Gorgias vs Intercom: which fits a Shopify Plus store better for order-context support?

Gorgias and Intercom both surface Shopify order context and both allow refunds from the inbox, so the order-context gap has closed. The live difference is the billing unit. Gorgias charges by ticket volume with unlimited agents above the entry tier; Intercom charges $29, $85 and $132 per seat per month plus $0.99 per Fin resolution (intercom.com, September 2026).

The premise of this comparison has expired

For years the Gorgias versus Intercom answer was easy: Gorgias knew about your orders and Intercom did not. Intercom was a messaging product for SaaS onboarding that happened to be usable for support.

That gap has closed. Intercom's Shopify App Store listing, published as "Fin AI Agent & Intercom," states that teams "get full visibility into orders, shipping, and customer data, and can take action without leaving the Intercom inbox," and the listing names editing shipping information, issuing refunds and creating orders as in-inbox actions (per apps.shopify.com, September 2026).

So if you are choosing on order context alone, you are choosing on a criterion that no longer separates them. Choose on something that does.

(Gorgias per apps.shopify.com and docs.gorgias.com; Intercom per intercom.com/pricing and apps.shopify.com; all September 2026.)

Note the billing-basis difference in rows two and three, because it is the kind of thing that turns into an argument at renewal. Intercom's own pricing page shows $29, $85 and $132 per seat per month; its Shopify listing shows $39, $99 and $139 per month with annual totals of $348, $1,020 and $1,584. The lower set is the annual-commitment rate and the higher set is monthly billing. Both are real, they are not a discrepancy, and quoting one against the other is how a comparison spreadsheet ends up wrong by a third.

The question that actually decides it

Is your support queue reactive or is it part of the product?

Gorgias assumes reactive. Tickets arrive because something happened to an order, and the product is optimized for resolving them fast: macros, order actions, ticket-priced so cost tracks volume rather than headcount.

Intercom assumes conversational. The product's thesis is that the messenger is a surface where you sell, onboard and support, and Fin is now the front of it at 99 cents a resolution. That is a genuinely strong thesis for a considered-purchase or subscription brand where pre-purchase questions convert. It is an expensive thesis for a brand whose queue is 70% where-is-my-order, because you are paying seat pricing for a messaging platform to do ticket work.

Where each one wins, concretely

  • Gorgias wins when the queue is order-shaped, the team flexes seasonally, and you want cost to track tickets rather than headcount. A store adding eight temporary agents for Q4 pays nothing extra on Gorgias and eight seats on Intercom.
  • Intercom wins when pre-purchase conversation drives revenue, when the same tool needs to handle onboarding or activation as well as support, or when you want to run Fin against an existing helpdesk without replacing it. Fin is sold standalone with no seat requirement, which is a real option and the one most teams miss.
  • Neither wins if you have not measured your ticket mix. Pull a month of tickets and tag them order-status, returns, product question, pre-purchase. The proportions answer this page.

When NOT to move to either

Below roughly 500 tickets a month, our decision record's verdict is WAIT: the native shared inbox, customer accounts and Flow cover the queue at no extra software cost (Deploi decision record, September 2026). Both of these products are priced for a problem you may not have yet.

The Deploi point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.

  • Our take: Order context is no longer the differentiator between these two, and any comparison still leading with it is running on 2023 information. Choose on billing unit and on whether your messenger is a revenue surface. For most Shopify Plus DTC brands that points at Gorgias, and the reason is the shape of the queue rather than a missing Intercom feature.
  • What we’ve seen: Intercom lands well at brands where a considered purchase generates real pre-sale conversation, and lands badly where it was bought as a cheaper-looking helpdesk and then had seats added until it was not. The seat count, not the platform, is what makes it expensive.
  • Where we disagree: The category still frames Intercom as the chat tool and Gorgias as the helpdesk. Both now sell an AI agent priced per resolution and both act on Shopify orders. The interesting question in 2026 is not which one has order context. It is whether you want AI deflection priced per outcome on top of seats, or bundled into a ticket allowance.
  • What this page adds: that Intercom's Shopify app now supports refunds, order creation and shipping edits from the inbox, that Fin is available standalone at $0.99 per outcome without buying seats, and that Intercom's two published price sets are annual versus monthly billing rather than a contradiction.
