Does Perplexity weight recency more heavily than ChatGPT does when deciding which product page to cite, and should that change how often we update content?
Short answer
Perplexity does not cite fresher pages than ChatGPT on the published evidence. In a study of 17 million pages cited by AI engines and Google, ChatGPT's citations averaged 958 days since publication against Perplexity's 1,166 (Ahrefs, July 2025). Neither company's crawler documentation names a recency weight (Perplexity's crawler page and OpenAI's, October 2026), so update pages when facts change.

Deploi’s call
Do not change your update cadence for Perplexity or ChatGPT. Refresh cadence is a data-hygiene question wearing an AI costume. The stores that win on freshness are the ones whose facts live in metafields and update once, everywhere.
WaitSkip an engine-specific refresh schedule while
- Neither Perplexity nor OpenAI names a recency weight or a recrawl interval in its crawler documentation (Perplexity and OpenAI docs, October 2026), so an engine-specific schedule targets nothing documented.
- A tool sells refresh frequency as an AI ranking lever. Deploi's AI answer engine visibility record holds paid tiers until your own prompt panel, a fixed set of buyer questions run in each engine, shows a gap (October 2026).
CustomizePut expiring facts on a schedule when
- Prices, stock, compatibility or policies change within a season. Date each claim on the page and update it the day the fact changes.
- Specs sit in rich-text fields with no owner. Move them into metafields, the attribute source of truth in Deploi's agentic commerce readiness record (October 2026).
- Your products reach ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot through Shopify Catalog, which Shopify says continuously updates inventory and pricing (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

Does Perplexity cite fresher pages than ChatGPT?
Perplexity does not cite fresher pages than ChatGPT in the largest study that compares them, and a smaller 2026 study agrees (Seer Interactive, July 2026). The larger study measured the age of 17 million pages cited by AI engines and Google (Ahrefs, July 2025). ChatGPT's citations were the newest, at 958 days since publication against Perplexity's 1,166. By last update, ChatGPT's citations and Perplexity's are level, at 989 and 993 days, and ChatGPT's in-text references are fresher still, at 865. So Perplexity shows no stronger pull toward fresh pages.
| Engine | Average days since publication | Average days since last update |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT citations | 958 | 989 |
| ChatGPT in-text references | 1,023 | 865 |
| Perplexity | 1,166 | 993 |
| Google organic results | 1,416 | 1,047 |
| Google AI Overviews, top three citations | 1,432 | 1,067 |
Ahrefs also found that Perplexity and ChatGPT list newer sources first within an answer, which it reads as "intentional age-related ordering". Our reading: recency shapes citation order more than selection, which fits why one product page serves ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.
What do Perplexity and ChatGPT document about how they fetch pages?
Perplexity and ChatGPT document the same two-part design: an index crawler for search results (PerplexityBot, OAI-SearchBot) and a fetcher that visits a page live when a user asks. Neither company's crawler documentation names a recrawl interval or a freshness signal (Perplexity and OpenAI crawler docs, October 2026).
| Recency question | Perplexity | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Live fetch when a user asks | Yes: Perplexity-User, which generally ignores robots.txt | Yes: ChatGPT-User, for which robots.txt rules may not apply |
| Time for a robots.txt change to apply | Up to 24 hours | About 24 hours |
| Published recrawl interval | None | None |
| Published recency weight | None | None |
So a same-day edit can reach either engine through its live fetcher or wait for its index crawler, and neither company says which fires when. Any figure that weights Perplexity's freshness comes from outside observation, because neither vendor publishes one. How fast a brand-new page reaches Gemini and ChatGPT is a separate question.
Does updating content more often get a product page cited more?
Updating content more often does not by itself get a product page cited, because AI engines reward maintained substance, not new dates. One large study found AI assistants cite pages first published 2.9 years earlier on average, and it warns that "Low-quality, irrelevant content that's updated every day will not have a magic positive effect on your visibility in AI search" (Ahrefs, July 2025). It still concludes there "may be some benefit to regularly updating content".
Maintenance shows up in citations all the same. A 2026 study found 75% of the pages ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity cited had been updated in the past year, with Perplexity the most forgiving of older pages (Seer Interactive, July 2026).
Google says its systems "look at several factors" to estimate when a page was "published or significantly updated" (Google Search Central, October 2026). So a new date on unchanged copy is not a significant update. It also spends the one signal, a visible and truthful last-updated date, that makes a dated claim trustworthy.
What should set the update cadence for a Shopify product page?
Facts that expire should set the update cadence for a Shopify product page: price, stock, compatibility and policy. Shopify Catalog, the product feed Shopify shares with AI channels, "continuously updates your product data, ensuring that there's accurate inventory and pricing" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
ChatGPT can still trail a price change. OpenAI says that when merchants change prices or shipping terms, "there may be some delay before it is reflected in the information you see" (OpenAI Help Center, October 2026). So price and stock travel through the catalog, and the product page only has to agree with it.
In Deploi's judgment, a merchant selling 400 SKUs (stock keeping units) with seasonal ranges needs a quarterly review of dated claims on the page. Price and availability need a same-day path.
When is a content refresh schedule the wrong investment?
A content refresh schedule is the wrong investment when it changes no fact a shopper or an AI engine relies on, as in these four cases.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- The AI-visibility tooling market sells refresh frequency as a ranking lever and charges monthly for it. We have seen no vendor documentation supporting a recency weight, and we will not price work against a number nobody publishes.
- What we check first
- where each expiring fact lives. In our judgment, the pages that go stale are the ones with facts typed into rich-text fields: a spec written into a paragraph has no owner and no expiry, while the same spec in a metafield shows up in a report when it's empty.
- What this page adds
- that Perplexity and ChatGPT document the same two fetchers and no recency weight, and that two citation-age studies found ChatGPT citing newer pages than Perplexity.
Decision records behind this answer
When this answer changes
- Perplexity or OpenAI publishes a recrawl interval, a freshness signal or a recency weight.
- Ahrefs or another named study repeats the citation-age comparison with newer data, or for product pages alone.
- Shopify's Help Center names Perplexity as a channel that reads Shopify Catalog, or Shopify's blog stops saying it does.
- OpenAI shortens the delay before merchant price changes reach ChatGPT's product results.
- Perplexity or OpenAI changes how its user-triggered fetcher treats robots.txt.
Related questions
- How much organic traffic and sales are Shopify merchants actually seeing from Perplexity right now, versus ChatGPT or Gemini?
Perplexity sends stores less traffic than ChatGPT or Gemini: 3.7% of AI visits in 2026, against 88.1% for ChatGPT and 5.1% for Gemini, across 73 stores, 42 on Shopify (Shero Commerce, September 2026).
- Does Gemini favor content that's already indexed in Google's main index, meaning a brand-new page won't show up in Gemini answers as fast as in ChatGPT's?
Yes: Gemini's search-grounded answers can cite a brand-new page only after Google indexes it, because grounding runs through Google Search (Google AI for Developers, October 2026).
