Does the legacy-script removal deadline affect stores that never installed custom checkout pixels in the first place?
Short answer
Yes, stores that never wrote a custom checkout pixel were still affected, because apps added script tags to the Order status page for them. Shopify blocked new ones on 1 February 2025, and existing ones stopped on 28 August 2025 for Plus and 26 August 2026 for other plans (shopify.dev, October 2026). Check the app list, not the code.
- New app script tags blocked
- From 1 February 2025Apps can't create script tags for the Order status page, so an app installed after that date added none there (shopify.dev, October 2026).Source: Shopify developer docs (Order status script tags)
- Existing app script tags stopped

Deploi’s call
Yes, the cutoff reached stores with no custom pixel. The question to ask is not "did we install a pixel," it is "did an app install one for us." For most mid-market stores the answer is yes, and the evidence is an app list with install dates rather than a code review.
CustomizeAudit the app list now when
- A tracking, review, survey, loyalty or referral app was installed before 1 February 2025, when Shopify stopped apps creating Order status script tags (shopify.dev, October 2026).
- A tracking app you pay for has no pixel in Settings > Customer events.
- A review prompt, survey or referral offer no longer shows on the Order status page.
- Paid acquisition matters to revenue: Deploi's checkout tracking record puts this audit first, at CUSTOMIZE.
WaitSkip the audit when
- Every app arrived after 1 February 2025 and the Additional scripts box is empty, because those apps could not add Order status script tags (shopify.dev, October 2026).
- The store launched on Shopify's new Thank you and Order status pages.
- Post-purchase tracking was never in scope, and no app touches those pages.

Why are stores with no custom checkout pixel still affected?
Stores with no custom checkout pixel were still affected, because tracking on Shopify's Thank you and Order status pages often arrived without anyone opening a code editor. Apps added script tags at install, and agencies pasted code into the Additional scripts box. Why the pixel deadline still hit reporting after a Scripts migration covers the cutoff itself; the four routes stood like this on 8 October 2026:
| Route | Who put it there | Status on 8 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Additional scripts box | An agency, a contractor or an employee | Gone: sunset 28 August 2025, and stores not upgraded by 26 August 2026 were upgraded automatically |
| App script tags | An app, at install | Stopped: 28 August 2025 on Plus, 26 August 2026 on other plans |
| App pixels in Customer events | An app or a sales channel | Running: pixels load on both pages |
| Custom pixels in Customer events | Your developer | Running, with no support from Shopify |
So a store with no custom pixel is still exposed when a tracking, review or survey app arrived before Shopify blocked new Order status script tags on 1 February 2025 (shopify.dev, October 2026). The app is still installed and still billing; its script tag no longer runs.
What does the cutoff mean for your store's reporting now?
What the cutoff means now depends on your plan, because Shopify stopped app script tags on Plus and on other plans a year apart.
- Shopify Plus. App script tags on the Order status page stopped on 28 August 2025 (shopify.dev, October 2026). If nobody checked then, post-purchase tracking has had gaps for over a year. A year-over-year view that starts before 28 August 2025 spans the break. Autumn 2026 against autumn 2025 does not, because both periods lack the tags.
- Every other plan. App script tags stopped on 26 August 2026 (shopify.dev, October 2026). That date was also the non-Plus deadline to upgrade the Thank you and Order status pages (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). The gap is recent, so before-and-after periods are easy to compare. Any year-over-year view this autumn spans the break. How long marketing should hold optimization changes depends on your conversion windows.
- Stores with no post-purchase tracking at all. These stores are unaffected on the Thank you and Order status pages. Their remaining exposure is storefront script tags that apps added. Since 1 October 2026 apps can't create or update them, and existing ones run until 1 March 2027 (shopify.dev, October 2026).
How do you find what your apps installed?
Find what your apps installed by checking Shopify's own lists before any code, because the exposure sits in apps, not in code you wrote. Shopify flags these apps in two places: a banner when one is installed, and the upgrade guide's customizations report (shopify.dev, October 2026).
- Confirm the upgrade. Shopify upgraded every store that missed the 26 August 2026 deadline automatically (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so Settings > Checkout should show no upgrade notice under Configurations.
- Read the upgrade guide's Incompatible apps section and the old Additional scripts box if your admin still shows them. The section lists apps whose developers haven't updated them for the new pages (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Match every tracking app to a pixel in Settings > Customer events. Shopify lists only apps that use its Web Pixels application programming interface (API) there (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A tracking app that bills you but isn't listed is the finding.
- Look for what disappeared from the Order status page. A missing review prompt or survey is easier to spot than a missing event. On the new pages, those prompts run as blocks, not pixels (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Compare post-purchase metrics before and after your store's script-tag date: 28 August 2025 on Plus, 26 August 2026 on other plans (shopify.dev, October 2026). Review submissions and referral sign-ups fall quietly, because nothing errors.
Which old script tags still run today?
App script tags still run on storefront pages until 1 March 2027, so a store with no checkout pixel can still depend on one that stops on that date. Since 1 October 2026, apps can't create or update script tags at all, and existing ones keep running until Shopify stops injecting them (shopify.dev, October 2026). Three cases matter for a store that never wrote tracking code:
- A script tag set to load on the storefront and the Order status page (a display scope of all) stopped on the Order status page but keeps running on storefronts until 1 March 2027 (shopify.dev, October 2026).
- An app that shipped its replacement but kept its script tag loads its script twice until then, which can double-count analytics events (shopify.dev, October 2026).
- An admin-created custom app can't use web pixels or theme app extensions, the two replacements Shopify names for storefront script tags (shopify.dev, October 2026). Its maintainer must move the script or ship a real app. That includes a third-party service that had you create the app to paste an access token.
Every checkout and storefront retirement date by plan is mapped in a separate answer.
When does the script-tag cutoff not apply to your store?
The script-tag cutoff does not apply when no app or person ever put code on the Thank you and Order status pages.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- Coverage of this deadline addressed merchants with custom code and told everyone else they were fine. The population that actually needed the warning is the one with no custom code and a long app list, because the app store was the delivery mechanism for most post-purchase scripts and merchants never saw them go in.
- Where we look first
- In our judgment, the post-purchase pages are where merchants are most confident they have nothing and most often have something. The usual case is a review or referral app installed years ago whose post-purchase prompt quietly stopped showing, noticed first as a fall in review volume rather than as a tracking problem.
- What this page adds
- that the 1 February 2025 block on app-created script tags is the fact that makes a no-custom-code store exposed, that the practical audit is an app inventory checked against Customer events rather than a code review of a checkout nobody edited, and that app script tags on storefront pages keep running until 1 March 2027.
Decision records behind this answer
What we’ve built
When this answer changes
- Shopify moves the 1 March 2027 date when storefront script tags stop running.
- Shopify retires the upgrade guide or its Incompatible apps list.
- Shopify lets admin-created custom apps use web pixels or theme app extensions.
- A tracking, review or survey app you use ships its web pixel or customer account extension.

This follows from We already migrated for the June 30, 2026 Scripts deprecation. Does the separate August 26, 2026 pixel deadline still affect our reporting?
- Should marketing pause paid-spend optimization decisions for a period after the Aug 26 migration until reporting numbers are re-validated?
Marketing keeps paid spend on after the 26 August 2026 non-Plus script-tag cutoff (shopify.dev, October 2026) and pauses only structural changes.
- Does the checkout.liquid shutdown affect stores on every Shopify plan, or only Shopify Plus stores?
The checkout.liquid shutdown hit Shopify Plus stores only, because checkout.liquid, the theme file for custom checkout code, was a Plus-only layout (shopify.dev, October 2026).
