Short answer
HTTP Archive's September 2026 crawl detected 452,270 mobile origins running Shopify, up from 60,749 in January 2020 and 414,540 in January 2026. The count covers sites with enough Chrome traffic to appear in the Chrome UX Report, so it is a measured count of sites, not Shopify's merchant count, and it leaves out sites with little Chrome traffic.

Shopify origins in HTTP Archive's September 2026 crawl, by crawl
- Mobile
- 452,270HTTP Archive's mobile crawl detected Shopify on 452,270 origins in September 2026, up from 60,749 in January 2020.
- Desktop
- 317,646HTTP Archive's desktop crawl detected Shopify on 317,646 origins in September 2026, up from 56,562 in January 2020. Desktop is a separate crawl from the mobile default; quote each count with its crawl and never add the two.
- A count of websites with enough Chrome traffic to appear in the Chrome UX Report on which HTTP Archive detects Shopify; it is not a merchant count, because a store appears only once it has that much Chrome traffic.
- HTTP Archive's crawl and detection can change between crawls, so a step between two crawls is not necessarily new sites.
- The series uses the January and July crawls of each year and the latest crawl, September 2026; months in between are not shown.
- Mobile origins are the default; desktop origins, selectable and in the data table, are lower in every crawl shown (317,646 in September 2026).
- The last step runs from July to September 2026, two months, where earlier steps are six months, so the final segment is steeper per month.

What this means for your decision
- Quoting how many Shopify sites exist? Quote 452,270 mobile origins in HTTP Archive's September 2026 crawl, with the crawl month. It counts sites with enough Chrome traffic to appear in the Chrome UX Report, so it is not a store or merchant count and leaves out sites with little traffic.
- Checking a claim of millions of Shopify stores? Ask for the claim's own source and date; this dataset cannot confirm it. The independent count is 452,270 origins, and one merchant can run several, so the two figures measure different things.
- Tracking growth over time? Compare crawls a year apart, such as 375,794 in January 2025 and 414,540 in January 2026. Read a single step with caution, because crawl and detection changes can move the line, as in the jump from 60,749 to 123,370 during 2020.
- Sizing Shopify against WooCommerce? WooCommerce had more detected origins in September 2026, 553,677 against 452,270, but among the January and July crawls shown it has fallen since its January 2024 peak of 655,994, while Shopify rose in each of them. Both counts are sites, not sales.
How many Shopify sites does an independent crawl see?
HTTP Archive detected Shopify on 60,749 mobile origins in January 2020, 184,533 in January 2022, 345,865 in January 2024 and 452,270 in September 2026, a rise in every January and July crawl shown. The crawl is independent of Shopify and counts websites with enough Chrome traffic to appear in the Chrome UX Report.
Choose the crawl to see the count from HTTP Archive's mobile or desktop crawl.
The series uses the January and July crawls of each year and the latest crawl, September 2026. Months in between are not shown.
How fast has the measured count grown?
The measured Shopify count more than doubled from 60,749 mobile origins in January 2020 to 123,370 in July 2020 and reached 152,253 in January 2021, according to HTTP Archive. From January 2024 it rose from 345,865 to 375,794 in January 2025, 414,540 in January 2026 and 452,270 in September 2026.
Across the January and July crawls shown, growth since 2024 is steadier than in 2020, though HTTP Archive's monthly crawls in between sometimes dip. In 2026 the count went from 414,540 in January to 438,071 in July and 452,270 in September.
Does the 452,270 count mean 452,270 Shopify stores?
No. The 452,270 is the number of mobile origins HTTP Archive detected as Shopify in September 2026, among websites with enough Chrome traffic to appear in the Chrome UX Report. A store appears only once it has that much traffic, and one merchant can run more than one origin.
Desktop origins, in the data table, are lower in every crawl: 317,646 in September 2026. Neither figure is a merchant count. Shopify last gave a merchant count for fiscal 2021; see metrics Shopify no longer reports.
Why can the line step up or down between crawls?
HTTP Archive's crawl and detection can change between crawls, so a step between two crawls is not necessarily new sites. The Shopify series jumped from 60,749 mobile origins in January 2020 to 123,370 in July 2020, a step to read with caution, and rose in every January and July crawl shown through September 2026.
HTTP Archive publishes its detection data through the Tech Report adoption API. Deploi reads it as published and does not adjust the counts for detection changes.
How does the Shopify count compare with WooCommerce?
WooCommerce had more detected mobile origins than Shopify in every January and July crawl shown, 553,677 against 452,270 in September 2026, according to HTTP Archive. Among those crawls, WooCommerce peaked at 655,994 in January 2024 and has fallen since, while Shopify rose in each, from 345,865 in January 2024.
In January 2020 the counts were 144,155 for WooCommerce and 60,749 for Shopify, more than twice as many for WooCommerce. By September 2026 the ratio had narrowed, while the difference between the two counts had grown. The series covers detected sites, not sales.
When should a Shopify store count be quoted?
Quote the HTTP Archive figure as a count of sites with measurable Chrome traffic, with its date: 452,270 mobile origins in September 2026. Do not describe it as the number of Shopify merchants or stores. A claim of millions of stores needs its own source, and none appears in this dataset.
The data table lists every crawl for Shopify and WooCommerce, with mobile and desktop origins. Cite the crawl month with the number.

Methodology
Reading the chart: HTTP Archive counts 452,270 Shopify sites with measurable Chrome traffic, up from 60,749 in 2020
- A count of websites with enough Chrome traffic to appear in the Chrome UX Report on which HTTP Archive detects Shopify; it is not a merchant count, because a store appears only once it has that much Chrome traffic.
Caveats: Shopify and WooCommerce origins detected by HTTP Archive, January 2020 to September 2026
- Counts are origins, websites with enough Chrome traffic to appear in the Chrome UX Report, on which HTTP Archive detects the platform. They are not counts of stores or merchants.
- HTTP Archive's crawl and detection can change between crawls, so a step between two crawls is not necessarily new or lost sites.
- Mobile and desktop origins are separate counts of the same crawl and are not added together.
- Figures marked computed by Deploi on the story page are WooCommerce origins minus Shopify origins for the gap, the later count divided by the earlier count, minus 1, for change, and WooCommerce origins divided by Shopify origins for the ratio.
- The crawls shown are each January and July from 2020 and September 2026; months in between are not in the dataset.

Questions
How many websites run Shopify?
HTTP Archive detected Shopify on 452,270 mobile origins in its September 2026 crawl. These are websites with enough Chrome traffic to appear in the Chrome UX Report, so sites with little traffic are not counted.
Is 452,270 the number of Shopify merchants?
No. It is a count of mobile origins detected as Shopify by HTTP Archive in September 2026, not a merchant count. One merchant can run several origins, and a store appears only once it has enough Chrome traffic.
How has the number of Shopify sites changed since 2020?
HTTP Archive's count of Shopify mobile origins rose from 60,749 in January 2020 to 184,533 in January 2022, 345,865 in January 2024 and 452,270 in September 2026. It rose in every January and July crawl shown, though HTTP Archive's monthly crawls in between sometimes dip.
Does HTTP Archive count Shopify desktop sites too?
Yes. The dataset also holds desktop origins, which were 317,646 for Shopify in September 2026, lower than the 452,270 mobile origins. The chart shows mobile origins by default, and its crawl option draws the desktop series, which the data table also lists.
Does WooCommerce have more sites than Shopify?
By HTTP Archive's count, yes: 553,677 WooCommerce mobile origins to 452,270 Shopify mobile origins in September 2026. WooCommerce peaked at 655,994 in January 2024 among the January and July crawls shown.
