How do I migrate from Lightspeed Retail (POS) to Shopify without disrupting in-store sales during the transition?
Short answer
A Lightspeed Retail to Shopify migration keeps stores selling when registers move only after catalog and inventory are live, one store at a time, because the risk is two systems counting the same stock. Shopify's Store Migration app imports only products and customers, not gift cards, loyalty balances or orders, and its Lightspeed path is in early access for certain stores (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Store Migration app scope
- Products and customers onlyNo orders, collections, navigation, pages or reviews. Prices land at each product's highest price, and inventory does not import by location.Sources: Shopify Help Center (Migrate from Lightspeed); Shopify blog (Store Migration Shopify App: Import Data (2026))
- Lightspeed path in the app
- Early access, certain stores, desktop onlyPer Shopify's Help Center, October 2026. The App Store listing still names Lightspeed R/X (Vend) as a source with no caveat.Sources: Shopify Help Center (Migrate from Lightspeed); Shopify App Store (Shopify Store Migration)
- X-Series export ceilings
- 1,000 customers; 1,000 or 10,000 salesPer standard export. Lightspeed documents a link edit that has exported 15,000 customers at once, and two of its articles disagree on the sales ceiling.Sources: Lightspeed X-Series support (How to export customers without the 1000 customer limit, Adjusting customer loyalty balances, Exporting your Sales Data from Retail POS (X-Series), Understanding and managing the Sales history page)
- Shopify location limit
- 10 on Basic to Advanced, 200 on PlusPOS Pro adds $89 a month per location, billed yearly. Plus covers it on 20 locations, or up to 200 when Shopify Payments is the main provider for retail locations (October 2026).Sources: Shopify Help Center (Setting up and managing locations, Shopify Plus plan); Shopify (POS System Pricing)
Deploi’s call
Catalog and inventory first, registers last, one store at a time: that sequence keeps a Lightspeed cutover from disrupting store sales, because the risky part is not the register. It is keeping one inventory record true across store and online during the overlap. On Shopify point of sale (POS), the store and the website share one catalog and one inventory record, so there is no sync to build. That is why our Shopify POS vs. Lightspeed Retail record says buy Shopify POS, and our record on keeping POS and ecommerce data in step says wait rather than buy or build a sync (Deploi verdicts, August and September 2026).
BuyMove the registers to Shopify POS when
- Shopify will hold products, inventory and customers for stores and website alike.
- Floor staff could retrain in a season, the test our POS vendor decision record sets for retailers on Lightspeed.
- You know your Lightspeed row counts and finance can state the gift card liability.
CustomizeKeep Lightspeed on the floor while
- Lightspeed-dependent workflows run across many stores and cost more to retrain than a sync costs to keep.
- A Lightspeed contract or hardware lease outlasts the next slow season.
- The website is the urgent project; Lightspeed stays the system of record until stores move.

What can each Lightspeed Retail series export?
Both Lightspeed Retail series export customers as comma-separated values (CSV) files, and gift card codes with their balances. They differ on sales history and loyalty, so name your series first: "The product data export procedure depends on which Lightspeed series you use" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
| Object | Lightspeed Retail X-Series | Lightspeed Retail R-Series |
|---|---|---|
| Customers | 1,000 per standard export; a documented link edit has pulled 15,000 | CSV from Customers > Customers |
| Sales history | 1,000 or 10,000 per file, by Lightspeed article | Shopify's guide points to third-party apps |
| Gift card balances | Codes and balances from Reporting > Gift card reports | Codes and balances from Customers > Gift cards, with the Export Gift Card Data permission |
| Loyalty balances | loyalty_balance column in the customer file | Lightspeed Loyalty's Export All Customers file; columns undocumented |
Row counts, not store counts, size the export work. Lightspeed's own articles disagree on sales. One says the export "is limited to 1000 sales" (Lightspeed, October 2026). The Sales history guide, updated 5 October 2026, offers "your last 10,000 sales" (Lightspeed). For 40,000 customers and 300,000 archived sales, that is 3 to 40 customer exports and 30 to 300 sales exports (Deploi arithmetic). Test both ceilings first.
What does Shopify's Store Migration app move from Lightspeed?
Shopify's free Store Migration app moves products and customers from Lightspeed Retail X-Series and R-Series (Shopify App Store, October 2026). It moves nothing that carries a balance. It skips orders, collections, menus, pages and reviews (Shopify blog, July 2026). Shopify calls it "best suited for smaller brands" and points multistore retailers to another migration path. Three documented limits bite in retail:
- Shopify notes that "products with more than 3 options won't have their options imported" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Apparel with size, colour, width and fit is a four-option product.
- Prices by location "aren't supported", so each product lands at "the product's highest price" (Shopify Help Center). Outlet pricing at one store becomes full price everywhere.
- The app "doesn't import inventory by location" (Shopify blog), so a multi-store count needs its own file.
In what order should a Lightspeed cutover run?
A Lightspeed cutover runs from the data that changes least to the registers that change most:
- Locations and plan. Shopify allows 10 inventory locations on Basic, Grow and Advanced and 200 on Plus (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A retailer with 14 stores on Advanced faces a plan decision first. Our store-opening playbook record draws that line at store eleven.
- Catalog, imported into a store nobody sells from yet. Fix by hand what the Store Migration app drops: the options of any product with more than three, and prices by location (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Inventory counts per location, through Shopify's inventory file: one row per variant per location, 15 megabytes at most (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Customers, accepting what customer history does not survive the move.
- Balances: gift cards, then store credit, then loyalty. None of them moves with the app, and Shopify's admin cannot import gift cards from a file (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). See moving gift card balances intact and where loyalty balances should land.
- Tax settings, rebuilt rather than migrated, because the app does not import them (Shopify blog, July 2026).
