How does a Shopify brand currently on ShipBob or ShipStation evaluate switching to Flexport, given its freight-forwarding heritage?

Short answer

A Shopify brand on ShipBob evaluates Flexport on one test only: whether inbound freight and fulfillment must sit with one vendor. That test can run without moving stock, because Flexport's ocean service moves "containers from port to warehouse" (flexport.com, October 2026), and ShipBob sells freight too (shipbob.com, October 2026). A brand on ShipStation is deciding whether to outsource at all.

Deploi’s call

Run the freight test before you run the switch. Book one ocean shipment into the warehouse you already use, either Flexport freight bought on its own or ShipBob's own freight program. It is the cheapest experiment available, it keeps the incumbent you already trust, and in our reading of both vendors' published material it settles most of the freight case without a migration.

WaitStay where you are while

  • Nobody can put a dollar figure on the freight problem, such as last year's detention fees.
  • Freight bought on its own closes the gap: Flexport's ocean service moves "containers from port to warehouse" (Flexport, October 2026), and ShipBob sells freight through FreightBob (ShipBob, October 2026).
  • Your slowest month's qualifying spend would sit under Flexport's $5,000 minimum (Flexport Help Center, October 2026).
  • You run your own floor on ShipStation and haven't decided to outsource. The ShipHero vs. ShipStation record scores ShipStation BUY for in-house floors at roughly 500 to 25,000 orders a month (October 2026).

BuyMove to Flexport when

  • A quantified freight failure survives the freight-only test, and inbound freight and fulfillment must sit with one vendor, the case the ShipBob vs. Flexport record keeps for Flexport (October 2026).
  • Every month, the slowest included, clears $5,000 of qualifying spend (Flexport Help Center, October 2026).
  • Both vendors have quoted in writing, as the record advises, and Flexport still wins on the same twelve months of orders after the cost of moving stock.

Which decision is a ShipBob or ShipStation brand actually making?

A ShipBob brand is deciding whether to switch warehouses, while a ShipStation brand is deciding whether to outsource at all. ShipStation sells "shipping software" for your own building (ShipStation, October 2026), so that decision is about a lease, a headcount and a pick-and-pack process. Make it against every third-party logistics (3PL) provider on your list, not Flexport alone, because Flexport's freight heritage is irrelevant until you've decided to outsource. The ShipHero vs. ShipStation record scores ShipStation BUY for in-house floors at roughly 500 to 25,000 orders a month (October 2026).

A ShipBob brand is weighing a real switch, and the freight heritage is the whole of the case, because the brand already has storage, picking and packing. How Flexport positions itself against ShipBob and ShipStation sets out each vendor's pitch, and whether Flexport adds anything for a US-domestic-only brand comes first.

How does a ShipBob brand test the freight case before switching?

A ShipBob brand tests the freight case before switching in two steps, and either one can end the evaluation:

  1. Write the freight problem in one sentence, with a number. "We paid $41,000 in detention and demurrage last year" is a case; "We want better supply-chain visibility" isn't. If nobody can write the sentence, stop: the answer is no, and you've saved a quarter.
  2. Test freight on its own first. Book one ocean shipment into your current ShipBob warehouse. Flexport's ocean service moves "containers from port to warehouse" (Flexport, October 2026). ShipBob's FreightBob program covers "Everything from clearing customs to importing inventory", for palletized goods other than food, cotton, and dangerous or regulated goods (ShipBob, October 2026). If that solves the problem sentence, you never switch.

Whether Flexport's freight side needs its own contract explains the freight-only setup. Flexport's Flow Direct product pages are gone; its route into ShipBob warehouses is described only in an October 2022 webinar (Flexport, October 2022), so confirm it with Flexport before you plan around it.

How does a ShipBob brand price Flexport against staying?

A ShipBob brand prices Flexport against staying on four lines: the minimum, the rate card, moving stock and storage.

  • The minimum. Flexport bills the gap below $5,000 of qualifying spend each month, and ocean freight isn't on its qualifying list (Flexport Help Center, October 2026). The store size at which Flexport becomes realistic runs that test month by month.
  • The rate card. ShipBob says "All quotes are customized for each customer" (ShipBob, October 2026). Flexport keeps fulfillment fees in a rate card inside its portal (Flexport Help Center, October 2026). Quote both on the same twelve months of orders, or the comparison is theatre.
  • Moving stock. Get ShipBob's outbound charges in writing. Flexport's base domestic rates "include standard inbound receiving" at its fulfillment centers. Its Reserve Storage charges $13 a pallet or $1.50 a carton to receive stock (Flexport Help Center, October 2026). Its removal fees start at $1.04 a unit, which is your exit cost if you leave later.
  • Storage on a wide catalog. Flexport raised its daily minimum storage charge per product (DSKU) from $0.01 to $0.10 on 5 February 2026 (Flexport Help Center, October 2026), so price it on your real product count.

How should the cutover run if the case holds?

The cutover should run as a split, then a flip, so no single weekend carries the whole move:

  • Split, then flip. Move one category or one velocity band first, and run both warehouses side by side. Shopify's order routing assigns orders to fulfillment locations "based on configured rules" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so the split is settings work; your replenishment logic is what breaks.
  • Keep the overlap short. A second third-party logistics (3PL) warehouse "moves the verdict toward BUILD" for routing middleware in Deploi's 3PL integration record (October 2026).
  • Don't cut over in Q4. A fulfillment gap in November is a revenue event, not an operations event.
  • Agree the returns tail before day one. Returns keep arriving at the old warehouse for months after its last outbound order, and slow-moving products are the ones that get lost.
  • Rebuild the connector last. "Flexport is integrated directly into the Shopify admin" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so the Shopify side is small. The enterprise resource planning (ERP), warehouse management system (WMS) and analytics plumbing hanging off the old connection isn't.

When should the evaluation stop?

The evaluation should stop as soon as one of these is true, because each one means a switch to Flexport can't pay for itself:

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

Where we disagree
The standard advice is to run a bake-off between third-party logistics (3PL) providers. We would rather spend that time proving the problem is real, because a bake-off often answers a question the business hasn't yet asked properly.
Why rate-card switches disappoint (Deploi judgment)
A switch driven by a rate card pays its switching cost up front and in cash, while the rate saving arrives a few cents at a time. A switch driven by a named, quantified operational failure has a reason to hold up.
What this page adds
The parent asks whether Flexport adds anything for a US-domestic-only brand. This page is the next step for a brand already outsourcing or shipping from its own floor: a ShipStation brand is deciding whether to outsource at all, a ShipBob brand can test the freight case without moving stock, and the switch itself has a cutover sequence and costs at both ends.

When this answer changes

  • Flexport changes its $5,000 monthly minimum, or adds ocean freight to the spend that counts toward it.
  • Flexport changes its receiving, removal or storage fees, including the $0.10 daily storage floor per product.
  • Flexport relaunches a freight service into other companies' warehouses, or its Shopify freight app becomes available again.
  • ShipBob changes its FreightBob freight program or starts publishing fulfillment rates.
  • Shopify changes how Flexport connects through the Fulfillment Network, or how order routing assigns locations.
