Home>Shopify Plus vs Alternatives>Shopify Plus vs Advanced>Advanced vs. Plus at $1M/Month: Worth It?

At $1M+/month in online sales, is staying on Advanced actually leaving money on the table by not upgrading to Plus?

Advanced at $1M per month leaves money on the table in two cases: a third-party payment processor, or a Plus-gated capability already on the roadmap. The plan-fee gap is $1,901 to $2,201 per month, which is 19 to 22 basis points of that revenue (shopify.com/pricing, September 2026). Above eight figures, card rates are negotiated.

The three money lines, priced

There are exactly three places where the plan choice moves cash. Everything else is a capability argument, and capability arguments should not be dressed up as savings.

LineAdvancedPlusWhat it is worth at $1M/month online

All figures per shopify.com/pricing and shopify.com/plus/pricing, September 2026. Shopify's own note on the Plus pricing page: "Transaction fees and credit card rates vary by region."

Read the card rate as a ceiling, not a number

This is the part that decides the question and the part nobody publishes. Shopify's help centre states plainly that "Shopify Payments rates vary by plan type and market" (help.shopify.com, September 2026). The pricing page publishes a Plus floor of "from 2.25% + 30¢ USD" on the plan card and repeats 2.25% + 30¢ in its comparison table, while shopify.com/plus/pricing says only that card rates vary by country and to contact sales (both September 2026).

At $12M a year in online sales you are not taking a published rate. You are taking a quoted one. So the only version of this arithmetic worth running is the one with a written quote in it, and until you have that quote the honest answer to "is Advanced costing me money" is "we cannot know yet."

We will not print a negotiated Plus rate, and you should distrust anyone who does. The published floor is the most that a Plus merchant pays, not what they pay.

The arithmetic, done twice

If you are on Shopify Payments. You pay no third-party transaction fee at all. Shopify confirms: "When you use Shopify Payments, you aren't charged third-party transaction fees" for Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments, PayPal Express Checkout and manual methods (help.shopify.com, September 2026). So the 0.6% to 0.2% row is worth nothing to you. Break-even then needs a card-rate concession of 19 to 22 basis points on $1M per month. The published Plus floor is 25 basis points below Advanced's published 2.5%. On paper the upgrade clears break-even on the card rate alone, and whether it clears it in your contract is a question for your quote.

If a third-party gateway processes your orders. The 0.6% to 0.2% drop is 40 basis points, or $4,000 per month on $1M processed. That is roughly twice the plan-fee gap before any rate conversation. In this case Advanced is measurably costing you money and the answer is yes.

What the money actually buys you, which is a roadmap

The plan fee is not the interesting number at this volume. The interesting number is what you cannot ship on Advanced at any price.

Two rows on that table are worth more than all the pricing rows combined. The functions row means an Advanced store can install somebody else's discount logic from the App Store but cannot write its own. The checkout UI extensions row means an Advanced store cannot put anything of its own on the information, shipping or payment steps. If your next two years of roadmap contains a bespoke discount engine, a shipping-method rule nobody sells as an app, or a field in checkout that your ERP needs, you are not comparing plans. You are comparing a plan against a roadmap you cannot execute.

When NOT to upgrade

  • When you are on Shopify Payments and have no written rate quote. The whole financial case lives in that quote. Ask for it before you build a business case around it.
  • When the roadmap is app-shaped. Public apps containing functions run on Advanced. A lot of what merchants believe is Plus-gated is already installable.
  • When the trigger is staff seats. Collaborator accounts "don't count towards your store's user limit" (help.shopify.com, September 2026), so your agencies and freelancers are not consuming the 15.
  • When the trigger is reporting. Custom data explorations and the ShopifyQL query editor are available on all plans (help.shopify.com, September 2026). You are not buying analytics here.
  • In the same quarter as a replatform, an ERP cutover or peak. A plan migration is cheap and a plan migration on top of three other cutovers is not.
  • When nobody has priced the 3-year term against the 1-year term. The difference is $200 per month, $7,200 across three years, and it is the easiest $7,200 in this whole decision.