- Hardware, tested in one store out of hours against Shopify's supported hardware list (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). See which Lightspeed hardware carries over.
- Registers last, one store at a time, piloting in a busy store that takes many payment types, not the quietest. Brief its cashiers on cash rounding.
Why do the registers move last?
Registers move last because the real disruption is the week when the stockroom, website and register counts disagree and nobody can say which is right. A two-minute pause at the till is not the risk.
The count risk is created by the overlap period, not by the cutover moment. The cutover moment is the safest part of the project, because everyone is watching. The dangerous window is the weeks before it, when the catalog is loading into Shopify while Lightspeed is still selling. Whether to run Lightspeed and Shopify side by side decides how long that window stays open. The register itself is a commodity you buy. On Shopify point of sale (POS), one inventory record comes with it, so there is no sync to maintain. Our POS vendor decision record scores Shopify POS BUY against Lightspeed Retail, and our record on keeping POS and ecommerce data in step says wait rather than buy or build a sync (both checked October 2026).
What does the rollback plan need before the first store moves?
The rollback plan needs Lightspeed kept live and read-only through one month-end close, a full export on cutover night and a numeric abort rule, all agreed before the pilot store moves. A Shopify point of sale (POS) cutover is not easily reversed, because transactions written after cutover exist only in Shopify. So the rollback is not "go back to Lightspeed." It is three commitments:
- Keep the Lightspeed subscription live and read-only through one full month-end close. Cancelling on cutover day saves one month of subscription and costs you the only copy of the data your accountant will ask for in week three.
- Take a final full export of every object on cutover night, not the week before, and store it somewhere that is not a POS vendor.
- Define the abort condition in advance and in numbers. Ours: if register-level cash variance exceeds the pre-migration baseline for three consecutive trading days at the pilot store, the rollout stops and the remaining stores stay on Lightspeed. Ask any agency leading the work for its own; it is one of six questions that screen a migration agency.
When should you not start a Lightspeed migration?
Do not start a Lightspeed cutover inside 10 weeks of your peak, midway through a catalog restructure, before finance owns the gift card liability, or when order history must come across:
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- The category answers this question with a tool recommendation, because a tool is a thing you can link to. The tool is the easy half. Shopify's own free app moves products and customers, lists orders among what it does not import, and offers no path for gift cards or loyalty balances, which means the hard half of this project is the half Shopify's tool leaves to you.
- What we tell clients to check first
- The row counts, before the store count. Lightspeed X-Series stops a standard customer export at 1,000 rows, and its own articles put the sales export ceiling at 1,000 or 10,000. Those ceilings turn a data export into a paginated, date-filtered, reconciled task whose size is set by your data volume rather than your number of stores. Get both counts in week one or the plan is an estimate of something else.
- What our POS store-opening playbook record doesn't cover
- That record scopes the repeatable process for opening store number six. This page covers the one-time event of moving stores one through five off another vendor, which has a rollback requirement a new-store playbook never needs.
Decision records behind this answer
When this answer changes
- Shopify takes the Store Migration app's Lightspeed path out of early access, or adds orders, gift cards or inventory by location to what it imports.
- Lightspeed settles its X-Series sales export ceiling at 1,000 or 10,000, or changes the 1,000-row standard customer export.
- Shopify changes the 10 and 200 location limits, the $89 POS Pro price per location, or the POS Pro locations Plus covers (20, or up to 200 with Shopify Payments).
- Shopify's admin gains a gift card import, which would retire the developer-or-app route for balances.
- Deploi's Shopify POS vs. Lightspeed Retail decision record changes its BUY verdict.
Follow-up questions
What's inside the number
- How do I migrate gift card balances from Lightspeed Retail to Shopify without customers losing value?
Lightspeed gift card balances reach Shopify in bulk only through the Admin application programming interface (API) or an app using it.
- What Lightspeed hardware (terminals, receipt printers, cash drawers) is reusable with Shopify POS, and what needs replacing?
Lightspeed receipt printers and barcode scanners mostly carry over to Shopify point of sale (POS), cash drawers need a pilot-store test, and card readers never carry over.
How it compares
- Should we run Lightspeed and Shopify POS side by side while building out the new ecommerce store, or migrate everything in one cutover?
A Lightspeed and Shopify parallel run is safe for catalog and inventory, never for registers, because two registers on one stock pool produce two counts.
If you're not the typical case
- How does Wix's built-in POS (if used in a retail location) migrate to Shopify POS, and does the hardware carry over?
Wix's point of sale (POS) hardware mostly carries over to Shopify POS, because Shopify's printer and scanner lists name the Epson, Zebra and Socket models Wix sells (Shopify Help Center, Shopify Help Center, Wix, October 2026).
What changes afterwards
- Does customer purchase history and loyalty-points balance transfer from Lightspeed Retail to Shopify, or does that data get lost?
Purchase history does not transfer with Lightspeed Retail customers to Shopify.
- Does migrating from Lightspeed to Shopify change how we handle price rounding and cash transactions in physical stores?
Yes, because Shopify's point of sale sets cash rounding by country rule, not by your Lightspeed payment settings (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
What to do next
- What questions should we ask before hiring an agency to lead a Lightspeed-to-Shopify migration for a multi-location retail brand?
Six questions separate an agency that has run a multi-location point of sale (POS) cutover from one that has not: your Lightspeed series, gift card liability, loyalty balances, tax registrations, register-day rollback and first month-end close.
- What's the migration path for Lightspeed's built-in customer loyalty program if Shopify has no native loyalty equivalent?
Lightspeed X-Series loyalty is a dollar balance, not points, so its closest Shopify home is native store credit (Lightspeed X-Series support, October 2026).
