Home>Shopify Plus vs Alternatives>Shopify Plus vs Advanced>Advanced vs. Plus Reporting: The Real Gap

What is the real gap between Advanced's default reporting and Plus's ShopifyQL/analytics tooling for a $10M-$30M brand?

There is no ShopifyQL gap between Advanced and Plus. "Creating a new data exploration is available to merchants on all Shopify plans," and explorations save "regardless of your Shopify subscription" (help.shopify.com, September 2026). The gap at $10M to $30M is API rate limits, multi-store roll-up, and attribution that Shopify never provided.

The premise, corrected

ShopifyQL is not a Plus feature, and it has not been one for some time. Shopify's help centre is direct on both halves of it: "Shopify Analytics' main features are available to merchants on any Shopify subscription plan," and "Creating a new data exploration is available to merchants on all Shopify plans" (September 2026). The reports overview adds that you "can save your changes as custom data explorations, regardless of your Shopify subscription," and describes the query surface plainly: "The ShopifyQL query editor represents the report as a database query using ShopifyQL, or Shopify Query Language" (September 2026).

So if somebody is building your Plus business case on ShopifyQL access, the business case has a hole in it.

Per shopify.com/pricing and help.shopify.com, September 2026.

The rate-limit row is the one to take seriously

At $10M to $30M your reporting question stops being "can I build this chart in the admin" and becomes "can I get the raw data out on a schedule that finance trusts." That is an Admin API problem, and the pricing table prices it: Advanced gets "Up to 2x on select APIs," Plus gets "Up to 10x on select APIs" (shopify.com/pricing, September 2026).

That difference does not show up in a demo. It shows up as a nightly extract that takes four hours instead of fifty minutes, and then as a nightly extract that does not finish before the morning standup during peak. If your analytics strategy is "Shopify is a source, the warehouse is the truth," this row is the one with money in it.

The multi-store row is the second

Shopify's reports can "display data for multiple stores in your reports" for merchants with multiple stores in an organization (help.shopify.com, September 2026). On Advanced you have one store, so the feature has nothing to roll up. Plus includes "Up to 9" free expansion stores (shopify.com/pricing, September 2026), which is what makes multi-store reporting a live question rather than an unused menu item.

If you are a single-store brand at $20M, this row is worth nothing to you. If you are about to open a second market, it is worth a lot, and the reporting benefit rides along with a decision you were making anyway.

The row nobody will sell you: neither plan does attribution

The reporting complaint we hear most often at this size is not "I cannot write the query." It is "my Shopify revenue and my ad platform revenue do not agree." No Shopify plan solves that, because Shopify reports orders and ad platforms report claimed conversions, and those are different objects measured by different parties with different windows.

Upgrading to Plus does not close that gap by a dollar. Closing it is a tracking and data-layer project, and it belongs in a different budget line than the plan fee.

When NOT to use reporting as the upgrade reason

  • When the ask is a specific report. Build it in an exploration on Advanced first. If it builds, you have your answer.
  • When the ask is attribution. Wrong budget, wrong project, wrong vendor category.
  • When nobody has measured the extract. Time your current nightly pull before you buy 10x of something you have not benchmarked at 2x.

The Deploi point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.

  • Our take: The reporting gap between these plans is narrow and misdescribed. Buy Plus for API headroom and multi-store roll-up if you need them. Do not buy it for ShopifyQL, because you already have ShopifyQL.
  • What we’ve seen: Nearly every "we need better analytics" brief we scope at this size resolves into one of three things: a report that already builds natively, an extract-performance problem, or an attribution problem. Only the second one is a plan question.
  • Where we disagree: Plus comparison content still lists ShopifyQL and custom reports in the Plus column, years after they stopped being gated. That is not a small error. It sends buyers to the wrong line item and it lets a real constraint, API throughput, go unexamined.
  • What this page adds: that ShopifyQL and custom explorations are available on every plan, and that the analytics difference that actually bites at $10M to $30M is the 2x versus 10x API rate limit rather than anything in the reporting UI.
