What does Searchspring actually do for a Shopify store's search and merchandising?
Short answer
Searchspring, now Athos Commerce, runs a Shopify store's search, filters and merchandising from its own index of the catalog, not Shopify's search (Athos support, October 2026). Its console lets merchandisers pin, boost and schedule products on search and category pages (Athos site, October 2026). Recommendations and bundles run there too, so one dashboard covers site discovery (Athos listing, October 2026).

Deploi’s call
Buy Searchspring, now Athos Commerce, for the merchandising console and the relevance tuning. Do not buy it for filters: of search, merchandising and filters, filters are the cheapest to own yourself.
BuyBuy Athos when
- Your catalog has passed about 10,000 stock keeping units (SKUs), where Deploi's Athos versus native record estimates payback in 6 to 9 months, an illustrative estimate (October 2026).
- A merchandiser, not a developer, will pin, boost and schedule products every week.
- Zero-result searches and coarse filters already show in your search analytics.
- Athos agrees to a 12-month term with written export terms for synonyms, rules and analytics (Deploi's Athos versus native record, October 2026).
WaitStay on Shopify's native tools while
- Your catalog is under about 1,000 SKUs, which the same record scores WAIT (Deploi's Athos versus native record, October 2026).
- The need is filters, which Deploi's filters record scores CUSTOMIZE on a metafield schema (October 2026).
- Nobody on your team will own the merchandising rules.
Basis: Athos Commerce vs. Native Search & Discovery: Upgrade or Wait?, our Build vs. Buy decision record, scored BUY.
What does Athos Commerce run on a Shopify store?
Athos Commerce runs search, filters and merchandising on a Shopify store from its own index of your catalog. The Athos app pulls five field types from Shopify: core fields, variant fields, tags, metafields and metaobjects (Athos Commerce, October 2026). Tags must be Key:Value pairs such as Material:Brass before Athos can filter on them. Athos also asks you to keep products with metafields to 20,000 or fewer, because more "can drastically increase the time it takes your store's data to sync with Athos" (Athos Commerce, October 2026). From that index, Athos serves three things:
- Search relevance. Autocomplete, instant search, typo tolerance, synonym groups, personalized search and custom ranking (Athos listing, October 2026). Shopify's own search already adds semantic search on Grow, Advanced and Plus (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so Athos competes on tuning.
- Filters. Custom filters built on the Athos index. Shopify's own filters disappear on collections with more than 5,000 products (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Merchandising. Boost rules, pinned products, scheduled campaigns and A/B tests on search and category pages (Athos Commerce, October 2026), plus recommendations, frequently bought together and bundles. Whether recommendations lift order value needs its own test.
Is Athos worth buying for the console, the search or the filters?
Athos is worth buying for its merchandising console and its search tuning, not for its filters. Shopify's native boosts work only in online store search (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), and collection pages only sort, by one of six options (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So a merchandiser who re-sorts category pages every week has no native rules engine to use. Deploi's merchandising rules record scores a console BUY at that cadence (October 2026). The record's reason is that preview, scheduling and drag-to-pin are months of interface work a vendor spreads across thousands of stores. Deploi's answer on the catalog size where Athos's rule engine starts to win sets that threshold against Shopify's documented limits.
Filters are the opposite case. Deploi's filters record scores filters CUSTOMIZE: model facet attributes as metafields first, because native Search & Discovery renders them free to roughly 1,000 stock keeping units (SKUs) (October 2026). That schema works on any engine, though above 20,000 products it runs into Athos's advice to keep products with metafields to 20,000 or fewer. In our judgment, a discovery platform bought for filters alone is this category's most avoidable overspend.
How is Athos priced and sold?
Athos sells its plans by quote, and its pricing page lists no figures. Onsite Discovery, Offsite Discovery and Complete Discovery each say "Request Pricing," and Athos calls Onsite and Offsite "standalone annual plans" (Athos Commerce, October 2026). The old searchspring.com/pricing address now redirects to that Athos page. Onsite Discovery covers search, merchandising and personalization and sells AI product recommendations as an add-on, so one plan can cover all three machines sold as merchandising AI: ranking, recommendations and personalization. The Shopify app is free to install, and Athos bills its charges in US dollars, separately from your Shopify invoice (Athos listing, October 2026). The listing names no Shopify plan requirement, which the answer on whether Athos needs Shopify Plus checks against Shopify's own plan pages.
Klevu, which joined Searchspring to form Athos, still sells its own Shopify app with list prices. Klevu Site Search costs $649 a month with 50,000 search requests included, and its Category Merch and Recommendations add-ons cost $549 and $449 a month (Klevu listing, October 2026). Those are Klevu's prices, not an Athos quote. Deploi's answer on choosing Athos over Algolia compares the two vendors for a mid-market brand.
What changed at Searchspring after the Athos merger?
