What Lightspeed hardware (terminals, receipt printers, cash drawers) is reusable with Shopify POS, and what needs replacing?
Short answer
Lightspeed receipt printers and barcode scanners mostly carry over to Shopify point of sale (POS), cash drawers need a pilot-store test, and card readers never carry over. Shopify's readers need Shopify Payments (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so every Lightspeed reader is replaced. Both vendors list the Star mC-Print3, mPOP and TSP143IV (Shopify Help Center, Lightspeed R-Series support, October 2026).

Deploi’s call
Assume printers, scanners and drawers carry over and prove it in one store; assume card readers do not and buy them. That split is where the real budget is, and it is knowable in an afternoon from two published lists rather than from a vendor conversation.
BuyBuy new before the cutover
- Every card reader, because Shopify's readers need Shopify Payments (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Any iPad that cannot run iOS 18 by June 6, 2027 (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- A spare printer, reader and iPad for the pilot store.
CustomizeKeep and test in the pilot store
- Receipt printers Shopify names, such as the Star TSP143IV or the Star mC-Print3 (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Barcode scanners that work as Human Interface Device (HID) keyboards (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Printer-driven cash drawers, with budget held for any that fail.

Which Lightspeed hardware is on Shopify POS's supported lists?
Most Lightspeed receipt printers and barcode scanners appear on Shopify point of sale (POS) supported lists, and no Lightspeed card reader carries over. Shopify's own Lightspeed guide says only that "some of your hardware might be compatible" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). The comparison merges Lightspeed's R-Series and X-Series lists (Lightspeed R-Series support, Lightspeed X-Series support, October 2026), so it works as the budget sheet for the hardware step of a Lightspeed cutover.
| Hardware | On Shopify's and Lightspeed's lists | On Lightspeed's lists only | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Receipt printers | Star mPOP, mC-Print3, TSP100III (Shopify names its TSP143III models) and TSP143IV; Epson TM-m30II, TM-m30III and T88 series | Star TSP100; Epson TM-m30 and TM-m10 | Test, then keep. Check each Star label: Shopify names TSP143III and TSP143IV models, not the original TSP100 |
| Barcode scanners | Zebra DS2208 and DS2278; Socket Mobile | Honeywell Voyager; Zebra CS4070 and CS6080 | Keep. Shopify accepts any Human Interface Device (HID) scanner |
| Cash drawers | Star CD4 series | APG Cash Drawer Vasario series; Star CD3; Minota | Keep, and test each unlisted drawer |
| Card readers | WisePad 3 and Chipper 2X BT, as model names only | Smart Terminal; Mobile Tap v2 | Replace, always |
Do unlisted cash drawers such as APG's Vasario work with Shopify POS?
In our judgment, unlisted printer-driven cash drawers usually open with Shopify point of sale (POS), because the receipt printer opens them, so test each one in the pilot store. Shopify's North American list names only the Star Micronics CD4-1416 and CD4-1616 (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). APG Cash Drawer's Vasario range, which Lightspeed R-Series supports, is not on it (Lightspeed R-Series support, October 2026).
Both vendors wire a drawer through the receipt printer. Shopify says "Most cash drawers need to connect to a compatible receipt printer" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). The larger end of the drawer cable goes in the drawer and the smaller end in the printer. Lightspeed's own drawer guide gives the same instruction (Lightspeed R-Series support, October 2026).
Not on Shopify's list is not the same as does not work, and it is also not the same as supported. Lightspeed draws the same line for its own list: "Lightspeed only provides support for the hardware listed in this article" (Lightspeed R-Series support, October 2026). Hold budget for replacements rather than assuming either outcome.
Can a Lightspeed card reader be reused with Shopify POS?
No Lightspeed card reader can be reused with Shopify point of sale (POS), because Shopify's readers run only on Shopify Payments. Shopify says "To use a Shopify-supported card reader, you need to use Shopify Payments" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Lightspeed lists each of its readers against a processor and ties its WisePad 3 to Lightspeed Payments (Lightspeed R-Series support, October 2026).
