs a plan of its own.
When does downgrading from Plus to Advanced genuinely work?
Downgrading from Plus to Advanced genuinely works for a store with wholesale inside 3 catalogs, nothing Plus-only in production and extra fees under the plan-fee saving (Deploi arithmetic). Those fees are 0.4% of third-party gateway orders, 0.25% of US standard and 0.15% of premium card sales, plus any in-store costs and cross-border Managed Markets fees, against $1,901 to $2,201 a month. The usual candidate bought Plus for a headless storefront (one built outside Shopify's themes) that never shipped, or for business-to-business (B2B) features that reached Advanced on 2 April 2026 (Shopify Changelog, October 2026). For that brand the downgrade is a clean $22,812 to $26,412 a year (Deploi arithmetic), because core B2B stays: company profiles, payment terms and volume pricing all run on Advanced.
When those extra fees come close to the saving, price staying as well as leaving: the parts of a Plus deal that can move may close the gap without a downgrade. Our Plus upgrade record says the same thing in reverse: without a Plus-only trigger or a card-rate case, Advanced is the default (Deploi decision record, October 2026).
When should you not downgrade from Shopify Plus?
Don't downgrade from Shopify Plus when a Plus-only feature carries live operations, or when higher fees on Advanced would outrun the plan-fee saving.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- What we’ve seen
- The downgrades that go badly go badly at checkout. A merchant removes a plan, then discovers a shipping-page extension and a B2B deposit workflow were load-bearing, and the rebuild lands mid-quarter. The B2B catalog cap is the quieter one: three feels like plenty until a distributor asks for their own price list.
- Where we disagree
- The "B2B is free now, so Plus is optional" framing that followed April 2026 skips the catalog cap and the Plus-only deposit and partial-payment features. Core B2B went free. Structured B2B did not.
- What this page adds
- The parent prices swapping paid apps for free native features. This page prices the one swap that changes your plan: the sales volumes at which dropping Plus stops paying, and the Plus-only setups a wholesale store has to unwind first.

Related questions
- How much does the typical mid-market Shopify store actually overspend per month on apps that are installed but genuinely unused?
Installed-but-unused Shopify app spend has no credible published benchmark, because the figures in circulation estimate total app spend from listed prices, not bills.
- At $1M+/month in online sales, is staying on Advanced actually leaving money on the table by not upgrading to Plus?
Shopify Advanced at $1M a month leaves money on the table with a third-party processor or a funded Plus-only capability.
- For a brand at $20M GMV where B2B/wholesale is 10%-30% of revenue, is Advanced's 3-catalog limit already a real constraint?
Shopify Advanced's 3-catalog limit binds a $20M brand with 10% to 30% wholesale at its fourth catalog.
- Is it possible to negotiate a custom deal between Advanced and full Plus pricing, or is the plan ladder fixed with no in-between tier?
No Shopify plan sits between Advanced at $399 a month and Plus from $2,300 (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026).