Searchspring and Klevu announced their combination as Athos Commerce on 13 January 2025 (Athos Commerce, October 2026), and the move to one platform is still under way. Searchspring's Shopify app now lists as Athos: Unified Discovery. The listing dates from 17 April 2014 (Athos listing, October 2026), and its older reviews still name Searchspring (Athos reviews, October 2026). Athos's August 2025 rollout plan put early access in Q4 2025 and general availability in Q1 2026. The plan promised "a clear upgrade path for Searchspring customers and a migration path for Klevu customers" (Athos Commerce, October 2026). The Business Wire copy of that release adds a 2027 milestone: "Beginning in 2027, legacy platforms will be gradually retired" (Business Wire, October 2026). Athos's own copy of the post does not show that line. Athos then launched its Intelligent Discovery Platform on 10 June 2026, "available immediately" (Athos Commerce, October 2026).
So ask which platform the contract puts you on, legacy Searchspring or the new Athos platform, because a legacy start means a second migration later. Deploi's answer on the Searchspring implementation timeline covers how long the first one takes.
What do Athos's Shopify reviews warn buyers about?
Athos's Shopify reviews warn buyers about support and renewal terms, and the newest reviews are the harshest. The listing shows 3.1 stars on about 20 reviews, though most of them give five stars (Athos reviews, October 2026). Shopify's overall rating "isn't simply an average of star ratings; it's weighted to prioritize recent, useful, and trustworthy reviews" (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). The two most recent dates on the listing are in July 2026: a two-star review posted on 10 July and a one-star review edited on 30 July. One says Athos "won't help tune the search"; the other says the contract auto-renewed "without sending any renewal reminders beforehand."
So write the exit into the contract before you sign. Deploi's Athos versus native record advises a 12-month term, price-lock language for the renewal and written export terms for synonyms, rules and search analytics (October 2026). Stores that sell internationally need one more answer in writing: how Athos handles Shopify Markets catalogs.
When is Athos the wrong purchase?
Athos is the wrong purchase for a small catalog, a filters-only need or a team with nobody to own the rules.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- The category sells "unified discovery": one index behind search, filters, recommendations and feeds. Unification is what makes the fee hard to leave, because rules do not port between engines and every strategy gets re-keyed by hand on exit. We would rather a merchant buy the one surface that needs a vendor and own the rest.
- What we tell clients to do first
- Name an owner for every merchandising rule and put a monthly review of stale rules on the calendar. In our judgment, the costly failure is a rule nobody owns, such as a campaign boost still running after the campaign ended, not the ranking algorithm.
Decision records behind this answer
When this answer changes
- Athos publishes list prices or changes its three plans.
- Athos sets dates for retiring the legacy Searchspring or Klevu platforms, or adds the 2027 sunset to its own copy of the rollout post.
- The Athos listing's rating moves off 3.1 stars, or its review count jumps.
- Shopify adds scheduling, a bury option or collection-page boosts to Search & Discovery.
- Athos changes its guidance to keep products with metafields to 20,000 or fewer.
Follow-up questions
How it compares
- At what SKU count does Searchspring's merchandising rule engine start beating Shopify's native Search & Discovery boost/bury tools?
Searchspring's rule engine, now sold by Athos Commerce, starts beating Shopify's native tools at roughly 1,000 stock keeping units (SKUs) once merchandisers re-sort weekly (Deploi Build vs. Buy, October 2026).
- Why would a mid-market brand choose Searchspring/Athos over Algolia specifically, when both serve the same search-and-merchandising need?
Athos Commerce, formerly Searchspring, beats Algolia when a merchandising team, not an engineer, will run search, because Athos builds and maintains the Shopify integration on its managed path (Athos guide, October 2026).
If you're not the typical case
- Does Searchspring require Shopify Plus, or does it work on standard Shopify plans?
Searchspring, now Athos Commerce, does not require Shopify Plus.
- Does Searchspring support multi-currency or multi-region catalogs for a Shopify Markets international setup?
Athos Commerce, formerly Searchspring, advertises multi-currency support but documents no Shopify Markets setup for its Shopify app.
What to do next
- What onboarding/setup timeline should a mid-market Shopify Plus merchant expect when implementing Searchspring from scratch?
Athos Commerce, formerly Searchspring, gives 8 to 12 weeks for an Athos-led build and leaves agency-led builds "Determined by Agency" (Athos implementation guide, October 2026).
Related questions
- What does 'merchandising AI' actually mean on Shopify? Is it search, personalization, or something broader?
Merchandising AI on Shopify is three machines, not one: ranking, recommendations and personalization.
- Does AI-powered product recommendation (upsell/cross-sell apps) actually lift AOV meaningfully for a mid-market catalog, or is that overstated?
AI product recommendation apps have no public average order value (AOV) lift range for mid-market Shopify catalogs (Deploi search, October 2026), so any AOV percentage stays unproven until your own holdout test confirms it.
