What this means for your decision
- Sizing the Canadian online market? Use C$59.2 billion, Statistics Canada's retail ecommerce sales for 2025, as the national online retail total; it was 7.0% of C$843.6 billion in retail sales. It covers the retail trade sector only, so do not read it as everything Canadians buy online. Annual sums and shares are computed by Deploi.
- Judging whether online is still gaining share? Read the trend from 3.5% in 2019 to 7.0% in 2025, not the last year alone. The share edged down from 7.1% in 2024 because total retail grew 3.6% in 2025 and ecommerce 2.9%; one year's dip does not by itself show a reversal, and the share was 7.1% in the 12 months to July 2026.
- Using the latest months? The 12 months to July 2026 total C$61.4 billion, 7.1% of retail sales. Values are unadjusted current dollars, so compare 12-month totals or the same month across years, not one month with the next. Most months since November 2022, July 2026 included, carry Statistics Canada's quality flag B or C for ecommerce sales, below its top grade A.
- Forecasting one store's Canadian sales? The national total frames the opportunity and does not forecast any store's revenue, and the table has no provincial or platform split of ecommerce sales. Use Quebec's share of retail sales for a regional view and the store's own Canadian orders for its likely share.

How many dollars of Canadian retail sales are online?
Canadian retail ecommerce sales were C$59.2 billion in 2025, up from C$22.5 billion in 2019, according to Statistics Canada table 20-10-0056-01. Statistics Canada publishes the values in thousands of Canadian dollars, and Deploi computed each annual total as the sum of 12 monthly unadjusted values. In the 12 months to July 2026 sales were C$61.4 billion.
Annual totals were C$39.3 billion in 2020, C$46.4 billion in 2021, C$42.4 billion in 2022, C$45.1 billion in 2023 and C$57.6 billion in 2024. Values are in current dollars as reported, with no adjustment for inflation or seasonality.

Did Canadian online retail keep growing after 2021?
Canadian retail ecommerce sales fell 8.6% in 2022 to C$42.4 billion, then rose 6.3% in 2023 and 27.7% in 2024, according to Statistics Canada table 20-10-0056-01. Growth slowed to 2.9% in 2025, to C$59.2 billion. The 2021 level of C$46.4 billion was passed only in 2024. Growth rates are computed by Deploi.
In 2025, total retail sales grew 3.6% to C$843.6 billion, faster than ecommerce at 2.9%, so the online share edged down from 7.1% in 2024 to 7.0%. The table gives no reason for the 2022 and 2023 dip, and Deploi offers none.
Can this table size the market for one Canadian store?
Statistics Canada table 20-10-0056-01 sizes Canadian retail ecommerce only as a national total, C$59.2 billion in 2025, with no split by province or platform. The total frames the decision to sell into Canada and does not forecast any one store's sales. Most monthly ecommerce values since November 2022, July 2026 included, carry Statistics Canada's quality flag B or C, not its top grade A.
Ecommerce and total retail both cover the retail trade sector as Statistics Canada defines it. For a provincial view, the Quebec market page uses total retail sales as the size measure. For the monthly pattern, see when Canadians shop online.

Caveats: Canadian retail ecommerce and total retail sales, monthly, unadjusted, 2019 to July 2026
- Values are unadjusted and in current Canadian dollars, which Statistics Canada publishes in thousands. They keep the seasonal pattern and include price changes.
- Annual and 12-month rows are sums of 12 monthly values, computed by Deploi. Statistics Canada does not publish them in this table.
- Ecommerce sales and total retail sales both cover the retail trade sector as Statistics Canada defines it.
- From November 2022 to July 2026, every monthly ecommerce value except June 2023 and June 2026 carries Statistics Canada quality flag B or C, below its top grade A; earlier months carry no flag. The latest month, July 2026, carries flag B.
- The table has no provincial ecommerce figures, so the ecommerce share is a national measure only.
