Shipping & Fulfillment Apps

For a mid-market brand only shipping domestically within the US, does Flexport's Shopify integration offer anything beyond what a domestic-only 3PL like ShipBob already covers?

Short answer

Flexport's Shopify integration offers a US-domestic-only brand no capability beyond what ShipBob already covers. Flexport's import side, China-to-US ocean freight with customs clearance (Flexport Help Center, October 2026), is the part a domestic brand never books. So Flexport's $5,000 monthly minimum, set from 1 January 2026, is a floor with nothing extra behind it (Flexport Help Center, October 2026).

Deploi’s call

No. For a US-domestic-only order profile, Flexport's Shopify integration adds a vendor without adding a capability, and its fulfillment brings a $5,000 monthly floor. Our ShipBob vs. Flexport record scores ShipBob BUY for one US warehouse partner at roughly 500 to 10,000 orders a month. It keeps Flexport for the case where inbound freight and fulfillment have to sit with one vendor (Deploi verdict, October 2026).

BuyStay with a US warehouse partner such as ShipBob when

  • You make your products in the US or buy from a domestic distributor, so no container or customs entry ever reaches your account.
  • You ship roughly 500 to 10,000 orders a month through one US warehouse partner, the band the ShipBob vs. Flexport record scores BUY for ShipBob (October 2026).
  • Your slowest month's qualifying Flexport spend would sit below $5,000, so Flexport would bill the gap for nothing (Flexport Help Center, October 2026).

DependsPut Flexport on the shortlist when

  • An import program from China starts within twelve months, and inbound freight and fulfillment must sit with one vendor. The record keeps that case for Flexport (October 2026).
  • Every month, the slowest included, clears $5,000 of qualifying spend, so the minimum never bills (Flexport Help Center, October 2026).
  • Someone can name the late container or the misclassified entry, with a cost attached.

What does Flexport sell through Shopify that a domestic 3PL doesn't?

Flexport sells one thing through Shopify that a domestic third-party logistics (3PL) warehouse doesn't: China-to-US ocean freight with customs clearance. Its other Shopify product, US fulfillment, grew out of the logistics business it bought from Shopify. Flexport acquired "the assets of Shopify Logistics, including Deliverr" (Flexport, May 2023), and Shopify received a 13% equity interest in Flexport when the sale closed (Shopify, June 2023).

The Flexport App on Shopify covers "Less-than-Container-Load (LCL) and Full-Container-Load (FCL) ocean freight from China to the United States", with customs clearance (Flexport Help Center, October 2026). The same help article says "Airfreight is not available through the Flexport App on Shopify at this time" and "Third-party customs brokers are not supported". Whether that freight side needs its own Flexport contract has a separate answer.

A brand that manufactures in the US, or buys from a domestic distributor, books none of that freight. So the half of Flexport that sets it apart is the half a domestic-only brand never uses.

How do Flexport and ShipBob compare for a US-domestic-only brand?

Flexport and ShipBob sell a US-domestic-only brand the same core service: storage, pick, pack and ship, synced with Shopify orders. Neither vendor is domestic-only, because both run warehouses abroad and sell import freight. So the import rows don't separate them either.

Flexport and ShipBob both cover fulfillment and import freight; a domestic-only brand uses only the fulfillment rows

Take the import rows away and both vendors sell the same service, which means cost decides it. Flexport's cost starts with a $5,000 monthly minimum (Flexport Help Center, October 2026). How Flexport positions itself against ShipBob and ShipStation sets out each vendor's own pitch.

What does Flexport's $5,000 monthly minimum cost a domestic-only brand?

Flexport's minimum costs a domestic-only brand the gap between its qualifying spend and $5,000 in every month it falls short. Flexport's rule reads: "Starting January 1, 2026, a $5,000 monthly minimum fulfillment spend is applicable to all accounts." In a short month, "we will charge you the delta between that spend and $5,000" (Flexport Help Center, October 2026).

Direct-to-consumer (D2C) storage doesn't count toward that spend. Flexport expects that "only merchants fulfilling under roughly 500 orders per month (about 16 order per day) will be impacted by this fee" (Flexport Help Center, October 2026).

