If we're already selling DTC on Plus with 9 expansion stores available, should one of those become a dedicated B2B store?

A free expansion store slot earns a dedicated B2B build only when wholesale needs its own experience, inventory or staff. Shopify pre-approves one free B2B wholesale expansion store per Plus contract, requiring "identical products as the main brand" (Shopify Help Center, September 2026). The slot costs nothing; the apps, theme license and second operation do.

The slot is free, and "free slot" is the wrong reason

Shopify's pre-approved expansion store types include "B2B wholesale stores: Identical products as the main brand, requires user login and B2B organization association. Limit of one free B2B store per contract" (per Shopify Help Center, September 2026). So yes, the entitlement exists, it is specifically for this, and nobody has to negotiate it.

The trap is treating an unused entitlement as a reason to use it. The plan fee is the only cost the slot covers. Everything else about a second store is priced per store and recurs forever.

Read the pre-approval condition carefully before assuming you qualify

Two clauses in that sentence do work that catches people.

"Identical products as the main brand." The pre-approval contemplates a wholesale storefront selling the same assortment as the DTC brand. A wholesale operation with a materially different assortment, its own SKUs, its own packs, or a private-label line, is not obviously inside the pre-approved description. Confirm with Shopify before you build rather than after, because the alternative store types on the same list are approved case by case.

"Requires user login and B2B organization association." The store is expected to be gated. That is usually what you wanted, and it has one consequence worth writing into the plan: a gated store is outside Shopify Catalog, so it has no agentic-channel exposure. Shopify excludes B2B-only products from Catalog syndication automatically when it identifies them through B2B catalogs, authentication requirements or a password-protected storefront, and lists "Agentic storefronts" as not compatible with B2B (per Shopify Help Center, September 2026).

What the free slot does not make free

LineWhat Shopify says
Apps"Apps are billed on a per-store basis rather than for the entire organization"
Theme"Theme licenses are required for each individual store, and a license can't be shared across stores"
Products and inventory"Store settings, products, collections, and inventory aren't synced between stores. They don't share data by default"
What is sharedUser management and billing, centrally, across all stores

All per Shopify Help Center, September 2026.

Run your own app list against that first row before anything else. A mid-market stack with reviews, search, subscriptions, ERP middleware, a helpdesk, a loyalty app and a tax engine does not cost the same twice as it costs once in convenience terms either, because each one is a second configuration to keep in step with the first.

The condition test, applied to a Plus merchant specifically

Shopify's four dedicated-store conditions are the right test and one of them reads differently for a brand already on Plus. "Need distinct inventory for B2B and D2C operations" is a genuine architectural need for some wholesalers and a trap for others, because stores do not share inventory by default. A brand whose wholesale allocation is a reservation against shared stock wants blended with allocation logic, not two inventory surfaces that have to be reconciled by an integration somebody has to own.

The condition that most reliably justifies the build in this band is "have different staff managing your B2B and D2C operations." Separate teams are the thing a second admin genuinely serves, because permissions, notifications and reporting all stop colliding at once.

The sequence we insist on

  1. Set up B2B in the existing store first, even if you are confident you will split. Companies, locations, catalogs and terms all work on the blended store today, and building there surfaces your real requirements against live data rather than against a whiteboard.
  2. Run one full wholesale season blended. The requirements you write after one season are different from the ones you write before, and the difference is the part that would have been built wrong.
  3. Then split, if two or more of Shopify's four conditions are still true. By this point the catalogs, companies and terms are all configured and portable as requirements rather than as guesses.
  4. Never split in the same quarter as a replatform or an ERP change. When a number goes wrong afterwards, nobody can say which project caused it.

When NOT to use the slot

  • When you might want it for a market. The same nine slots serve international expansion. One free B2B store per contract is a separate entitlement, but the slot count is shared, so an aggressive market roadmap competes with this.
  • When the goal is a different look for wholesale buyers. Contextual storefront and contextual checkout are available on Plus and on Advanced (per Shopify plan-features table, September 2026).
  • When nobody has volunteered to own the second admin. An unowned store is a security surface and a stale theme.
  • When your wholesale assortment differs from the main brand. Check the pre-approval first.

The Deploi point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.

  • Our take: Use the slot when two or more of Shopify's four dedicated-store conditions are true, and not because the slot is sitting there. The free entitlement removes the plan fee from the decision and changes nothing about the recurring cost, which is per-store apps, a second theme license and a second operation.
  • What we tell clients to do first: build B2B in the existing store and run one wholesale season on it. Nearly every requirement anyone writes before that season is wrong in at least one expensive way, and the blended build is not wasted work because the companies, catalogs and terms are portable.
  • Where we disagree: Plus merchants are routinely advised to "use your expansion stores, you're paying for them anyway." That is sunk-cost reasoning applied to a line item that is not actually the cost. The cost is two of everything else, forever, and it does not appear on the Shopify invoice.
  • What this page adds: that the free B2B expansion store is a named, pre-approved store type with a stated condition of "identical products as the main brand," that the entitlement is one per contract rather than one per brand, and that a gated B2B store has no agentic-channel exposure by design.
