Data & Customer Migration

What's the honest cost-benefit case for migrating from Recharge/Skio to Shopify's native Subscriptions APIs, given the 2026 Recharge-Skio acquisition uncertainty?

Short answer

Migrating from Recharge or Skio to Shopify Subscriptions trades a per-transaction fee for a portal without cancellation saves (Shopify Help Center, October 2026); the Skio deal alone is no reason to move. Shopify's app is free (Shopify App Store, October 2026), so leaving Recharge saves $99 or $499 monthly plus 1.49% or 1.34% and 19¢ per transaction (Recharge pricing, October 2026). Rebuild product-page purchase options first.

Deploi’s call

Moving from Recharge or Skio to Shopify Subscriptions pays only once the native app covers the retention tools you actually use, and the Skio deal doesn't change that. The subscription app you pay for is the portal, the dunning and the cohort reporting. It is not the product-page selector, and it is not the billing cadence. Migrate for a portal you have outgrown, not for a fee you resent.

CustomizeRebuild the product-page purchase options now when

  • Recharge or Skio renders the subscribe-and-save selector today, although your theme can render the app's selling plans itself (Shopify developer docs, October 2026).
  • A theme rebuild or a replatform is already planned, so the selector ships with the new theme instead of as a separate project.
  • You want the next billing decision, native or paid, to leave the product page untouched.

WaitHold the billing move until

  • Shopify Subscriptions covers the retention tools your subscribers use. Today it ends billing the moment a subscriber cancels (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • Your program sells no bundles, which aren't compatible with Shopify Subscriptions (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • Your app is Shopify Checkout integrated, the only case in which Shopify Subscriptions imports its contracts (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • The fee line is the reason, not the Skio deal: Recharge says nothing is changing today for merchants on either platform (Recharge, October 2026).

What does leaving Recharge or Skio for Shopify Subscriptions save?

Leaving Recharge or Skio for Shopify Subscriptions saves the whole subscription fee line, because Shopify's own app is free (Shopify App Store, October 2026). Recharge and Skio each charge a monthly plan plus a share of every transaction (Recharge pricing; Skio on the Shopify App Store, October 2026). So at mid-market volume, the per-transaction share is most of the bill.

Recharge and Skio charge a plan fee plus a share of each transaction, $7,599 to $9,449 a month at 10,000 transactions of $50, while Shopify Subscriptions is free

At $500,000 a month in subscription transactions, the fee line runs about $91,000 to $113,000 a year at those list rates (Deploi arithmetic from the table). Recharge prices its Custom plan on volume (Recharge pricing, October 2026), so a list rate is a ceiling, not a quote. The saving is real, which means the decision rests on what the fee buys.

What would you give up by leaving Recharge or Skio for Shopify Subscriptions?

Leaving Recharge or Skio for Shopify Subscriptions gives up the retention layer you pay for: cancellation saves, payment recovery beyond the retries Shopify's app runs, and bundles. When a subscriber cancels in Shopify's app, "billing and delivery ends immediately", and Shopify describes no save offer before it (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Recharge's $99 Starter plan lists Smart Cancellation Prevention and Failed Payment Recovery (Recharge pricing, October 2026). Bundles are the one native-only hard stop: "Bundles aren't compatible with the Shopify Subscriptions app" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So count last quarter's saves, recovered payments and bundle subscribers first: each is a cost of leaving.

Shopify's other limits don't add to that cost, because Shopify lists them for all subscription products, whatever the app (Shopify Help Center, October 2026):

  • Subscriptions can't be used with draft orders.
  • Gift cards pay only the first payment.
  • The order edits application programming interface (API) doesn't support subscriptions.
  • Local, manual or non-credit-card payment methods "might not be available".

Recharge lists the same kinds of limit on its own Shopify checkout integration (Recharge Help Center, October 2026), so a Recharge program already runs without them. Which limits follow a store onto any app has its own answer. The same Recharge page notes that Shopify's business-to-business (B2B) wholesale "lists subscriptions as incompatible", so recurring B2B orders need their own migration plan.

What did the Recharge and Skio deal change?

The Recharge and Skio deal changed who owns two of the three obvious paid destinations; it did not change the native math. Recharge announced in April 2026 that "Skio is joining the Recharge team", and its post says "For merchants on both platforms, nothing is changing today" (Recharge, October 2026). The post says details of the combined roadmap are "coming in the months ahead", and it gives no closing date or price. Skio's App Store listing now reads "Skio, a Recharge Company", with Skio still named as developer (Skio listing, October 2026). So a move from Skio to Recharge escapes nothing, which is why Deploi's Skio versus native record treats choosing Skio as choosing Recharge's roadmap (October 2026).

