Checkout Extensibility & Migration

Does the checkout.liquid shutdown affect stores on every Shopify plan, or only Shopify Plus stores?

Short answer

The checkout.liquid shutdown hit Shopify Plus stores only, because checkout.liquid, the theme file for custom checkout code, was a Plus-only layout (shopify.dev, October 2026). Every other plan lost app-injected script tags on the Order status page on 26 August 2026 (shopify.dev, October 2026). Shopify then upgraded every store that missed that deadline automatically (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

Deploi’s call

checkout.liquid was Plus-only, and its dates are history. Script tags, the code apps inject into store pages, ran on every plan, and their last date is still ahead. Any advice that treats "the checkout shutdown" as one deadline is advice built on the wrong noun. We score the checkout rebuild BUILD, and WAIT where an audit finds nothing exposed (Deploi verdicts, October 2026).

BuildRun a rebuild program when

  • Your Plus checkout ran Shopify Scripts for discounts, shipping or payments, all deactivated on 30 June 2026 (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • Post-purchase tracking or content sat in the Additional scripts box in Checkout settings or in a script tag, and nothing has replaced it.
  • An app you rely on loads through a storefront script tag, which stops on 1 March 2027 (Shopify developer docs, October 2026).

WaitWait, and re-check before March 2027, when

  • The audit finds nothing on a retired surface, which Deploi's checkout extensibility record scores WAIT (Deploi decision record, October 2026).
  • Every app on the store already ships an app embed block or a web pixel, Shopify's replacements for script tags.
  • Your checkout rules already run as Shopify Functions, the code that replaced Scripts, which Deploi's Scripts-to-Functions record also scores WAIT (Deploi decision record, October 2026).

Which checkout retirements hit Shopify Plus only, and which hit every plan?

Shopify Plus lost three checkout surfaces on its own, and every plan lost two more; storefront script tags follow on 1 March 2027. checkout.liquid, the theme file for custom checkout code, "is available only to Shopify Plus merchants" (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). Shopify Scripts, Plus's tool for discount, shipping and payment logic, was Plus-only too (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Script tags, the code apps inject into store pages, and the Additional scripts box in Checkout settings ran on every plan.

So a Basic, Grow or Advanced merchant reading a 2024 checkout.liquid warning was reading about somebody else's problem.

Did non-Plus stores really get an extra year?

No: non-Plus stores got a year of read-only code, because the Additional scripts box in Checkout settings went view-only on 28 August 2025 (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Code already in the box stayed live until the store replaced its Thank you and Order status pages: Shopify warns that a script and the pixel replacing it record "duplicate events" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Shopify's upgrade guide also offers to deactivate the box's scripts. That replacement was due on 26 August 2026. So for twelve months a broken conversion tag in the box could keep running, but nobody could correct it in place.

Stores that missed the deadline "were upgraded automatically" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), which means anything still in the box stopped with the upgrade. App script tags on the Order status page also stopped on 26 August 2026 for non-Plus stores, a year after Plus (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). If purchase tracking lived in either place, check what the 26 August deadline did to reporting first. Then decide whether to budget for a tracking app.

What had a store that did nothing lost by October 2026?

A store that did nothing had lost every legacy checkout customization by October 2026, because Shopify upgraded or switched off each retired surface once its deadline passed.

  • Shopify Plus. checkout.liquid customizations went with Shopify's automatic upgrades, which began reaching the Thank you and Order status pages in January 2026 (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Why Shopify forced those upgrades has its own answer. Shopify Scripts still published "have been deactivated and no longer work" since 30 June 2026 (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Shopify's quantity rules page for business-to-business (B2B) catalogs still dates the end of Scripts to 28 August 2025 (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so Shopify's own pages disagree on the date.
  • Basic, Grow and Advanced. App script tags on the Order status page stopped on 26 August 2026 (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). The automatic upgrade that followed ended any code left in the Additional scripts box.

The rebuild runs on app blocks and pixels, and "Customizations per market aren't supported on the Thank you and Order status pages" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So post-purchase content that differed by market can't come back as it was. Whether a rebuild goes smoothly depends mostly on app vendors, and rebuilding 5 to 10 integrations has no honest per-store price.

Which script-tag date is still ahead for every plan?

One script-tag date is still ahead for every plan: on 1 March 2027 Shopify stops injecting script tags into storefront pages (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). That is a storefront date, not a checkout date. Since 1 October 2026, apps can't create or update script tags on any version of Shopify's application programming interface (API), though existing tags keep running (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). So a merchant who rightly decided that checkout.liquid was never their problem can still lose a storefront feature in March 2027.

Shopify's storefront guide gives each script-tag job a replacement: an app embed block in the theme to load code, or a web pixel to track behavior. Running a tag beside its replacement loads the script twice, which "can double-count analytics events" (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). Apps created directly in the Shopify admin can't use app extensions at all, so their scripts need moving into the theme or rebuilding as a full app.

When is the checkout shutdown not your problem?

The checkout shutdown is not your problem when nothing in your store ever ran on a retired surface, and proving that is quick. Deploi's checkout extensibility record says a Scripts-deprecation audit "takes a day", and one Deploi audit came back with zero exposure (Deploi decision record, October 2026). The audit is worth the day because each retired surface failed silently. Storefront script tags are a separate check for every store, because Shopify stops injecting them on 1 March 2027 (Shopify developer docs, October 2026).

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

Where we disagree
The standard framing is that non-Plus merchants "got an extra year." They did not. They got a year of read-only code, which is a longer window in which to discover a problem and a shorter one in which to fix it, since 28 August 2025 removed the ability to edit the box at all. The extra year was a freeze, not a reprieve.
Where the exposure sits (our judgment, not a measurement)
Non-Plus stores lose the least, because they customized the least. The severe exposure sits with Plus stores carrying Scripts logic and checkout.liquid behavior that has no one-to-one Function equivalent. On the non-Plus side the damage is narrower and more embarrassing: a conversion tag that stopped reporting in late August and nobody noticed, because nothing visibly broke on the page.
What we refuse to quote
a fixed price for this work sight-unseen. The variable is integration count and app dependency, and both are discoverable in a short audit. We would rather sell the audit.

When this answer changes

  • Shopify moves or confirms the 1 March 2027 date for storefront script tags.
  • Shopify corrects its B2B quantity rules page, which still dates the end of Scripts to 28 August 2025.
  • Shopify opens checkout UI extensions on the Information, Shipping and Payment steps to plans below Plus.
  • Shopify announces an end date for the Script Editor app, its Scripts customizations report or another checkout surface.
