Shipping & Fulfillment Apps

How does Flexport position itself differently from ShipBob or ShipStation for a Shopify brand's fulfillment needs?

Short answer

Flexport positions itself as the only provider running a Shopify brand's freight and fulfillment end to end, a claim Shopify's fulfillment page repeats (flexport.com, shopify.com, October 2026). ShipBob leads with warehouses: 60+ in four regions (ShipBob's App Store listing, October 2026). ShipStation is shipping software, so it holds no inventory; plans start at $14.99 a month (shipstation.com, October 2026).

Deploi’s call

Decide the category before you decide the vendor. If you are keeping fulfillment in-house, ShipStation is the only one of the three on your list and the comparison is over. If you are outsourcing to a third-party logistics (3PL) warehouse, it is ShipBob against Flexport, and the tiebreak is whether inbound freight belongs in the same contract.

BuyShortlist ShipStation, not a 3PL, when

  • Your own team picks and packs in your own building, because ShipStation sells shipping software and holds no inventory.
  • You ship roughly 500 to 25,000 orders a month in-house, the band the ShipHero vs. ShipStation record scores BUY for ShipStation (October 2026).
  • A published tier fits your volume, from $14.99 a month at 50 shipments on Starter (ShipStation, October 2026).

DependsChoose between ShipBob and Flexport when you outsource

  • Pick ShipBob for one US warehouse partner at roughly 500 to 10,000 orders a month, the band the ShipBob vs. Flexport record scores BUY for ShipBob (October 2026).
  • Pick Flexport when inbound freight and fulfillment must sit with one vendor, the case the record keeps for Flexport (October 2026).
  • Either way, check your slowest month against Flexport's $5,000 minimum before you compare rates (Flexport Help Center, October 2026).

Are Flexport, ShipBob and ShipStation three options on one list?

No: Flexport, ShipBob and ShipStation are three different purchases, so they don't belong on one shortlist. ShipStation sells shipping software and never touches your inventory. ShipBob and Flexport are third-party logistics (3PL) providers: both store your stock, pick it and ship it. Flexport adds the freight and customs work that gets stock to the warehouse. Whether Flexport adds anything for a US-domestic-only brand is the wider question this one follows.

How does each vendor pitch itself to a Shopify brand?

Each vendor pitches itself to a Shopify brand for a different job: ShipStation for shipping from your own building, ShipBob for outsourced warehousing, and Flexport for freight and warehousing together. Here is each pitch in the vendor's own words:

  • ShipStation sells control: "The scalable shipping software with carriers, automations, discounts, and more in one login" (ShipStation, October 2026). Its Standard plan runs from $29.99 a month at 50 shipments to $3,599.99 at 100,000, so the fee scales with your volume.
  • ShipBob sells outsourced operations with reach: "60+ warehouses across the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia" and "B2B fulfillment for 150+ EDI-compliant retailers" (ShipBob on the Shopify App Store, October 2026). That means business-to-business (B2B) orders for retailers that trade by electronic data interchange (EDI).
  • Flexport sells the import chain and the warehouse as one service. Flexport calls itself "the only third-party logistics provider" that runs "freight, distribution, and direct-to-consumer orders end to end" (Flexport, October 2026). Its Shopify help article adds "24/7 support from Flexport's logistics experts on customs clearance" (Flexport Help Center, October 2026).

How does Shopify connect each vendor?

Shopify integrates Flexport directly into the Shopify admin, while every other third-party logistics (3PL) partner on its Help Center list connects by installing an app (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). That list names Amazon MCF (Multi-Channel Fulfillment) and Buy with Prime, Bigblue, DHL Fulfillment, GoBolt, Mayple, Shipfusion and ShipBob. ShipMonk appears in the Fulfillment Network app's App Store description, not on the Help Center list (Shopify App Store, October 2026). ShipStation connects through its own app (ShipStation on the Shopify App Store, October 2026).

The difference is dependency, not quality. A built-in connection means one fewer vendor maintaining a connector. It also ties Flexport's integration roadmap to two companies linked by money. Shopify received a 13% equity interest in Flexport when it sold Shopify Logistics (Shopify, June 2023). Shopify's fulfillment page also labels Flexport its "Preferred partner" (Shopify, October 2026). Neither shape is strictly better, so know which one you're buying before you scope the middleware.

Can a brand use ShipBob and Flexport together?

Yes: a brand can use ShipBob and Flexport together, with ShipBob for the warehouse and Flexport for the container, so "both" is a fourth option beside Flexport, ShipBob and ShipStation. Flexport's ocean service moves "containers from port to warehouse" (Flexport, October 2026). Flexport's terms add "supplemental terms and conditions" for each service, listing ocean freight and US fulfillment separately (Flexport Terms and Conditions, October 2026). Whether Flexport's freight side needs its own contract maps the two contracts.

Flexport's packaged route into ShipBob, Flow Direct, is another matter. In October 2022, Flexport marketed it as "expedited forwarding to pre-approved 3PL fulfillment centers like ShipBob", meaning third-party logistics (3PL) warehouses (Flexport, October 2022). Its own product pages no longer exist (October 2026), so confirm it with Flexport before you plan around it. ShipBob also sells import freight with customs clearance through its own FreightBob program (ShipBob, October 2026), so the container can stay with ShipBob too. How a ShipBob or ShipStation brand tests a switch to Flexport compares the two freight routes.

When is a three-way comparison the wrong exercise?

A three-way comparison is the wrong exercise while a question underneath it is still open: whether to outsource, whether your volume justifies a warehouse contract, or whether the real problem is freight. So check these tests before you request three quotes:

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

Where we disagree
Comparison content treats Flexport and ShipBob as rivals with a clean split at the border: Flexport for imports, ShipBob for domestic orders. The border is not the split. ShipBob sells import freight with customs clearance through its FreightBob program, and Flexport now runs warehouses in Canada and the UK as well as the US. The genuinely exclusive Flexport capability is customs brokerage by its own licensed broker under the same roof as the warehouse, which is narrower than the marketing implies and worth real money to precisely the brands that are fighting classification and detention costs today.
What a mixed shortlist tells us (Deploi judgment)
A shortlist that mixes ShipStation with two 3PLs is a sign the brand hasn't decided whether to keep its warehouse. Settle that in its own week first, because it is the decision with people and a lease attached.
What this page adds
The parent asks whether Flexport adds anything for a US-domestic-only brand. This page compares how the three vendors pitch themselves to any Shopify brand: ShipStation is shipping software with published tiers rather than a third 3PL, Shopify builds Flexport into the admin while the other partners on its list connect through apps, and ShipBob's own freight program means freight no longer splits the two warehouses cleanly.

When this answer changes

  • ShipStation changes its plan prices or shipment tiers, from $14.99 a month at 50 shipments on Starter as of October 2026.
  • Flexport changes its $5,000 monthly minimum or its estimate that merchants under roughly 500 orders a month pay it.
  • Shopify changes how Flexport connects, or adds or drops partners on its Fulfillment Network list.
  • ShipBob drops customs clearance from FreightBob, or Flexport relaunches a freight service into other companies' warehouses.
  • The Flexport freight app becomes available again on the Shopify App Store, or Flexport retires it.
