Customer Support & Helpdesk

Is Zendesk overkill for a Shopify Plus store, or does it earn its heavier setup once we need phone support?

Short answer

Zendesk is overkill for a Shopify Plus store until someone is rostered to the phone; only then does its setup pay. Suite Team includes telephony at $55 per agent a month billed annually, with calls metered at published rates (zendesk.com, Zendesk Help, October 2026). Gorgias bills Voice per call ticket at an unpublished rate, so it needs a quote (gorgias.com).

Deploi’s call

Zendesk is overkill for a Plus store right up until phone becomes a rostered job, and then it stops being overkill in a single step. The published-price gap is the cleanest evidence: Zendesk tells you what telephony costs before you talk to anyone, and Gorgias does not.

BuyMove phone support to Zendesk when

  • Someone is rostered to the phone and queue time or abandonment is reported.
  • You need interactive voice response (IVR) menus, callbacks or after-hours routing, which start on Suite Professional at $115 per agent a month, billed annually (Zendesk, October 2026).
  • You want call costs priced before a sales call: Zendesk publishes $0.016 a minute for inbound US calls answered in the browser (Zendesk Help, October 2026).
  • Multi-brand or business-to-business (B2B) tickets pass roughly a third of the queue, the Zendesk trigger in Deploi's Gorgias vs. Zendesk record (October 2026).

WaitKeep phone in your current helpdesk while

  • Nobody is rostered to the phone and voicemail feeds the ticket queue.
  • Phone is seasonal, so telephony setup would outlast the calls.
  • Order-status calls make up most of the volume, because self-service removes those first.
  • Another migration is under way.

Does Zendesk's telephony come with the plan or cost extra?

Zendesk's telephony comes with every Suite plan, and the calls themselves cost extra. Suite Team includes phone support with "toll-free and international numbers, voicemail, extensions, and more" at $55 per agent a month, billed annually (Zendesk, October 2026). Calls, numbers and recordings then bill as usage, at rates Zendesk publishes (Zendesk Help, October 2026). That is the phone exception to the Gorgias versus Zendesk decision for a Plus store.

A phone agent on Zendesk costs a seat plus metered calls and numbers
LinePrice, USD
Suite Team seat, telephony included$55 per agent a month billed annually, $69 monthly
Suite Professional seat, adds phone menus and callbacks$115 per agent a month billed annually, $149 monthly
US phone number$1 a month local, $2 toll-free
Inbound US call answered in the browser$0.016 a minute
Call recording$0.003 a minute
Voicemail$0.013 a minute

Every agent who takes or makes calls needs a seat, and hold time is billed as minutes (Zendesk Help, October 2026). So an agent on inbound calls four hours a day for 21 days logs about 5,040 minutes, roughly $81 at the browser rate (Deploi arithmetic from Zendesk's published rates).

How does Gorgias price phone support?

Gorgias prices phone support per Voice ticket, at a rate it doesn't publish. A Voice ticket is any ticket with at least one call, billed once however many calls it holds, and a voicemail counts (Gorgias Help Center, October 2026). Gorgias says the cost per Voice ticket "depends on your subscription tier" and shows it on the account's billing page. Its pricing page says only that Voice pricing "scales with your call and text volume" (Gorgias, October 2026).

So a Gorgias voice budget starts with a sales conversation, and a Zendesk one doesn't. Voice tickets above the add-on's usage limit bill as overage, at a cost that also depends on the plan (Gorgias Help Center, October 2026). Ask Gorgias for both rates in writing.

When does phone support turn Zendesk from overkill into the right tool?

Phone support turns Zendesk into the right tool when the phone becomes a staffed job, not when calls pass a count. A store taking 40 calls a month, answered by whoever is nearest, has crossed nothing. A store with one person rostered to the phone has crossed it at any volume, because queue time, abandonment and after-hours routing now need managing.

Where is Zendesk genuinely overkill for a Shopify Plus store?

Zendesk is genuinely overkill for a Plus store whose support surface is the store. A horizontal service platform asks you to model your organization before it routes a ticket, and a five-person ecommerce support team has no organization to model. Every hour spent on business rules for a hierarchy you don't have is an hour not spent writing macros.

Per-seat pricing also punishes the staffing ecommerce runs on, because every Zendesk agent who takes or makes calls needs a seat (Zendesk Help, October 2026). Seasonal phone cover in the fourth quarter adds seats on Zendesk, while Gorgias's helpdesk is "never priced per agent" (Gorgias, October 2026).

When should a Plus store not switch helpdesks for phone?

Don't switch helpdesks for phone when the phone need is temporary or a symptom, because the switch costs more than the calls. Deploi's Gorgias vs. Zendesk record reserves Zendesk for queues that outgrow the store (October 2026).

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

What we’ve seen
Teams that add phone almost never add it deliberately. It arrives because one channel partner, one high-order-value product line or one compliance requirement needs a human voice, and then it never leaves. The stores that handled it well decided in advance what phone was for, rather than discovering they had a call center.
Where we disagree
The standard advice is to pick the helpdesk that covers every channel you might ever need. We think that is how a five-person team ends up administering an enterprise service platform. Buy for the queue you have, and accept that the switch, when it comes, is a real project rather than pretending you can pre-empt it for free.
What this page adds
The parent compares Gorgias and Zendesk on billing units. This answer prices phone itself: Zendesk's telephony comes in Suite Team at $55 per agent a month billed annually with calls metered at published rates, interactive voice response (IVR) menus and callbacks need Suite Professional, and Gorgias bills Voice per call ticket at a rate it does not publish. The trigger is a rostered agent, not a call count.

When this answer changes

  • Gorgias publishes a price per Voice ticket or opens the Voice add-on to Starter.
  • Zendesk changes its per-minute call rates or moves telephony out of Suite Team.
  • Zendesk moves interactive voice response (IVR) menus and callbacks down to Suite Team.
  • Someone on your team is rostered to answer the phone.
  • Phone becomes the main channel for a product line or a wholesale account.
