Does Searchspring require Shopify Plus, or does it work on standard Shopify plans?

Athos Commerce does not require Shopify Plus. Athos markets the platform for "your Shopify or Shopify Plus store," and the Shopify App Store listing is free to install with usage billed separately by Athos (both verified September 2026). The real gate is commercial, not technical: Athos quotes every plan, and quoted platforms price against catalog size and traffic rather than Shopify plan.

What the vendor publishes. Athos's Shopify platform page describes improving "Search, Merchandising, Personalization, and Reporting on your Shopify or Shopify Plus store" (verified September 2026). Nothing in the App Store listing, the platform page or the implementation guide names a minimum Shopify plan. The listing publishes as free to install, with additional charges billed separately by Athos Commerce in USD.

What actually gates you, in practice

  1. The quote. With no published pricing, plan eligibility is replaced by whether Athos will sell to a store your size on terms you will accept. Merchants below the vendor's target band are gated by the sales conversation, not by a feature flag.
  2. Implementation cost. Athos's own implementation guide describes an Athos-led "Snap" implementation at 8–12 weeks, with agency-led options scoped by the agency, and implementation priced by custom quote (per Athos's implementation guide, September 2026). That cost lands the same way on Basic and on Plus.
  3. Theme ownership. The results page and collection grids render from Athos's templates. A merchant on a stock theme with no dev resource can do this; a merchant with heavy theme customization will need engineering time regardless of plan.

Where a Plus question is genuinely load-bearing, and this is not it. Shopify Plus gates checkout customization, B2B, Shopify Functions and multi-store structure, at $2,300 per month on a three-year term or $2,500 on a one-year term (per Shopify, September 2026). Search and merchandising are not on that list. If someone tells you to upgrade to Plus in order to run a third-party search platform, ask which specific capability requires it. There is not one.

When NOT to buy this regardless of plan. Under roughly 1,000 SKUs, Deploi's scoring says WAIT: native Search & Discovery covers synonyms, boosts and filters at no cost and the upgrade buys little. Plan eligibility is not the question a small-catalog merchant should be asking.

The Deploi point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.

  • Our take: Plan is the wrong filter here. Catalog size, merchandiser cadence and whether anyone will operate the console are the three that decide it, and none of them appear on a Shopify pricing page.
  • What we’ve seen: "Does it need Plus?" is frequently a budget question in disguise. The honest reframing is that the platform fee plus an 8–12 week implementation is the real number, and it does not change with your Shopify plan.
  • Where we disagree: App marketplaces and agency blogs routinely tag discovery platforms as enterprise or Plus-tier tooling. That framing sells upgrades. The documented requirements do not support it.
  • What this page adds: that the constraint is commercial rather than technical, and which capabilities Plus actually gates, none of which are search or merchandising.
