Managed Markets & Merchant of Record
What's the actual merchant satisfaction/complaint rate with Managed Markets compared to running Markets DIY?
No published figure exists. Here is the honest answer
Shopify's Managed Markets has no published merchant satisfaction or complaint rate, and neither does running Shopify Markets yourself. Managed Markets is a setting in the Shopify admin, not an App Store app, so it has no rating (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Global-e, its merchant of record, reports only "very positive initial merchant feedback" (Global-e investor relations, October 2026).

Deploi’s call
No honest merchant satisfaction or complaint rate exists for Managed Markets, Shopify's merchant-of-record service, and we won't manufacture one. Shopify, Global-e and every independent source we could check in October 2026 publish no satisfaction, complaint or churn figure, and no customer satisfaction (CSAT) score, for it.
WaitStay on Managed Markets, and test its support, when
- International sales are under roughly $2M a year, or spread across many countries. Deploi's cross-border stack record scores that WAIT, the record's illustrative estimate (Deploi decision record, October 2026).
- A deliberate exception in your pilot, such as a return or a held parcel, resolves through Shopify Support within the time you wrote down.
- Your parcels are low value, so a customs hold costs time, not a large order; one UK merchant's order of around $3,500 sat in US customs in August 2026 (Shopify Community, October 2026).
CustomizeRun Shopify Markets yourself when
- Your team needs to deal with carriers and customs directly, because on Managed Markets requests about labels, returns and customs documents "go through Shopify Support, and not to Global-e directly" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- International sales pass roughly $2M a year in two to four markets, where the record scores your own stack CUSTOMIZE (Deploi decision record, October 2026).
- Returns run high, because duties, customs fees and value-added tax (VAT) aren't refunded once a Managed Markets order is fulfilled (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

Why is there no satisfaction or complaint rate for Managed Markets?
No satisfaction or complaint rate exists for Managed Markets, because no App Store rating exists and neither Shopify nor Global-e, its merchant of record, publishes one. Shopify's Managed Markets is activated "directly from the Markets page in your Shopify admin", so there is no listing to rate (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Self-run Shopify Markets has no rating either, because it is part of "the tools built into every store" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
Global-e's own CrossBorder app does have a listing, with 4.6 stars from under 10 reviews (Global-e CrossBorder listing, October 2026). Shopify calls that app "different from Managed Markets", so its reviews rate another product. Global-e's results for the second quarter of 2026 report gross merchandise value (GMV) and revenue. They say only that merchants moved to Managed Markets 2.0 gave "very positive initial merchant feedback" (Global-e investor relations, October 2026). So the fee case for Managed Markets under $5M of international sales has to stand without a satisfaction number.
What do merchants complain about in public, and what is it worth?
Merchants' public complaints center on two things: customs classification codes that Managed Markets assigns automatically, and a support chain through Shopify that they can't step around. The Shopify Community threads below are self-selected accounts, not a complaint rate. Managed Markets, Shopify's service with Global-e as merchant of record, was called Markets Pro until June 2024 (Shopify Changelog, October 2026).
| Thread | When | What merchants report | Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customs codes thread | March 2024 to March 2026 | Assigned codes misclassify products, add tariffs and block items in some countries | About 25 posts from 8 people |
| Markets Pro update post | July 2024 | Customs questions pass through DHL, Shopify's unnamed partner and Markets Pro, with delays of 8 days or more | 1 post |
| High-value order thread | August 2026 | An order of around $3,500 held in US customs; no direct route to Global-e, so the merchant called FedEx and later removed Managed Markets | 8 posts from 3 people |
Both failure modes are written into Shopify's own documentation, which is why they are worth more than their numbers. Shopify says assigned codes "might differ from the ones that you initially entered" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). It also says requests about labels, returns and customs documents "go through Shopify Support, and not to Global-e directly".
How do Managed Markets and self-run Markets fail differently?