So run the arithmetic before anyone books a call. At $3,000 of qualifying spend, the minimum adds $2,000 that month, or $24,000 across a year of such months (Deploi arithmetic). Above $5,000 in every month, the minimum disappears and the choice goes back to service and rates. The store size at which Flexport becomes realistic works through what counts toward the minimum, month by month.

Is freight really Flexport's advantage over ShipBob?

Freight is not Flexport's advantage over ShipBob, because ShipBob sells import freight too. ShipBob's FreightBob is "an end-to-end managed freight and inventory distribution program", "powered by ECU Worldwide". FreightBob promises "Everything from clearing customs to importing inventory, we've got you covered" (ShipBob, October 2026). Maersk also sells a freight program to ShipBob merchants, built on its shared-container shipping and customs services (Maersk, October 2026).

So a ShipBob brand that starts importing later doesn't have to leave its third-party logistics (3PL) warehouse to get ocean freight. That removes the case for paying Flexport now to keep an import option open, usually the last case left once the capabilities match. In October 2022, Flexport marketed Flow Direct as "expedited forwarding to pre-approved 3PL fulfillment centers like ShipBob" (Flexport, October 2022). Its Flow Direct product pages are gone (October 2026). The Chinese copy of Flexport's Shopify shipping page still offers Flow Direct estimates in the app (Flexport, October 2026), so confirm with Flexport before you plan around it. How a ShipBob or ShipStation brand weighs a switch to Flexport runs the full test.

How does a Shopify store connect to Flexport today?

A Shopify store connects to Flexport fulfillment through Shopify's Fulfillment Network app, not a Flexport app. Flexport says the Shopify Fulfillment Network (SFN) app "allows Shopify merchants to quickly integrate their Shopify store with Flexport" (Flexport, October 2026). Shopify says "Flexport is integrated directly into the Shopify admin" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026) and labels Flexport its "Preferred partner" (Shopify, October 2026). The Fulfillment Network app is free to install, and its App Store description names "Flexport, ShipBob, Shipfusion, and ShipMonk" (Shopify App Store, October 2026). Shopify's Help Center partner list no longer includes ShipMonk (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

Flexport's freight app, the Flexport App on Shopify, is the open question. Its listing reads "This app is not currently available on the Shopify App Store" (Flexport on the Shopify App Store, October 2026), on three checks in two languages. Flexport's help article still says the app "is accessible through the Shopify App Store for eligible Merchants" (Flexport Help Center, October 2026). We name the tension rather than call the app retired, because "not currently available" has been a false signal on other listings we've checked. So confirm the freight route with Flexport before you plan around it.

When does Flexport belong on a domestic brand's shortlist?

Flexport belongs on a domestic brand's shortlist only when the brand is about to stop being domestic, or when the minimum stops mattering:

  • Domestic-only is a plan, not a fact. If an import program from China starts within twelve months, evaluate Flexport then, on the freight case.
  • Every month already clears $5,000 of qualifying spend. The minimum never bills, so one vendor and one invoice becomes a real preference (Flexport Help Center, October 2026).
  • Your customs broker is the problem. Flexport's app supports only Flexport's own brokerage (Flexport Help Center, October 2026), which suits a brand fighting classification errors. How Flexport handles customs paperwork on international orders separates import entries from outbound parcels.

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

Where we disagree
The category treats freight forwarding as Flexport's moat against domestic warehouse partners. ShipBob sells ocean and air freight with customs clearance through FreightBob, its managed freight program powered by ECU Worldwide, and Maersk runs a freight program for ShipBob merchants. A domestic brand that starts importing later doesn't have to leave ShipBob to get freight, so paying Flexport's minimum now buys optionality the brand already has.
What we ask first (Deploi judgment)
Which container was late, and what did it cost? When a Flexport line lands on a domestic brand's warehouse shortlist and nobody can name a container, the line came from a conversation about supply-chain resilience, not from an operations problem, and the freight case isn't real yet.

When this answer changes

  • Flexport changes its $5,000 monthly minimum, the spend that counts toward it, or its 500-order estimate.
  • The Flexport freight app becomes available again on the Shopify App Store, or Flexport retires it.
  • Flexport's help article and its product page agree on the app's lanes, or the app adds airfreight or third-party customs brokers.
  • ShipBob drops customs clearance from FreightBob or changes its freight partners.
  • Shopify changes how Flexport connects through the Fulfillment Network app.
