Home>Shopify Plus vs Alternatives>Shopify Plus vs Advanced>Advanced vs. Plus: Bot and Fraud Tooling

What's the real difference in bot/fraud protection tooling between Advanced and Plus at meaningful order volume?

Bot protection is the only real gap, and fraud tooling is not. "The bot protection feature is available only for merchants on a Shopify Plus plan" (help.shopify.com, September 2026), while fraud recommendations run "on the Grow plan or higher, or if you use Shopify Payments" and Shopify Protect chargeback coverage "is available for free."

Two different problems that get filed under one heading

Bot mitigation and fraud screening are not the same job and they do not have the same plan story. Bots are an inventory-fairness problem at the moment of a drop. Fraud is a chargeback-loss problem in the days after an order. Shopify gates the first and does not gate the second, and conflating them is how a fraud complaint turns into a plan upgrade that does not fix it.

What bot protection actually is

Shopify describes it as "a fairness control by blocking known bots from your checkout, and slowing down bot activity" so that real customers can buy limited inventory during flash sales (help.shopify.com, September 2026). It is not a general security product and it is not always-on protection for your store.

The mechanics are specific, and they are the part that decides whether it matters to you:

  • Merchants "must contact Shopify Plus Support to activate it." It is not a toggle you find yourself.
  • The challenge is reCAPTCHA or hCaptcha, the latter with customizable image or object-drawing challenges and an optional custom skill-testing question.
  • Protection applies to "up to 500 individual products or all published products."
  • "Maximum event duration is 60 minutes."
  • The setting that stops bots auto-completing checkout "is active by default," and can be disabled.

All per help.shopify.com, September 2026.

Read the last two together. This is event-scoped tooling with a one-hour ceiling, built for a drop. If your problem is sustained scraping or account-takeover attempts on a Tuesday afternoon, this is not the product that solves it, and upgrading to Plus will not solve it either.

Why "meaningful order volume" is the wrong trigger

Volume does not gate any of the fraud tooling. A store doing 40,000 orders a month on Advanced with Shopify Payments has the same fraud indicators, the same fraud recommendations, the same pre-authorization blocking and the same free Shopify Protect coverage as a Plus store doing the same volume.

What changes the answer is not order count. It is whether you run constrained-inventory releases. A brand doing $2M a month in steady replenishment has no bot problem worth a plan fee. A brand doing $500,000 a month across four sneaker drops has one that is arguably existential, and the plan fee is not the expensive part of solving it.

When NOT to upgrade for this

  • When the complaint is chargebacks. Nothing in the Plus tier reduces them. Look at Shopify Protect eligibility, your Shopify Payments configuration and your fulfilment-hold policy.
  • When the complaint is scraping or credential stuffing. A 60-minute, event-scoped checkout control is the wrong shape of tool. That is a CDN and WAF conversation.
  • When you do not run drops. Bot protection is built for the drop. No drops, no value.
  • When you have not asked what your current risk rate is. Fraud recommendations are already in your admin on Advanced. Read them before buying anything.

The Deploi point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.

  • Our take: The Advanced to Plus delta here is one feature, it is event-scoped, and it is worth exactly as much as your drop calendar says it is. The fraud stack is the same on both plans, and framing this as a security upgrade is not accurate.
  • What we’ve seen: "We have a bot problem" is, on inspection, three different problems: resellers at a drop, scrapers on the PDP, and card testing at checkout. Only the first one is the thing Plus sells. The other two are answered outside Shopify entirely and stay unanswered if the plan upgrade is treated as the fix.
  • Where we disagree: Bot protection is marketed as a headline Plus capability, and on the pricing page it appears as a single unqualified row. The published limits, a 60-minute maximum event duration, a 500-product cap and activation only through Plus Support, change what the row means. Buyers should see those limits before they see the price.
  • What this page adds: that fraud analysis, fraud recommendations and free Shopify Protect coverage are not Plus-gated at all, and the published operating limits of the one feature that is.
