Is Langify still worth paying for now that Shopify's native Translate & Adapt is free and improving?
Langify still earns $17.50 to $59.95 per month for stores that need third-party app content translated or more than two auto-translated languages (App Store listing, September 2026). Shopify Translate & Adapt auto-translates two languages free and reaches only native Shopify resources. Stores at two languages with no app-generated copy save the whole fee.
What $17.50 a month actually buys in 2026
Langify's Basic tier lists: up to 20 languages, 24/7 support, up to 21% AI translation discount, 10,000 free words, and third-party app translation (App Store listing, September 2026). Strip out the things native already does for free and the residual is two items: the word allowance, and app translation.
That is a much smaller product than Langify sold in 2023, and the pricing reflects it. The free tier now covers unlimited manual translations across five languages, which is Langify conceding the base case to Shopify and repricing around the gap.
The decision, as thresholds
| Your situation | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Two locales, all content in products, collections, pages and theme | Drop it. Native does this and costs nothing |
| Three or more locales, and you want machine translation to do the first pass | Keep a paid tier. Free native MT stops at two languages, confirmed by Shopify staff (Shopify Community, Oct 2022) and unchanged since |
| Any locale where app-generated copy is customer-facing | Keep Basic at minimum. Native cannot reach it at any price |
| High word volume and frequent catalog change | Compare Growth ($29.95, 50,000 words) and Premium ($59.95, 200,000 words) against per-word agency cost. The allowance is the product |
| You need reviewer sign-off before a translation publishes | Neither tool solves this. See the outsourcing page in this thread |
The honest counter-argument to keeping it
Langify holds your translations in its own layer. Moving off it later is a content migration, not an uninstall, and it is the sort of migration that gets deferred for years because nothing visibly breaks while you defer it. If your only remaining reason to pay is a 10,000-word allowance you could buy directly from a machine translation vendor, you are paying a subscription to keep an exit cost.
When NOT to cancel
- Mid-season. Translation drift is invisible for weeks and then obvious to one market's customers all at once.
- Before you have exported. Get the translations out as CSV and confirm the file opens and is complete, and only then cancel.
- When the fee is the only thing you are measuring. $17.50 a month is $210 a year. One quarter of a marketing coordinator re-keying app copy costs more than that.
The Deploi point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.
- Our take: Langify is worth paying for at Basic and rarely worth paying for above it, unless the word allowance is doing real work. The tiering above $17.50 prices translation volume, and translation volume is a thing you can buy more cheaply elsewhere once you have the workflow.
- What we’ve seen: The cancellation that goes badly is the one nobody exported first. The cancellation that goes well starts with a CSV, a spot check of three product pages per locale, and a fortnight of overlap.
- Where we disagree: The stock advice is "native is free, so cancel." That advice is right for the two-locale case and wrong everywhere else, and it is given without anyone asking how many locales you run. Ask the locale count first and the answer falls out.
- What this page adds: what is left in Langify's paid tiers after you subtract everything native now does for free, which is two line items, not a feature list.
