Is there a subscription app built specifically for Shopify Plus checkout (not just a bolt-on), and does that matter for conversion?
Short answer
No subscription app is built specifically for Shopify Plus checkout: Shopify requires every App Store app to sell through its checkout and subscription interfaces (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). The checkout is the same whichever app you pick, so below Plus it can't separate apps on conversion. Plus changes what surrounds it, like editable consent wording (Shopify Help Center).

Deploi’s call
No subscription app is built for Shopify Plus checkout specifically, because every App Store app sells through the same Shopify checkout. Vendors still market "built for Shopify checkout" and buyers still score it, but every app passes, so delete that row from your matrix. On Plus, score what each app's own checkout extension does instead.
BuyPick the app on retention, not checkout, when
- Your store is below Plus, and every app on your shortlist is on the Shopify App Store, so each one sells through the same Shopify checkout (Shopify developer docs, October 2026).
- Retention depth is the job, which is where our Recharge versus native record scores Recharge BUY (Deploi Build vs. Buy, October 2026).
- Exit terms are unpriced; score contract portability and export completeness above checkout polish.
CustomizeCustomize checkout on Plus when
- You need subscription messaging or an upsell on the information, shipping or payment steps, which only Plus stores can extend (Shopify developer docs, October 2026).
- Your legal team wants its own subscription agreement or consent wording, which only Plus can edit (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

Is any subscription app built specifically for Shopify Plus checkout?
No subscription app is built specifically for Shopify Plus checkout, because Shopify requires every App Store app to sell through Shopify checkout. Shopify's App Store requirements say "Use Shopify checkout" and prohibit apps that bypass checkout or payment processing (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). The same rules bar purchase option apps that don't use the selling plan and subscription contract application programming interfaces (APIs) properly. After a customer buys a subscription at checkout, Shopify generates the subscription contract and shares it with the app (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). Recharge describes the result as "One unified checkout for both subscription and one-time products" (Recharge Help Center, October 2026). So a new install of any App Store subscription app adds no checkout of its own. Shopify's free app against Recharge, Skio and Loop covers how the apps differ instead.
What does Shopify Plus change about a subscription checkout?
Shopify Plus changes the wording and the extensions around a subscription checkout, not the checkout that sells the subscription. A subscription app doesn't need Plus, because Shopify's subscription requirements name supported payment gateways, and Plus appears only against parts of the checkout wording (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Recharge says most stores meet them by updating settings or adding an eligible payment processor (Recharge Help Center, October 2026).
| Subscription checkout element | Basic, Grow and Advanced | Shopify Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Checkout that creates the subscription contract | Shopify checkout | Shopify checkout |
| Subscription disclosure | Shown, and can't be removed | Shown, and can't be removed |
| Cancel text and cancellation instructions | Editable | Editable |
| Agreement label and consent text | Shopify's default wording | Editable |
| Recurring totals and other subscription labels | Shopify's default wording | Editable |
| Extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps | No | Yes |

Does the subscription app change checkout conversion?
The subscription app doesn't change checkout conversion below Plus, because every App Store app hands the buyer the same Shopify checkout. Below Plus, no app can extend that checkout's information, shipping or payment steps (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). The payment gateway does change conversion, because it decides which wallets a subscriber sees. With Shopify Payments, subscribers can use Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal, though some stores get Shop Pay only. On Authorize.net, PayPal is the only wallet (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Recharge lists Klarna, iDEAL and Sofort as unavailable for subscription purchases, and Shop Pay Installments as incompatible (Recharge Help Center, October 2026).
So below Plus, the conversion levers that differ between apps sit before checkout, in the product-page widget and its default. In our judgment, cadence and price framing on that selector move subscription attach rate more than anything after the cart. Weekly and monthly options on one product is where that selector work starts.
When does checkout still belong on a subscription scorecard?
Checkout still belongs on a subscription scorecard in two cases. One is a store still on a vendor-hosted subscription checkout. The other is a Plus store that needs subscription content on the information, shipping or payment steps. Recharge says its old Recharge Checkout on Shopify ran a checkout "completely separate from Shopify" and is now "a deprecated version of the app". A store still listed on it "must convert to the Shopify Checkout Integration to process new checkout orders" (Recharge Help Center, October 2026). After conversion, migrated subscribers keep billing through their current payment gateway, while new orders go through Shopify checkout. Shopify lets a legacy subscription app's existing installs continue if its merchants depend on features that the subscription application programming interfaces (APIs) still lack. It wants every new install on those APIs (Shopify developer docs, October 2026).
On Plus, subscription messaging on those three steps is mostly a checkout customization built with Shopify's checkout extensions. Some apps ship that layer themselves. Loop Subscriptions lists checkout upgrades that turn one-time buyers into subscribers, marked "Shopify Plus required" (Loop Subscriptions pricing, October 2026), so ask each vendor what its checkout extension does on Plus. Deploi's core checkout steps record scores that work CUSTOMIZE on Plus and WAIT below Plus (October 2026).
When should checkout come off a subscription scorecard?
Checkout should come off a subscription scorecard whenever the store is below Plus and every app on the shortlist is on the Shopify App Store, because all of them sell through the same checkout.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- "Built for Shopify checkout" is still used as a differentiator in subscription sales conversations. It describes table stakes, and treating it as a feature distracts from exit terms, which are the thing that actually costs money later.
- Our judgment on where attach rate is won
- Subscription attach rate is won on the product page, where cadence clarity and price framing sit on the selector, because the checkout is the same for every app. Scope the selector before you score vendors on checkout.
- What this page adds
- That Shopify's App Store rules put every subscription app on the same checkout, what Plus changes around it (consent wording and extensions on three steps), and what replaces checkout on the scorecard.
Decision records behind this answer
When this answer changes
- Shopify changes its App Store rule that apps must sell through Shopify checkout and use the selling plan and subscription contract interfaces.
- Shopify opens checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping or payment steps to plans below Plus.
- Shopify lets plans below Plus edit the subscription agreement label or consent text.
- Shopify or Recharge makes Klarna, iDEAL, Sofort or Shop Pay Installments available for subscription purchases.
- Recharge ends support for the last stores on Recharge Checkout on Shopify.
- A subscription app adds or drops a checkout extension that needs Shopify Plus, as Loop Subscriptions' checkout upgrades do.

This follows from Can Shopify actually do subscriptions natively now, or do I still need Recharge/Skio/Loop?
- Do we need multi-frequency subscription logic (weekly + monthly on the same product), and which app actually supports it well?
Shopify Subscriptions supports weekly and monthly on one product with no paid app: one plan takes several options, each with its own delivery frequency and discount (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
