Can GemPages' funnel pages be built entirely without any developer involvement, or does the AI layer still need Liquid tweaks?
Short answer
GemPages funnel pages need no developer until a page shows custom data or an app GemPages can't place without code. GemPages' AI builds editable GemPages elements, not Liquid (GemPages AI guide, October 2026), so the AI layer itself needs no Liquid tweaks. Showing a product metafield still means pasting Liquid into a Custom Code element (GemPages metafield guide, October 2026).

Deploi’s call
The no-code claim holds for the work marketing does, AI-built pages included, because GemPages' AI layer builds the same editable elements. It breaks at custom data, at apps GemPages can't place, at headless Instant Landing Pages and at the exit. That is an honest product boundary, and GemPages' own guides document each break point (Deploi position, October 2026).
BuyRun GemPages without a developer when
- No developer can reach your theme, a profile Deploi's GemPages vs. Theme Sections record scores BUY (October 2026).
- Every app you need has a GemPages element or a theme app block, the app's block in Shopify's theme editor, so nothing needs pasted code.
- Funnel pages use standard product fields such as title, price and images, not metafields.
BuildBuild theme sections instead when
- A developer can reach the theme, a profile the GemPages vs. Theme Sections record scores BUILD (Deploi Build vs. Buy, October 2026).
- Most funnel pages show product or variant metafields, which GemPages adds only through Liquid.
- Your key apps lack both GemPages elements and theme app blocks, so every page would carry pasted code.
Basis: GemPages vs. Theme Sections: Rent the Builder or Own the Pages?, our Build vs. Buy decision record, scored BUILD.
Can a marketer build GemPages funnel pages with no developer at all?
A marketer can build, publish and test GemPages funnel pages with no developer, post-purchase offer included, as long as each page uses GemPages' own elements. GemPages' listing promises pages built "by drag & drop without coding" and "160+ app integrations" (Shopify App Store, October 2026). How GemPages' funnel differs from PageFly and Shogun has its own answer.
The no-code claim breaks in six places, and GemPages documents every one of them:
- Code: an app with no GemPages element or theme app block, styling the editor can't reach, custom data such as metafields, and most apps on headless pages.
- Admin work or a rebuild: a theme change, and leaving GemPages.
So the honest answer is no developer for the pages marketing builds, and some code at the edges.
Does GemPages' AI layer need Liquid tweaks?
GemPages' AI layer does not need Liquid tweaks for what it builds, because it builds with GemPages' own editable elements. GemPages MCP (Model Context Protocol) recreates a design from an image, a URL or finished HTML (page code) "using editable GemPages elements" (GemPages AI guide, October 2026). GemAI turns "any image or URL into an editable layout", with 300 sections on the Build plan and unlimited on Optimize (Shopify App Store, October 2026). So AI output lands as the same elements a marketer edits by hand.
Two limits remain. GemPages says "GemPages MCP is currently in beta", and warns: "The level of editability may also vary depending on the HTML supplied and the elements currently supported" (GemPages Help Center, October 2026). And because the AI builds with the same elements, it inherits their gaps: metafields and unsupported apps still need code after the AI has finished.
Which apps can GemPages add to a funnel page without code?
GemPages adds an app without code when the app has a GemPages element or a theme app block; otherwise someone pastes the app's code. GemPages' guide for its current editor, version 7, names three routes (GemPages Help Center, October 2026):
- A pre-built app element, dragged onto the page.
- A Custom Code element holding the app's code.
- A Shopify App element for "Shopify apps that work with your theme". It places the app's block from Shopify's theme editor and "doesn't necessitate any snippet code", once the page is published (GemPages Help Center, October 2026).
Instant Landing Pages (ILP), GemPages' headless pages, shrink the list. GemPages names four apps that work on an ILP page: Yotpo Loyalty, Judge.me Reviews, Loox Reviews and Klaviyo. It warns that "many apps do not support headless environments" (GemPages Help Center, October 2026). Any other app on an ILP page needs custom code, and only if the app supports headless setups. So a headless funnel page is the likeliest place a developer appears.