The Deploi point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.

  • Our take: At $1M per month the upgrade is a roadmap decision wearing a pricing decision's clothes. We score Plus BUY the year a Plus-gated capability lands on a funded roadmap, or the year a written card-rate quote closes the $1,901 to $2,201 monthly gap; otherwise CUSTOMIZE on Advanced and re-price Plus every twelve months (Deploi verdict, September 2026). "Leaving money on the table" is the wrong frame because the table has two sides and only one of them is priced.
  • What we’ve seen: The merchants who regret the upgrade bought it on a rate story and never used a single Plus-gated capability. The merchants who regret staying spent two years routing around the functions gate with apps, theme hacks and manual ops, and paid more in coordination than the plan fee would have cost.
  • Where we disagree: The category answers this with a GMV threshold, usually somewhere between $1M and $2M a year, because a threshold is easy to put in a deck. A threshold is exactly the wrong shape of answer. Two merchants at identical revenue can have opposite correct answers depending on one fact: whether a third party touches their payments. We would rather give you the two arithmetic branches than a number you will misapply.

Follow-up questions

Does Advanced get the same 99.99% uptime positioning and priority support as Plus, or is that support-tier difference real?

The difference is real and it sits on a floor of no warranty at all. Shopify's Terms of Service state that Shopify "does not warrant that the Services will be uninterrupted, timely, secure, or error-free" and provides the Services "as is" (shopify.com/legal/terms, September 2026). Only Plus adds a stated 99.99% uptime SLA.

What is the real gap between Advanced's default reporting and Plus's ShopifyQL/analytics tooling for a $10M-$30M brand?

There is no ShopifyQL gap between Advanced and Plus. "Creating a new data exploration is available to merchants on all Shopify plans," and explorations save "regardless of your Shopify subscription" (help.shopify.com, September 2026). The gap at $10M to $30M is API rate limits, multi-store roll-up, and attribution that Shopify never provided.

What's the real difference in bot/fraud protection tooling between Advanced and Plus at meaningful order volume?

Bot protection is the only real gap, and fraud tooling is not. "The bot protection feature is available only for merchants on a Shopify Plus plan" (help.shopify.com, September 2026), while fraud recommendations run "on the Grow plan or higher, or if you use Shopify Payments" and Shopify Protect chargeback coverage "is available for free."

Is the Advanced-plan staff cap of 15 accounts the real reason mid-market brands upgrade to Plus, or is it usually the checkout features?

Checkout features drive the upgrade, not the seat cap. Advanced includes 15 additional staff accounts and Plus includes unlimited (shopify.com/pricing, September 2026), but collaborator accounts for agencies and partners "don't count towards your store's user limit" (help.shopify.com, September 2026). The seat ceiling is soft. The checkout ceiling has no workaround.

If we're currently on Advanced and considering Plus mainly for Launchpad flash-sale scheduling, is that a strong enough reason on its own?

Launchpad alone does not justify the upgrade. Launchpad "is available only to stores on the Shopify Plus plan" (help.shopify.com, September 2026), but most of what it does decomposes onto Advanced: Shopify Flow "is a free app available on the Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Plus plans" (help.shopify.com, September 2026). Buy Plus for the checkout gate instead.

Is it possible to negotiate a custom deal between Advanced and full Plus pricing, or is the plan ladder fixed with no in-between tier?

No published tier sits between Advanced and Plus. Shopify lists four plans and stops: Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus (shopify.com/pricing, September 2026). What moves is the shape of the Plus deal, not the rung: term length at $2,500 for one year versus $2,300 for three, the card rate, and a variable platform fee.

Is 'high-volume checkout' (10K+ checkouts/minute) ever relevant to a brand still deciding between Advanced and Plus, or is that purely an enterprise-scale concern?

High-volume checkout is a drop concern, not an enterprise concern, and the headline figure is not a per-store entitlement. Shopify publishes three different numbers in three places: "10K+ checkouts per minute," "handle up to 40K checkouts per minute," and "10,978 Peak checkouts per minute across Shopify" (shopify.com, September 2026). Only the last one is measured.
