Gorgias vs Zendesk: which is the right helpdesk once support tickets outgrow a simple Shopify-native tool?

Short answer

Gorgias is the right helpdesk once tickets outgrow Shopify's native tools, but only while the store dominates the support queue. Zendesk wins when multi-brand routing, business-to-business (B2B) contracts or contractual service levels shape the queue. Gorgias prices tickets, never agents, so cost tracks volume; Zendesk charges $55 or $115 per agent a month, billed annually (gorgias.com, zendesk.com, October 2026).

Deploi’s call

We score Gorgias BUY for store-first support and Zendesk BUY once the queue outgrows the store (Deploi verdicts, October 2026). The differentiator is how much of the Shopify order workflow runs inside the ticket, not ticketing features. Zendesk wins when support is one channel in a wider service organization, which most direct-to-consumer (DTC) brands at this stage are not.

BuyChoose Gorgias when

  • The Shopify store is the whole support surface: orders, returns and refunds (Deploi's Gorgias vs. Zendesk record, October 2026).
  • Agents need to edit, duplicate or create orders inside the ticket, which Gorgias does from its sidebar (Gorgias Help Center, October 2026).
  • Headcount flexes with the season, because Gorgias prices tickets, never agents (Gorgias, October 2026).

BuyChoose Zendesk when

  • Multi-brand routing, business-to-business (B2B) contracts or contractual service levels shape the queue (the same record, October 2026).
  • Non-store tickets pass roughly a third of the queue, the record's move signal.
  • Phone becomes a rostered channel, where Zendesk's telephony earns its setup.

Why does the billing unit decide Gorgias versus Zendesk?

The billing unit decides Gorgias versus Zendesk because the two helpdesks charge for different things. Gorgias charges by ticket and says its helpdesk is "never priced per agent" (Gorgias, October 2026). Zendesk says its pricing is "primarily seat-based (per agent, per month)" (Zendesk, October 2026). So a Gorgias bill tracks ticket volume, and a Zendesk bill tracks headcount.

The comparison most teams run is a feature grid: macros, routing, service-level targets, reporting and artificial intelligence (AI). Zendesk wins that grid on paper, because it builds service software for many industries, not only ecommerce. The grid is real, and it is not how a $20M to $500M Shopify brand should choose. The deciding question is whether your support queue is shaped like a store.

What do Gorgias and Zendesk charge, side by side?

Billed annually, Gorgias charges $50 to $750 a month for 300 to 5,000 tickets, and Zendesk $55 or $115 per agent a month (Gorgias, Zendesk, October 2026). Monthly billing costs more on both, so compare like with like.

Which helpdesk costs less at 2,000 tickets a month?

At 2,000 tickets a month, Zendesk Suite Team costs less than Gorgias, and Suite Professional costs more. Gorgias Pro is $300 a month billed annually (Gorgias, October 2026). On Zendesk the cost depends on how many agents 2,000 tickets needs. At about 500 tickets per agent a month, that is four agents: $220 on Suite Team or $460 on Suite Professional, billed annually (Zendesk, October 2026).

The 500-ticket figure is Deploi's working assumption, not a vendor benchmark, and channel mix and artificial intelligence (AI) deflection move it a long way. Billed monthly, the same comparison is $360 for Gorgias against $276 or $596 for four Zendesk agents (Deploi arithmetic from the published prices).

So ticket pricing is not automatically the value play. Gorgias wins on a different axis: seasonal agents, weekend cover and an agency overflow team add no seat. Zendesk's model wins when a small team clears a high ticket count, which is the profile a good macro library produces. AI changes both bills. Zendesk includes 5 automated resolutions per agent a month on Suite Team and 10 on Suite Professional, then bills $1.50 to $2.00 each (Zendesk, October 2026). When Gorgias's AI Agent resolves a ticket with no human, Gorgias charges the ticket fee plus an automation fee (Gorgias Help Center).

What can agents do to a Shopify order inside each helpdesk?

Agents in either helpdesk can refund and cancel a Shopify order without leaving the ticket, but only Gorgias also edits, duplicates and creates orders there. Zendesk's Shopify app refunds fulfilled or unfulfilled orders, in full or by line item, and cancels unfulfilled ones (Zendesk Help, October 2026). Each action tags the ticket "shopify_refund" or "shopify_cancelled", so refunds can be reported on.

Gorgias's sidebar also edits an order and its shipping address, duplicates it, and creates new and draft orders (Gorgias Help Center, October 2026). Editing stops at orders older than 60 days and at orders in a currency other than the store's, which matters for brands selling through Shopify Markets.

That gap is where a store-shaped queue saves handle time, because an address change or a replacement order stays in one screen. Shopify merchants' ratings point the same way: Gorgias's app holds 4.3 stars from 705 reviews and Zendesk's 3.2 from 94 (Gorgias listing, Zendesk listing, October 2026). The refund limits on Gorgias's side are in the Gorgias and Freshdesk refund comparison. Intercom's inbox now does much of the same order work, as the Gorgias versus Intercom answer shows.

When does Zendesk become the right helpdesk?

Zendesk becomes the right helpdesk when the queue stops being shaped like a store. Deploi's Gorgias vs. Zendesk record gives Zendesk multi-brand routing, business-to-business (B2B) contracts and contractual service levels (October 2026). Its move signal is non-store tickets passing roughly a third of the queue.

The shape of the support queue points to Gorgias or to Zendesk
Your queueHelpdesk

Multi-brand routing, B2B contracts or contractual service levelsZendesk, whose routing and service-level tooling is its strength

Phone is the other common trigger. Once someone is rostered to answer calls, Zendesk's telephony and published call rates change the math.

When should you buy neither helpdesk yet?

Buy neither helpdesk while tickets run under roughly 500 a month, because Shopify's native tools still cover the queue. Deploi's Gorgias vs. Zendesk record scores that volume WAIT (October 2026). Deploi's native-stack record sets out the lane: a shared mailbox, self-service in Shopify customer accounts and Shopify Flow for tagging and alerts, with no new software (October 2026).

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

What we’ve seen
The teams that regret Gorgias are the ones that bought it for price and then grew a non-ecommerce queue around it. The teams that regret Zendesk bought it for the feature grid and staffed a direct-to-consumer queue against a per-seat license. Both regrets are the pricing-model mistake, arrived at from opposite directions.
Where we disagree
The category answers this with a feature comparison, and the feature comparison is close to irrelevant below enterprise scale. Both products will ticket, tag, route and report perfectly well. We would rather argue about whether your cost should track conversations or headcount, because that is the line item you will still be paying in three years.
What we refuse to quote
An all-in monthly figure without your ticket count and channel mix. In our experience two brands at the same revenue can differ several-fold on ticket volume, and the whole comparison pivots on that number.

When this answer changes

  • Gorgias changes its ticket tiers, its 500-seat allowance or its AI Agent rate.
  • Zendesk publishes a Suite Enterprise price on zendesk.com or moves telephony out of Suite Team.
  • Zendesk's Shopify app adds order editing, which would close Gorgias's widest gap.
  • Non-store tickets pass roughly a third of your queue, the Gorgias vs. Zendesk record's move signal.
  • Shopify ships native ticketing in the admin, which would reopen the case for buying neither.