Loop Subscriptions is now the only independent paid option of the three: free to 50 active subscriptions, then $99 a month plus 1.0% or $399 plus 0.75% per transaction (Loop on the Shopify App Store, October 2026). The native lane sits outside the deal too: Shopify Subscriptions keeps contracts inside Shopify, which Deploi's Recharge versus native record counts as the native lane's clean exit. That exit needs an export first, because uninstalling Shopify Subscriptions deletes the plans and contracts it created (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). The uncertainty gives you room to negotiate, so renegotiate your app's pricing tier before you pick a destination.

Which subscriber counts change the answer?

Three subscriber counts change whether and how to move off Recharge or Skio: about 2,000, 10,000 and 50,000 active subscribers, because each band changes how much of the migration a vendor's import can carry (Deploi's subscription migration record, October 2026). The record scores four profiles:

  • Under about 2,000 subscribers on simple plans: BUY the destination's migration service. Shopify Subscriptions is a free destination for weekly, monthly or yearly plans without bundles.
  • About 2,000 to 10,000 on one storefront: BUY a vendor-led migration, plus your own reconciliation checklist for billing dates and amounts.
  • About 10,000 to 50,000, or bundles and custom portal logic: CUSTOMIZE. Buy the destination, then build the glue the import skips: contract mapping, payment-method transfer checks and a reconciliation of each subscriber's billing date and amount.
  • 50,000 or more, several storefronts, or a second migration ahead: BUILD a first-party subscription data layer, so the next move re-points the billing engine instead of migrating again.

Whatever the count, the record says WAIT on any move between Skio and Recharge until the combined roadmap is in writing. Above the first band, cutting over all at once or by cohort becomes a real choice, and the glue deserves its own risk-mitigation budget line. Before you hire anyone for it, ask the questions that test an agency's subscription-migration track record.

What does moving subscribers off Recharge or Skio put at risk?

Moving subscribers off Recharge or Skio puts them at risk wherever a contract or a card fails to arrive billable. Community-reported migrations run 60 to 90 days with 2 to 5% subscriber loss, per the July 2026 research behind Deploi's migration record. That range is merchants' own accounts, not a forecast for your base.

A move onto Shopify Subscriptions is a contract import from a comma-separated values (CSV) file. Shopify can't import contracts from an app that isn't Shopify Checkout integrated, and can't import "directly from your third-party app" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Each row names the customer's payment method ID, so on the same store the import points at cards Shopify already holds (Deploi's reading of that guide). Uninstalling Recharge or Skio keeps contracts and payment information, but Shopify deletes the app's other subscription data after 48 hours (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So export save rules, portal settings and history first. After the move, Shopify Subscriptions' retry settings decide whether a subscription skips, pauses or cancels when every retry fails (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Choose skip or pause for the first cycles, because "Updating a payment method can't restore a cancelled subscription contract" (Shopify Help Center). The honest churn estimate, and the benchmark to hold an agency to, has its own answer, and so does the message for long-tenured, high-value subscribers.

When is migrating off Recharge or Skio the wrong call?

Migrating off Recharge or Skio is the wrong call in four cases, because each one spends a migration's risk on the wrong problem or at the wrong time.

The step that pays either way is the product page. Subscription apps create selling plans, and a theme can render them with Liquid and JavaScript (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). Shopify's theme guide lists the parts, from the product-page selector to the cart and order-page displays (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). So build the subscribe-and-save selector in your own theme now, which means the billing engine can be argued about later, on its own timetable.

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

What we’ve seen
Vendor imports move contracts. They do not move dunning state, portal customizations or churn-save rules, and the rebuild of those is agency time nobody quoted at kickoff. Where cards sit outside Shopify's vault, payment-method transfer is the single variable that decides whether the migration is boring or expensive.
Where we disagree
The category frames native subscriptions as "good enough now." Native is good enough for fixed-cadence replenishment on standard products and nothing more: bundles aren't compatible with it, and a cancellation in Shopify's app ends billing with no save step (checked October 2026). We would rather say that plainly than sell a migration into a wall.

When this answer changes

  • Shopify makes bundles compatible with Shopify Subscriptions, or adds cancellation saves or cohort reporting to it.
  • Recharge publishes the combined Recharge and Skio roadmap, or reprices either platform.
  • Recharge, Skio or Loop changes its plan fees or per-transaction rates.
  • Shopify changes which apps Shopify Subscriptions can import contracts from, or what it keeps when a subscription app is uninstalled.
  • Your subscriber count crosses about 2,000, 10,000 or 50,000, where Deploi's migration record changes its verdict.
