Common Questions

What is kitting in a 3PL context, and when does a Shopify brand actually need it versus just selling components separately?

Kitting is the physical assembly of separate SKUs into one sellable unit inside a warehouse, either pre-built and stocked under its own SKU or assembled at pick time. A Shopify brand needs it once the kit ships as one carton and its components also sell separately. Shopify Bundles covers the storefront free and tracks stock overall, never by location (Shopify Help Center, September 2026).

Should kitting happen on-demand at order time or be pre-assembled and held as its own SKU in 3PL inventory?

Assemble-to-order kitting is the right default for a Shopify brand whose kit mix still changes, and pre-assembled kit SKUs win once a kit's demand is stable and forecastable. Pre-kitting cuts the per-order pick touch and locks components you can no longer sell separately. Shopify Bundles caps fixed bundles at 30 components and tracks stock overall, never by location (Shopify Help Center, September 2026).

Is kitting the right solution for a subscription-box or bundle-heavy Shopify brand, or does that belong on the subscriptions/bundles app side instead?

Physical 3PL kitting is the wrong tool for a subscription box whose contents change every cycle, and app-side bundle logic with a per-cycle pick list is the right one. Pre-kitting a box that changes monthly turns unsold kits into dead components. Shopify Bundles caps dynamic bundles at 150 components and is unsupported outside the Online Store and headless storefronts (Shopify Help Center, September 2026).