Where does a GemPages funnel page still need code?
A GemPages funnel page still needs code for styling the editor can't reach and for custom data such as metafields. GemPages' Custom Code element takes HTML (page markup), CSS (styling), JavaScript and Liquid (GemPages Help Center, October 2026), so both kinds of code end up there.
Metafields are the clearest case. GemPages' metafield guide says "no coding required", then has you paste Liquid such as {{product.metafields.custom.product_test}} into the Custom Code element's HTML/Liquid tab (GemPages metafield guide, October 2026). Variant metafields go further: GemPages says "you need to use a Custom Code element with Liquid referencing the variant object", plus a script that swaps the text when a shopper picks a variant (GemPages Help Center, October 2026). So any funnel sales page that shows ingredients, sizes or specifications stored in metafields carries Liquid.
Do theme changes or leaving GemPages need a developer?
Theme changes need admin work rather than a developer, and leaving GemPages no longer needs hand-edited code, but it does need the pages rebuilt. After a theme change, "Default GemPages Templates from your previous theme will not transfer automatically and require manual republishing" (GemPages Help Center, October 2026). What a Plus brand's theme launch does to GemPages content has its own answer.
Leaving is automated up to a point. GemPages' Uninstall Safely feature asks you to "Confirm to remove all GemPages’ code from your theme", and then "the status of all your GemPages templates will transition to Draft" (GemPages Help Center, October 2026). So the exit needs no code edits, but every page GemPages served needs a replacement, and what a hand-coded rebuild costs has its own answer.
How much developer time does a GemPages funnel program need?
In Deploi's judgment, a GemPages funnel program needs developer time at setup and at exit, and close to none in between, provided somebody records every piece of custom code. At setup, the work is placing app code and metafield Liquid once, correctly. The failure mode is not "you need a developer". It is code pasted by whoever is available into a Custom Code element nobody documents, which becomes an unlabelled script on a revenue page eighteen months later.
Keep a one-line register of every Custom Code element: which page, what it does, who added it and which app it belongs to. The register costs nothing and makes the exit cheaper, so start it on day one.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- What we’ve seen
- In our experience, the undocumented Custom Code element is the most expensive object to unwind in a page-builder program. It is also the cheapest thing in the world to prevent: a four-column register, maintained by the person pasting the code. We recommend this on every builder engagement regardless of vendor.
- Where we disagree
- Both sides of this argument are overstated. Vendors say no developer ever; agencies say you will need one constantly, which is convenient for agencies. Our answer is that developer time clusters at setup, when app code and data bindings go in, and at exit, with near zero in between, provided somebody keeps the register.
- Where we would buy rather than build
- exactly this profile. A team with no developer, standard integrations and a weekly campaign cadence is the case GemPages was designed for, and we would not talk them out of it.
- What this page adds
- The parent says where GemPages sits among page builders; this page maps where its no-code claim breaks today, from GemPages' own documentation: metafields that need Liquid, apps without a GemPages element or theme app block, headless pages, what the AI layer builds, and an exit that needs no code edits but a rebuild.

- Is GemPages actually a good fit for a mid-market Plus store, or is it built mainly for small dropshipping funnels?
GemPages, a Shopify page builder, fits a single-storefront Plus brand, and it is not built mainly for dropshipping: its pricing page pitches the Enterprise plan at "Shopify Plus users" (GemPages pricing, October 2026).
- What's the realistic agency cost to rebuild a GemPages-built funnel program into a hand-coded, faster-loading version?
A hand-coded rebuild of a GemPages funnel program has no published price benchmark, so Deploi quotes no dollar figure.
- Does GemPages' funnel builder support upsell/cross-sell offers natively, or do I still need a separate app like Rebuy?
GemPages' funnel builder supports upsells natively only after payment, with up to two offers; its funnel has no cart step and leaves checkout to Shopify (GemPages Help Center, October 2026).
