Lightspeed

Does migrating from Lightspeed to Shopify change how we handle price rounding and cash transactions in physical stores?

Short answer

Yes, because Shopify's point of sale sets cash rounding by country rule, not by your Lightspeed payment settings (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Shopify rounds only cash payments and refunds. It rounds them automatically in nine countries, including Canada to $0.05 CAD. The US is not one of them, though 16 states had penny rounding laws in effect by 10 August 2026 (Holland & Knight, August 2026).

Deploi’s call

Yes: a Lightspeed to Shopify migration changes who decides cash rounding, and the change costs more in trust than in money. The money at stake is a few dollars a day. The cost is a store manager who finds an unexplained variance in week one and stops trusting every other number the new system produces. That mistrust is expensive to rebuild.

CustomizeConfigure Shopify's rounding before go-live when

  • You round cash for US stores in Lightspeed today, because Shopify applies no US rule on its own (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • Your stores trade in one of Shopify's nine automatic countries with Lightspeed rounding switched off, so totals change on day one.
  • Your accounting integration mapped a Lightspeed cash rounding expense account, which nothing feeds after cutover.
  • Your Lightspeed rule differs from Shopify's default. That costs configuration time, not software, which is where our record on keeping point of sale (POS) and ecommerce data in step puts the spend.

WaitLeave Shopify's default alone for a fortnight while

  • The pilot store is in its first weeks on Shopify POS, so a second change would blur the cash variance.
  • Customers pay the same either way, as Canadian stores already rounding to the nearest $0.05 will find (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

How do Lightspeed and Shopify POS handle cash rounding differently?

Lightspeed and Shopify point of sale (POS) make opposite default choices on cash rounding in the nine countries where Shopify rounds automatically for every store, Canada among them. Lightspeed X-Series rounds nothing until you enable rounding on a cash payment type (Lightspeed, October 2026). Shopify POS rounds cash in those countries by default, using "the Swedish rounding method to round to the nearest denomination" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So rounding is the clearest setting in a Lightspeed to Shopify POS cutover that does not migrate, yet changes the till on day one.

Which stores see a change at the till?

Stores see a change at the till wherever the Shopify point of sale (POS) rule for their country differs from what Lightspeed did:

  • US stores. The US is not on Shopify's automatic lists (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). By 10 August 2026, 16 states had penny rounding laws in effect, and Missouri's followed on 28 August (Holland & Knight, August 2026). Congress then passed the federal Common Cents Act, a cash rounding framework, on 28 September 2026 (Retail Dive, September 2026). If you round cash in Lightspeed today, set a US rule before go-live, because Shopify lets you "manually configure cash rounding rules for each country" but applies no US rule itself. State rules differ: Vermont requires businesses that round to post a notice (Vermont Department of Taxes, July 2026).
  • Canadian stores. Stores already rounding to the nearest $0.05 in Lightspeed see the same totals. What changes is who decides: Shopify's country rule, not a tender setting.
  • Stores in the nine automatic countries with Lightspeed rounding off. Cash totals change on day one, and cashiers notice before finance does.
  • New Shopify stores. Since 26 July 2026, 16 more country rules apply to stores created on or after 6 July 2026 and to a first retail location set up in a listed country since then (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Existing retail locations with rounding off stay off.

Where does the rounding difference land in the books after cutover?

After cutover, the rounding difference lands in Shopify's order records and payment finance reports, not in the account your Lightspeed integration fed. In those reports, you add the "Cash rounding" and "Rounded net payment" columns to see it (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Lightspeed makes rounding an explicit line: "you must map the correct Xero expense account to cash rounding expense" (Lightspeed, October 2026), and the amounts reach Xero when you close the register (Lightspeed, October 2026). That mapping has nowhere to land once Lightspeed stops selling. Shopify's reports can blur the difference too: Bookkeep, an accounting app, has observed that Shopify's Finance Summary may show the pre-rounded cash total rather than the cash collected (Bookkeep, October 2026). The symptom is a few-dollars-a-day cash variance nobody can source, and it can trip a cutover abort rule built on register cash variance. So have your bookkeeper name the destination account before go-live, and check it on day three rather than at month-end.

Which other cash and tender settings should the pilot store test?

The pilot store should test store credit, cash discounting and the end-of-day cash check, because each works differently on Shopify point of sale (POS):

  • Store credit as a tender. Shopify store credit "can't be active as a payment method on Shopify POS without it also being active on your online store", and "Customers can't select a partial amount of their store credit to pay for an order" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So a retailer that wanted in-store-only credit, or part payments from a balance, has a decision to make. If store credit will hold migrated loyalty dollars, where Lightspeed loyalty balances should land weighs both rules.
  • Cash discounting. Lightspeed X-Series offers US merchants a service fee waived for cash (Lightspeed, October 2026) and, in beta, a cash payment discount with Lightspeed Payments (Lightspeed, October 2026). Confirm how you will reproduce it before cutover.
  • The end-of-day check. Lightspeed shows rounding on its register closure report (Lightspeed, October 2026). In Shopify POS, the "Cash tracking and the Session reports summarize payment activity" for each register session (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Tell store managers which report replaces the old one.

When should you leave Shopify's rounding default alone?

Leave Shopify's rounding default alone during cutover week, when only habit argues for a change, and until store managers have been told:

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

Where we disagree
Migration checklists file rounding under configuration. It belongs under change management. The configuration takes ten minutes; briefing the people at the till is the actual task.
What we tell clients to do first
Name the destination account for rounding differences before go-live, and check it on day three rather than at month-end. The mapping that pointed at a Lightspeed-specific cash-rounding expense account has nowhere to land after cutover, and an unowned few-dollars-a-day variance is small enough to ignore for a month and expensive enough to consume a week.
What this page adds
that Shopify sets cash rounding by country (automatically in nine countries, and since 26 July 2026 under 16 more rules for new stores) while Lightspeed rounds only the cash payment types you set, that US stores get no automatic rule even where state penny rounding laws apply, and that the recurring cash variance after cutover is usually an unmapped rounding-expense account rather than a till error.

When this answer changes

  • Shopify adds the United States to its automatic cash rounding lists, or changes the nine countries or their denominations.
  • The President signs the federal Common Cents Act, which Congress passed on 28 September 2026, or more states enact penny rounding laws.
  • Shopify extends its July 2026 rounding rules for new stores to existing retail locations.
  • Shopify allows part of a store credit balance to be used, or store credit on Shopify POS without the online store.
  • Lightspeed changes its X-Series rounding default or its Xero cash rounding mapping.