The WisePad 3 causes the most confusion. The same model sits on Lightspeed's list, on Shopify's list and on Wix's list (Wix Help Center, October 2026), a trap the Wix POS version of this question also flags. A shared model number does not make a unit transferable. Shopify sells its own WisePad 3 through the Shopify Hardware Store (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), and in North America only in Canada. US merchants choose between the Tap & Chip Reader, the POS Terminal and the Verifone Victa Mobile (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
What does Shopify's external card terminal option give up?
Shopify's external card terminal option gives up integration: the payment runs outside Shopify point of sale (POS), so staff mark each order as paid by hand. Shopify sets three steps for an external terminal (Shopify Help Center, October 2026):
- Set up an account with a payment processor.
- Buy or rent a terminal from that processor.
- Create a custom payment type in the Shopify POS app.
At the till, the cashier rings the sale in Shopify POS, takes the card on the terminal, then taps Mark as paid. Shopify shows the payment status but "doesn't provide any transaction details" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so settlement no longer reconciles itself.
An external terminal suits a retailer that must keep another payment processor for now, because Shopify's own readers need Shopify Payments. Give it an end date, because every sale on it is marked paid and reconciled by hand.
What hardware costs do Lightspeed migration budgets miss?
Lightspeed migration budgets miss two lines: a spare kit for the pilot store, and iPads that will not reach Shopify's 2027 operating system floor. The pilot store needs a second of everything: printer, reader, iPad and tested paper stock. Our store-opening playbook record warns that a new store's first customers tell people about "a card reader that will not pair" (checked October 2026). A spare kit costs less than a paused rollout.
Shopify point of sale (POS) runs on iPadOS 15.1 or higher today. In 2027, "iPads and iPhones must run on iOS 18 or higher" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Devices on an older system "must be updated by June 6, 2027". Check each iPad against that date before you count it as kept.
The reader line can shrink. Retailers new to POS Pro who choose a yearly subscription get a Verifone Victa Mobile reader for a $10 activation fee per location (Shopify, October 2026). Only locations subscribed within 7 days of the first Pro location qualify, so plan which stores to subscribe in that week. Retailers new to POS Pro pay $67 a month per location on that yearly offer, 25% off the $89 a month billed yearly on Shopify's POS pricing page (Shopify, October 2026).
When should you replace Lightspeed hardware instead of reusing it?
Replace Lightspeed hardware instead of reusing it when a failure would stop a busy store, when a store has one register, or when an iPad cannot reach iOS 18:
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- POS vendors market hardware compatibility as a switching-cost story, and migration agencies quote a full hardware refresh because it is easier to scope than a compatibility matrix. Both overstate the replacement cost. The honest answer for most Lightspeed estates is one line item, repeated per register, for the reader, plus any iPad that cannot reach iOS 18 by June 2027.
- What we tell clients to check first
- The reader model, and then who provisioned it. The WisePad 3 appears on Lightspeed's list, Wix's list and Shopify's list, so a merchant comparing websites sees the same device three times and concludes it carries over. It does not, because a terminal belongs to a processor rather than to a model number.
- What this page adds
- The model-by-model overlap between Shopify's and Lightspeed's published hardware lists, that Shopify accepts any Human Interface Device scanner, that APG drawers are printer-driven but unlisted, that the WisePad 3 appears on both lists while being non-transferable, and that Shopify POS requires iOS 18 by June 6, 2027.
Decision records behind this answer
When this answer changes
- Shopify adds or drops printers, scanners or cash drawers on its supported lists, or Lightspeed changes its R-Series or X-Series hardware lists.
- Shopify moves its 2027 operating system rule: iOS 18 or higher for iPads, with older devices updated by June 6, 2027.
- Shopify ends or changes the POS Pro yearly offer of a Verifone Victa Mobile per location for a $10 activation fee.
- Shopify changes the $89 or $67 monthly POS Pro price per location, or starts selling the WisePad 3 in the US.
- Shopify lets its card readers run with a payment provider other than Shopify Payments.

- How does Wix's built-in POS (if used in a retail location) migrate to Shopify POS, and does the hardware carry over?
Wix's point of sale (POS) hardware mostly carries over to Shopify POS, because Shopify's printer and scanner lists name the Epson, Zebra and Socket models Wix sells (Shopify Help Center, Shopify Help Center, Wix, October 2026).
