What onboarding/setup timeline should a mid-market Shopify Plus merchant expect when implementing Searchspring from scratch?

Athos Commerce quotes 8 to 12 weeks for an Athos-led "Snap" implementation, and leaves agency-led Self-Snap and API implementations to be scoped by the agency (per Athos's implementation guide, September 2026). Finalized designs must be delivered before Athos starts, so the real clock includes a design phase Athos does not run and does not count.

The three implementation paths Athos publishes

PathTimelineWho does the work
Athos-led Snap8–12 weeks (per Athos's implementation guide, Sep 2026)Athos, against designs you supply
Self-Snap"Determined by Agency" (per Athos, Sep 2026)Your agency
API"Determined by Agency" (per Athos, Sep 2026)Your agency

Implementation is custom-quoted, with additional fees for re-theming, re-platforming or custom functionality (per Athos's implementation guide, September 2026).

The steps, and where the calendar actually goes

  1. Design, before the clock starts. Athos states plainly that "finalized designs must be provided prior to Athos starting the implementation" and that "Athos is not a design agency" (verified September 2026). For a mid-market merchant with a design team and a review cycle, this is commonly 3–5 weeks that sits outside the published 8–12 (Deploi estimate, illustrative).
  2. Catalog ingestion and field mapping. Core fields, variants, tags as key:value pairs, metafields and metaobjects. Keep products carrying metafields at 20,000 or fewer to avoid sync slowdowns (per Searchspring's help desk, September 2026). Tag hygiene done badly here costs weeks later.
  3. Front-end integration and tracking. Results page, autocomplete and collection grids rendered from Athos templates, plus pixel and IntelliSuggest tracking so the analytics are real.
  4. Merchandising configuration. Synonyms, redirects, boost and bury rules, recommendation placements. This is the phase your team owns and the phase most often under-resourced.
  5. QA across devices and, if applicable, markets. See the multi-region questions on the related page; confirm behavior rather than assuming it.
  6. Launch and a tuning period. Self-hosted or vendor-hosted, relevance is a permanent habit rather than a one-time setup. Budget merchandiser hours indefinitely, not just engineering hours once.

The plan gate, which is not the one you expect. Shopify Plus is not required (see the related page). What is required is a theme your team can modify and a named internal owner for merchandising. A Plus merchant without that owner will take longer than a Basic merchant with one.

The timing factor specific to 2026. Athos published a platform rollout schedule: early access in Q4 2025, general availability in Q1 2026, and retirement of the legacy Searchspring and Klevu platforms beginning in 2027 with guided upgrade paths (per Athos Commerce, August 2025). Ask explicitly which platform your implementation targets. Implementing onto a platform with a published retirement date means a second migration is already on your roadmap, and the cost of that migration belongs in this year's business case.

The comparison that keeps this honest. Deploi scopes a full on-site and predictive search build at 300–500 hours across 8–14 weeks. The buy path's 8–12 weeks is genuinely faster than building, but not by as much as the category implies: most of what you save is engineering, and most of what remains is your own catalog hygiene and merchandising configuration, which neither path removes.

The Deploi point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.

  • Our take: Add the design phase and a tuning quarter to whatever the vendor quotes. 8–12 weeks is the implementation, not the time until the search bar is actually good.
  • What we’ve seen: Catalog data quality sets the timeline more than the vendor does. Inconsistent tags and half-populated metafields turn a mapping exercise into a data-cleanup project, and no discovery platform absorbs that for you.
  • Times we’ve shipped this: 4 builds delivered.
  • What it takes: 300–500 hours scoped for on-site and predictive search, and roughly 64 hours for faceted filtering and navigation (directional Deploi estimates from a small sample of engagements, not measured averages).
  • Where we disagree: Onboarding timelines in this category are quoted from kickoff to launch. The number a finance lead needs is kickoff to measurable conversion lift, which includes design up front and tuning after, and is materially longer.
  • What this page adds: the three published implementation paths, the design-phase precondition, and the platform-retirement timing that should be on the table before a contract is signed.
