What does Searchspring actually do for a Shopify store's search and merchandising?
Searchspring is now Athos Commerce, and the Shopify app you install is listed as Athos: Unified Discovery (verified September 2026). The product bundles three things a Shopify store buys separately otherwise: search relevance and autocomplete, faceted filtering, and a visual merchandising console for boosting, burying and pinning products in collections. Athos publishes no list prices; every plan is quoted.
The mechanism: what the platform actually does to your store
Athos ingests your Shopify catalog into its own index: core fields, variant fields, tags as key:value pairs, metafields and metaobjects (per Searchspring's help desk, September 2026). Your search results page, autocomplete dropdown and collection grids are then rendered against that index instead of against Shopify's storefront search. Three products run on top of it:
- Search relevance. Autocomplete, instant search, typo tolerance, synonym groups, personalized search and custom ranking (per the App Store listing, September 2026). This is the part that is genuinely hard to reproduce.
- Faceted filtering. Custom filters over the indexed catalog, free of Shopify's native filter ceilings.
- A merchandising console. Product boosts, custom rules, product recommendations, frequently bought together, and bundles, all operated by a merchandiser, not by a developer.
The implication: you are buying a console, not an algorithm
The pitch is search. The value, for a mid-market merchant, is that a merchandiser can pin, boost, bury and schedule product placement without filing a ticket. Deploi's Build vs. Buy scoring lands on BUY for merchandising rules precisely there: the visual console with preview and scheduling is months of UI work that a vendor amortizes across thousands of stores, and rebuilding it is app development rather than glue code.
The filtering is a different story. We have built faceted filtering and navigation in-theme five times, at around 64 hours of scoped work (directional Deploi estimate). Buying a discovery platform to get filters is the most common overspend in this category.
The edge cases, which are the reason this page exists
- The brand has moved. Klevu and Searchspring combined to form Athos Commerce, announced 2025-01-13 (per Businesswire, January 2025). searchspring.com redirects to athoscommerce.com (verified September 2026).
- The platform is mid-transition. Athos published a rollout schedule: early access in Q4 2025, general availability in Q1 2026, and retirement of the legacy platforms beginning in 2027 with guided upgrade paths for Searchspring and Klevu customers (per Athos Commerce, August 2025). A merchant signing today is signing onto a migration that has a published end date.
- Pricing is not published. Athos lists three plans (Onsite Discovery, Offsite Discovery and Complete Discovery), all with "Request Pricing" and no figures (verified September 2026).
- Reviews are thin and polarized. The Shopify listing carries 21 reviews at just over three stars (verified September 2026, reviews page), with recent one-star reviews naming support responsiveness and auto-renewal terms since the ownership change. That is a small sample, and it is the sample that exists.
- A documented scale constraint. Athos recommends limiting products carrying metafields to 20,000 or fewer, because more "can drastically increase the time it takes your store's data to sync" (per Searchspring's help desk, September 2026).
The Deploi point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.
- Our take: Buy Athos for the merchandising console and the relevance tuning. Do not buy it for filters; that is the cheapest of the three to own and the one we have built most often.
- What we’ve seen: Across our filtering and collection-merchandising work, the failure mode is never the ranking algorithm. It is a rule nobody owns: a scheduled boost still running six weeks after the campaign ended, quietly costing margin.
- Times we’ve shipped this: 8 builds delivered.
- What it takes: roughly 64 hours scoped for faceted filtering and navigation, roughly 150 hours for collection merchandising and product rails, and 300–500 hours for on-site and predictive search (directional Deploi estimates from a small sample of engagements, not measured averages).
- Where we disagree: The category sells "unified discovery": one index behind search, filters, recommendations and feeds. Unification is what makes the fee hard to leave, because rules do not port between engines and every strategy gets re-keyed by hand on exit. We would rather a merchant buy the one surface that needs a vendor and own the rest.

Follow-up questions
At what SKU count does Searchspring's merchandising rule engine start beating Shopify's native Search & Discovery boost/bury tools?
Native Search & Discovery stops covering a merchandising team at Shopify's own hard limits, not at a SKU count: 25 filters per store, 100 filter values displayed per filter, and no filters at all on collections above 5,000 products (per Shopify's docs, September 2026). Deploi scores merchandising rules a BUY once merchandisers trade collections weekly and the catalog clears roughly 1,000 SKUs.
Why would a mid-market brand choose Searchspring/Athos over Algolia specifically, when both serve the same search-and-merchandising need?
Athos Commerce and Algolia sell to different buyers: Athos sells a merchandising console to a merchandising team, Algolia sells a search API to an engineering team. Algolia publishes usage-based prices starting free and billing $0.50 per additional 1,000 search requests on Grow; Athos quotes every plan privately (both verified September 2026). Buy Athos when no engineer owns search.
Does Searchspring require Shopify Plus, or does it work on standard Shopify plans?
Athos Commerce does not require Shopify Plus. Athos markets the platform for "your Shopify or Shopify Plus store," and the Shopify App Store listing is free to install with usage billed separately by Athos (both verified September 2026). The real gate is commercial, not technical: Athos quotes every plan, and quoted platforms price against catalog size and traffic rather than Shopify plan.
Does Searchspring support multi-currency or multi-region catalogs for a Shopify Markets international setup?
Athos Commerce lists multi-currency and multi-language support on its Shopify App Store listing, but publishes no documentation for Shopify Markets catalogs, market-specific pricing or per-market publishing (verified September 2026). Treat multi-region as a contract question, not a feature checkbox: get the market-to-index mapping and the price-field behavior written into the statement of work before signing.
What onboarding/setup timeline should a mid-market Shopify Plus merchant expect when implementing Searchspring from scratch?
Athos Commerce quotes 8 to 12 weeks for an Athos-led "Snap" implementation, and leaves agency-led Self-Snap and API implementations to be scoped by the agency (per Athos's implementation guide, September 2026). Finalized designs must be delivered before Athos starts, so the real clock includes a design phase Athos does not run and does not count.