Managed Markets and self-run Shopify Markets, the do-it-yourself (DIY) route, fail in different places. Managed Markets hands tax and customs work to Global-e, its merchant of record, but routes every exception through Shopify Support. Self-run Markets keeps the work and the exceptions with you, because you stay the merchant of record (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
| Exception | Managed Markets | Self-run Shopify Markets |
|---|---|---|
| Tax registration and filing abroad | Global-e registers and remits | Yours, in every country where you register |
| A held parcel | Requests go through Shopify Support | You call the carrier |
| Duties on a returned order | Not refunded once the order is fulfilled | Set by each destination's rules |
| Products a destination bans | Restricted by destination for you | Your call and your liability |
Deploi's cross-border stack record counts that support route as a hidden cost, because it "adds a hop on customs disputes" (Deploi decision record, October 2026). If the hop is the deal-breaker, Global-e's own app gives direct support (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Deploi's Global-e vs. Managed Markets record scores that direct route BUY only at enterprise cross-border scale (Deploi decision record, October 2026).
What can you measure instead of a satisfaction rate?
You can measure how Managed Markets handles your own exceptions, because that is what a satisfaction rate would have summarized. These five measures are Deploi's method, not a published benchmark.
- Ask for the escalation time in writing. One merchant reported Shopify Support saying there is "no published response time for a Managed Markets escalation" (Shopify Community, October 2026). If Shopify gives none, log that in your risk register.
- Run a deliberate exception in the pilot. Process a return on a fulfilled order, or ship a parcel above your usual value, and time it from ticket to resolution.
- Count Managed Markets tickets per hundred international orders. Track how many needed a second escalation.
- Track duty written off on returns, by destination. Managed Markets refunds no duties once an order is fulfilled (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Write the exit trigger down. You can end Managed Markets "at any time" from the Shopify admin, and you indemnify Global-e, the merchant of record, for shopper claims tied to the switch (Global-e, October 2026).
For delivery speed and tracking, compare a Managed Markets parcel with a locally fulfilled one. For conversion, run a pre/post test on a fixed list of destinations.
When should you stop looking for a satisfaction number?
Stop looking for a satisfaction number when someone offers you one or when your decision hangs on it, because neither Shopify nor Global-e, the merchant of record behind Managed Markets, publishes one.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- Comparison content routinely presents a satisfaction verdict on Managed Markets. There is no dataset behind it. We would rather publish the absence, name the public complaints at their true weight, and give a method for generating evidence about your own store.
- What we tell clients to do first
- Run the exception path in the pilot instead of waiting for it in peak: a held shipment, a return where the duty is gone, a product that stops being sellable to one country. All three are foreseeable from Shopify's documentation.
- What this page adds
- Why no rating exists (Managed Markets is a setting, not an app), that Global-e's own app and its reviews rate a different product, Global-e's only published line on merchant feedback, the public complaint threads and the two failure modes they share, and a failure-mode table against self-run Markets.
Decision records behind this answer
When this answer changes
- Shopify or Global-e publishes a satisfaction, churn or complaint figure for Managed Markets.
- Shopify publishes a response time for Managed Markets escalations, or lets merchants contact Global-e directly.
- Managed Markets gets an App Store listing or another public rating.
- Shopify changes how Managed Markets assigns customs codes, or its rule that duties aren't refunded on fulfilled orders.
Related questions
This follows from Is Managed Markets worth it for a brand doing under $5M in international sales, or is that too small to justify the fee?
- Is there a Managed Markets case study showing real before/after conversion-rate numbers for a mid-market brand?
No published case study of Managed Markets, Shopify's cross-border service, gives before-and-after conversion rates.
- What's the actual customer-experience difference (delivery speed, tracking clarity) between a Managed Markets shipment and a DIY-3PL-abroad shipment?
A Managed Markets parcel crosses a border and a third-party logistics (3PL) parcel from a warehouse abroad doesn't, so customs, not tracking, is the gap customers feel.
