Checkout Extensibility & Migration
Do we need to budget for a tracking-app plan upgrade (e.g., to a server-side tier) at the same time we migrate to Checkout Extensibility?
Short answer
A tracking-app upgrade belongs in the migration budget only when purchase tracking sat in the Additional scripts box or a script tag, because both stopped on the Thank you and Order status pages (shopify.dev, October 2026). The replacement is a pixel, not a server-side tier. Elevar's entry plan costs $225 a month for 2,000 orders (Elevar listing, October 2026).
- Script tags on post-purchase pages
- Stopped 28 August 2025 on Plus, 26 August 2026 elsewhereAdditional scripts were sunset on the Thank you and Order status pages on 28 August 2025; those pages take tracking as app or custom pixels (Shopify, October 2026).Sources: Shopify developer docs (checkout.liquid); Shopify Help Center (Customization options for Thank you and Order status pages)

Deploi’s call
The migration does not force a tracking-tier upgrade. Your existing implementation choice does. Stores that never pasted a tag into the Additional scripts box pay nothing extra, which is a real and under-stated reward for having done it properly the first time.
CustomizeBuy a tracking app and own the audit when
- A Google Analytics or Meta purchase tag sat in the Additional scripts box, and no free pixel replaces it.
- You send purchases to more destinations than the Google & YouTube and Facebook & Instagram channel apps cover.
- Revenue is $20M to $100M, where Deploi's checkout tracking record keeps the app for destinations and builds the audit and validation around it (Deploi decision record, October 2026).
WaitKeep it out of the migration budget when
- Revenue is under $2M. The record scores WAIT, because the Google & YouTube and Facebook & Instagram channel apps cover baseline pixels "at no cost" (Deploi decision record, October 2026). The Facebook & Instagram listing says "Additional charges may apply" (Meta, October 2026).
- Nobody has audited what fired since the upgrade. The record runs that audit before any app or build (Deploi decision record, October 2026).

Which tracking setups force a new spend after the checkout upgrade?
Only tracking that ran in the Additional scripts box in Checkout settings, or in an app's script tag, forces a new spend. The new Thank you and Order status pages take tracking only as pixels, so each of those tags needs a pixel before it reports again. Shopify says "The Thank you page supports app pixels for tracking and analytics", from an app or a custom pixel (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). When each Shopify plan lost its script tags sets the date your store crossed.
| Where purchase tracking runs today | Forced spend? |
|---|---|
| A pixel in Customer events, Shopify's pixel manager | No. Pixels were never script tags |
| Meta's Facebook & Instagram app at Enhanced or Maximum | No. The purchase event already goes server to server |
| A Google Analytics 4 or Meta tag pasted into Additional scripts | Yes. The tag needs a pixel, which some vendors sell on a paid plan |
| A tag manager container on the Order status page | Yes, and the rebuild is bigger than a one-for-one swap |
| A post-purchase app's own tracking | Only if the vendor puts its pixel on a higher plan |
Can a free route replace the old tag?
Yes for two common pasted tags, a Meta tag and a Google Tag Manager container, because Shopify gives each a home with no subscription.
- A Meta tag. At the Enhanced or Maximum data-sharing level in the Facebook & Instagram app, "The Conversions API sends the purchase event between Shopify and Facebook servers" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). The Conversions API is Meta's server-side application programming interface (API). The app is free to install, and its listing adds "Additional charges may apply" (Meta, October 2026).
- A Google Tag Manager container. Shopify's custom pixel guides include "Create a Google Tag Manager custom pixel" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A custom pixel is added in the pixels manager of the Shopify admin rather than bought as an app (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). But "Adding and using custom pixels is unsupported by Shopify", so its upkeep is yours.
So a paid tier is a choice about accuracy and destinations, not a cost the migration forces. Which Conversions API to set up first covers Google and TikTok.
How much should you budget when you do need a paid tier?
Budget $225 a month for Elevar, the server-side tracking app Audiense now sells, and $650 once purchases go to a third destination or an affiliate network. Destinations set the tier before orders do: Elevar's Core plan sends to only 2 ad or analytics destinations (Audiense, October 2026). Core covers 2,000 orders a month and charges $0.50 for each extra order (Elevar listing, October 2026). Advanced covers 10,000 orders and up to 4 destinations, affiliate networks included. So a store sending purchases to Meta, Google and an affiliate network starts on Advanced, whatever its order count.
For a three-year line, Deploi's checkout tracking record puts an Elevar-class app, setup and audit included, at an illustrative $11,800 to $30,200 (Deploi decision record, October 2026). That is the record's estimate for a rented app, not a quote. Elevar's full plan ladder, Premium and Elite included, has its own answer.
How do you sequence the spend so you only buy once?
Sequence the spend with the inventory first and the tool last, so you pay only for pixels that nothing free covers.
- List every tag that predates the upgrade. Below Plus, Shopify's upgrade guide "categorizes your additional scripts based on their purpose, such as authentication or order tracking", and flags apps that haven't been updated (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Turn on Meta's server-side sharing at Enhanced or Maximum in the Facebook & Instagram app.
- List the channels still fed from a tag, and check whether each vendor ships an app pixel, and on which plan.
- Then price the tool, with destination caps in hand. Buying first is how a team pays Elevar's $650 a month (Elevar listing, October 2026) to replace one tag a free app pixel covers.
- Re-check two weeks after the switch. New pixels require Marketing and Analytics permissions by default (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so markets that require consent report fewer events.
When should the tracking upgrade stay out of the migration budget?
Keep the tracking upgrade out of the migration budget when the migration doesn't change what you can measure.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- Vendors frame this as the moment to upgrade to server-side. The honest framing is that the migration removes one delivery mechanism and you need a supported one, which is not the same as needing a server-side tier. Buy the pixel you need; the server-side case has to stand on accuracy grounds of its own.
- When the spend gets found (our judgment, not a measurement)
- The spend usually gets discovered late, in the week the parity map is signed, because tracking sits with marketing while the migration sits with engineering. Ask the tracking question in the audit, not in the build.
- What this page adds
- The parent dates which checkout surfaces each plan lost. This page answers the tracking budget: which setups force a new spend, what the Facebook & Instagram app's server-side route covers, what Elevar's tiers and caps cost, and how to sequence the spend so you buy once.
Decision records behind this answer
When this answer changes
- Elevar or Audiense changes its plan prices, order caps, per-order charges or destination limits.
- Meta or Shopify changes the Facebook & Instagram app's data-sharing levels, or the Conversions API connection starts to carry a charge.
- Shopify changes what app or custom pixels can read on the Thank you and Order status pages.
- Shopify extends pixel consent defaults or adds a market to its consent-required list.

- How do I prioritize which Conversions API to implement first (Meta, Google, or TikTok) if I can only build one this quarter?
Meta, TikTok and Google take Shopify conversions server to server from their own apps, so none is the first build.
- Does Elevar's basic Data Layer plan work fine for a non-Plus Shopify merchant who isn't using Checkout Extensibility?
Elevar sells no basic Data Layer plan, so a non-Plus store starts on Core: server-side tracking for "Shopify/Shopify Plus" stores at $225 a month (Audiense, October 2026).
- Should marketing pause paid-spend optimization decisions for a period after the Aug 26 migration until reporting numbers are re-validated?
Marketing keeps paid spend on after the 26 August 2026 non-Plus script-tag cutoff (shopify.dev, October 2026) and pauses only structural changes.
- Is server-side tracking overkill for a mid-market Shopify brand doing $10M/year, or is it only worth it above a certain ad-spend threshold?
Server-side tracking is not overkill at $10M a year, because paid spend decides it, not revenue.
