Should marketing pause paid-spend optimization decisions for a period after the Aug 26 migration until reporting numbers are re-validated?
Short answer
Marketing keeps paid spend on after the 26 August 2026 non-Plus script-tag cutoff (shopify.dev, October 2026) and pauses only structural changes. The pause lasts until the longest conversion window closes, because pre-cutoff clicks count until then. Google Ads click-through windows default to 30 days (Google Ads Help, October 2026), so Deploi's arithmetic dates the first clean read 27 September 2026.

Deploi’s call
Freeze the changes, never the spend, and put a date on the freeze before it starts. The honest length is set by your longest active conversion window, which for a Google Ads default is 30 days, plus a processing buffer. Anything shorter reads pre-migration clicks as post-migration performance.
WaitHold structural changes while
- Less than one full conversion window has passed since your store's cutoff. Google Ads click-through windows default to 30 days (Google Ads Help, October 2026).
- A channel's reported conversions moved against Shopify's order count, and nobody knows why yet.
- The change would put a Google Ads bid strategy back into learning, which typically takes one to two conversion cycles (Google Ads Help, October 2026).
CustomizeKeep optimizing on Shopify order data when
- A real test order fires every expected event, and the order-to-conversion ratio holds steady.
- The change has nothing to do with measurement, such as a creative refresh.
- Your longest window runs into peak trading: a 90-day window from 26 August closes on 24 November 2026, three days before Black Friday (Deploi arithmetic).
- You already run the order reconciliation that Deploi's checkout tracking record puts first, at CUSTOMIZE.

Which optimization decisions should marketing pause after the 26 August cutoff?
Marketing should pause only structural changes after Shopify's 26 August 2026 script-tag cutoff for non-Plus stores (shopify.dev, October 2026), and keep spending, reporting and checking results against Shopify orders. Shopify Plus stores lost those script tags on 28 August 2025, so their conversion windows closed in 2025. Why the cutoff still hit reporting after a Scripts migration covers what changed on the Thank you and Order status pages; the question here is what to hold while the numbers settle.
| Action | Pause it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Stop spending | No | You lose revenue and the post-cutoff data that would end the freeze |
| Stop structural changes: new campaigns, audience rebuilds, bid-strategy switches, budget moves between channels | Yes, until a full conversion window closes | Each one changes what you are measuring, so its effect and the cutoff's can't be separated |
| Stop reporting | No | Keep reporting and annotate the cutoff date |
| Stop treating platform-reported conversions as truth | Yes, and keep it that way | Shopify order data is the reference, and always was |
Structural changes are the only row with a duration, because measurement lag sets it, not judgment.
How long does the pause on structural changes last?
The pause on structural changes lasts until your longest active conversion window has closed after the cutoff, plus two days for processing. A Google Ads conversion window is "the period of time after an ad interaction (such as an ad click or video view) during which a conversion, such as a purchase, is recorded in Google Ads." Click-through windows default to 30 days and can be set from 1 to 30, 60 or 90 days, depending on the conversion source (Google Ads Help, October 2026). Google Analytics 4 (GA4) processing can take 24 to 48 hours, and reports can change during that time (Google Analytics Help, October 2026). GA4's attribution credit for key events can keep changing for up to 12 days (Google Analytics Help, October 2026), so read attributed GA4 conversions later than the Google Ads dates. Until the window closes, reported conversions still include clicks from before the cutoff.
| Click-through window | First like-for-like read |
|---|---|
| 30 days, the Google Ads default | 27 September 2026 |
| 60 days | 27 October 2026 |
| 90 days, the maximum | 26 November 2026 |
What does a structural change cost while the window is open?
A structural change that touches a Google Ads automated bid strategy while the post-cutoff conversion window is open costs a learning period on top of the conversion lag. Google Ads marks a bid strategy "Learning" after a new strategy, a setting change or a composition change, meaning campaigns, ad groups or keywords added or removed. Google says calibration typically takes one to two conversion cycles (Google Ads Help, October 2026). So a bid-strategy switch two weeks after the cutoff stacks a second calibration onto an unsettled baseline, and the two effects can't be told apart. Meta sets its own learning-phase rules: check them in Meta's Business Help Center before you change a Meta campaign inside the window.
What should marketing do while the window is open?
While the conversion window after the 26 August 2026 non-Plus cutoff (shopify.dev, October 2026) is open, marketing should optimize against Shopify order data and set the re-read date in advance, so the freeze has an end date.
- Annotate every reporting surface with the cutoff date, so anyone reading later knows why the numbers moved.
- Optimize against Shopify order data. Shopify says its reports and order records aren't affected when a browser blocks a pixel, "because Shopify records order and analytics data when the order is processed" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Hold structural changes only where reported conversions moved. A global freeze costs revenue and buys nothing.
- Run the order reconciliation now. Deploi's checkout tracking record diffs each ad platform and analytics tool against Shopify orders over one matching 30-day window.
- Put the re-read date in the calendar: the cutoff date, plus your longest window, plus two days. Vague "once things settle" language is how a freeze becomes a quarter.
- Check consent before you conclude anything, because in markets that require consent, web pixels run only with the visitor's permission (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Consent is also on the list of what server-side tracking can't fix.
When should marketing freeze nothing at all?
Marketing should freeze nothing when the tracking is confirmed clean, or when a freeze costs more than noisy numbers do.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- The standard advice is a flat "wait two weeks." Two weeks is shorter than the default Google Ads click-through window, which means the recommendation guarantees the comparison contains pre-migration clicks. The right unit is a conversion window, not a fortnight, and it differs per channel.
- What we tell clients to do first
- Switch the optimization reference to Shopify order data on day one and keep it there until the window closes. In our judgment, teams that keep optimizing against platform-reported conversions while those numbers are still rebasing spend the following quarter arguing about whether the channel or the migration moved the number.
- What this page adds
- that the length of the revalidation window is set by the longest active conversion window rather than by how long the migration took, that freezing spend destroys the data that would end the freeze, and that a bid-strategy change made inside the window adds Google's learning period of one to two conversion cycles.

What we’ve built
When this answer changes
- Google changes the default click-through conversion window or the 90-day maximum.
- Google changes how long a bid strategy's learning period typically lasts.
- Shopify changes which events web pixels send, or when they wait for consent.
- You change a conversion window, which moves your re-read date.
- Peak trading starts before your longest conversion window closes.

This follows from We already migrated for the June 30, 2026 Scripts deprecation. Does the separate August 26, 2026 pixel deadline still affect our reporting?
- Does the legacy-script removal deadline affect stores that never installed custom checkout pixels in the first place?
Yes, stores that never wrote a custom checkout pixel were still affected, because apps added script tags to the Order status page for them.
- What does server-side tracking NOT fix, even after a full and correct implementation?
Server-side tracking, even correctly implemented, does not fix declined consent, 48-hour deduplication windows or ad platforms' attribution models.
