Gorgias vs Zendesk: which is the right helpdesk once support tickets outgrow a simple Shopify-native tool?

Gorgias and Zendesk price on different units, and the unit decides the answer. Gorgias bills by ticket volume: $10, $60, $360 and $900 per month for 50, 300, 2,000 and 5,000 tickets, with unlimited agents above the entry tier. Zendesk bills per agent: $55 and $115 per agent per month billed annually (vendor pricing pages, September 2026).

The comparison everyone runs, and the one that decides it

The usual Gorgias versus Zendesk comparison is a feature grid: macros, routing, SLAs, reporting, AI. Run it and Zendesk wins on paper, because Zendesk has been building service software for a wider set of industries for longer. The grid is real and it is not how the decision gets made at a $20M to $500M ecommerce brand.

What decides it is that the two vendors sell different units of the same thing. Gorgias prices conversations. Zendesk prices people. Which one is cheaper for you is arithmetic, and which one is right for you is a question about whether your support queue is shaped like a store.

Do the arithmetic before you read another feature grid

Take a store doing 2,000 tickets a month. Gorgias Pro is $360, which is 18 cents a ticket. On Zendesk you are buying seats, so the cost depends entirely on how many agents 2,000 tickets needs. At a working assumption of roughly 500 tickets per agent per month, that is four agents: $220 on Suite Team, $460 on Suite Professional.

(The 500-tickets-per-agent figure is a Deploi rule of thumb from client support teams, not an official benchmark from either vendor, and it moves a long way with channel mix and AI deflection.)

Which tells you something the vendor decks will not. Zendesk is frequently the cheaper license, and the ticket-priced model is not automatically the value play. Gorgias's model wins on a different axis: it decouples cost from headcount, so seasonal staffing, agencies and part-time weekend cover do not each add a line item. Zendesk's model wins when your team is small and your ticket count is high, which is exactly the profile a good macro library produces.

So what actually makes Gorgias the right answer when it is

Not price. Order context inside the ticket.

Gorgias's Shopify App Store listing requests access to edit orders, covering draft orders, order fulfillments, order edits and full order history, plus product and inventory visibility (per apps.shopify.com, September 2026). That is the difference between an agent answering a where-is-my-order ticket in one screen and an agent alt-tabbing into Shopify admin, finding the order, acting, and coming back. Multiply by the volume of a DTC queue, where a large share of tickets are order-status, returns and refunds, and the handle-time saving is where the money is.

Zendesk integrates with Shopify too, and its listing is free to install with the Zendesk subscription billed separately. The integration is competent. It is also one of several hundred integrations in a product whose center of gravity is elsewhere.

The decision, stated as conditions

Your situationAnswer
Under roughly 500 tickets a monthNeither yet. The native shared inbox, customer accounts and Flow cover it at no extra software cost (Deploi decision record, September 2026)
Shopify is effectively the whole support surfaceGorgias. Order context and DTC-tuned macros pay back immediately
Store tickets dominate but non-store tickets are growingGorgias holds. Our record's move signal is when non-store tickets pass roughly a third of the queue
Multi-brand routing, B2B contracts, or contractual SLAs shape the queueZendesk. Enterprise routing and SLA machinery are genuinely its strength
Support is one channel in a wider service organisationZendesk, and the question was never really about ecommerce

A pricing discrepancy worth knowing before you budget

Zendesk's Shopify App Store listing quotes a range up to "$150 / month per agent/month billed annually" for Suite Enterprise. zendesk.com/pricing no longer publishes an Enterprise price at all; it shows Suite Team at $55, Suite Professional at $115, and "Talk to Sales" for Suite Enterprise plus Copilot (both verified 14 September 2026). Budget from the vendor's own page, not the app listing, and treat any Enterprise figure as a negotiation rather than a rate.

The Deploi point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.

  • Our take: We score this BUY Gorgias for store-first support and BUY Zendesk when the queue outgrows the store (Deploi verdicts, September 2026). The differentiator is order context in the ticket, not ticketing features. Zendesk wins when support is one channel in a wider service organisation, which most DTC brands at this stage are not.
  • What we’ve seen: The teams that regret Gorgias are the ones that bought it for price and then grew a non-ecommerce queue around it. The teams that regret Zendesk bought it for the feature grid and staffed a DTC queue against a per-seat licence. Both regrets are the pricing-model mistake, arrived at from opposite directions.
  • What we refuse to quote: an all-in monthly figure without your ticket count and channel mix. Two brands at the same GMV routinely differ by a factor of three on ticket volume, and the whole comparison pivots on that number.
  • Where we disagree: The category answers this with a feature comparison, and the feature comparison is close to irrelevant below enterprise scale. Both products will ticket, tag, route and report perfectly well. We would rather argue about whether your cost should track conversations or headcount, because that is the line item you will still be paying in three years.
