What's the actual difference between 'multi-language' and 'multi-market' in Shopify's terminology? Are they always linked?
Short answer
Multi-market and multi-language are separate Shopify settings, linked only through domains, because each market uses a domain and languages are assigned to domains (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A market sets currency, pricing and content for a group of customers (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A language is a translated version of the store's content.

Deploi’s call
Markets and languages are separate decisions, so scope them as two lists with two owners. Only then ask which languages each market publishes. Teams that write one combined list end up with a market per language, which multiplies configuration for no commercial reason.
WaitOpen the market without a new language when
- The new market's shoppers read a language you already publish, as UK and Australian shoppers read a US brand's English.
- The market needs only its own currency, catalog or domain, which Shopify lets every plan set per market (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- You aren't committing to a second language this quarter. Deploi's translation record scores single-language stores WAIT, with nothing to buy or build until that commitment (Deploi decision record, October 2026).
CustomizeScope a language workstream beside the market when
- The market's shoppers read a language you don't publish yet, so its translations have to exist before launch.
- The market needs language settings of its own, which means its own domain or subfolder (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- You will publish three to five languages on a content-heavy catalog. Deploi's translation record scores that CUSTOMIZE, because "Per-field manual editing stops scaling around here" (Deploi decision record, October 2026).
Basis: Should You Build or Buy Translation on Shopify?, our Build vs. Buy decision record, scored CUSTOMIZE.
What is the difference between a market and a language in Shopify?
A market in Shopify controls how a group of customers experiences your store, while a language is a translation of the store's content. Shopify groups a market's customers by "location, customer group, retail location, or sales channel". Each market can then carry customizations "including currency, language, pricing, and theme content" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A language is a layer you add, translate and publish. Publishing one creates language-specific URLs, such as example.com/fr (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So a market decides who sees which prices and content, and a language decides which words they read. Which tool fills each language with translations is a separate decision: whether Shopify's free Translate & Adapt app is enough for a mid-market store.
Are multi-language and multi-market always linked in Shopify?
Multi-language and multi-market are not always linked: they connect only through domains, so one market can carry several languages and one language can serve several markets. Shopify's rule is "Languages are assigned to domains, and each market uses a domain" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A language assigned to a domain reaches every market that uses that domain. A market on its own subfolder, such as example.com/en-ca, can keep its own language settings. Without international domains, "your language settings are the same for all of your active markets" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- A new market is not a translation project. A US brand adding a UK market adds a market and a currency, and its UK shoppers read the English it already publishes. English-only expansion needs no translation app.
- A new language is not a market project. A US brand adding Spanish for its US shoppers adds a language and translates into it, with no new market.
- One market can carry two languages. A Canadian market can publish English and French on the same domain.
What limits apply to languages and to markets on each Shopify plan?
Languages have a published limit on every Shopify plan, while markets have a count by plan that Shopify doesn't publish, so only the language ceiling can be planned from Shopify's own pages.
| Setting | Basic | Grow | Advanced | Shopify Plus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Languages a store can sell in | 20 | 20 | 20 | 30 |
| Published market count | None | None | None | None |
| Domains and languages per market | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Theme customization per market | No | No | Yes | Yes |
Creating regional markets "is free for all Shopify plans", and Shopify's Markets requirements page lists no count (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A Shopify staff reply says the number of international markets "correlates to their plan type", with no figures (Shopify developer community, May 2025). The "3 included, 50 max" figures in circulation come from a community member's question in that thread. One merchant was told of "a 3 market limit with the new plan" (Shopify Community, April 2025). So get your plan's market count from Shopify in writing; how that count weighs on an Advanced versus Plus decision is answered separately.
Why is unpublishing a language an SEO event?
Unpublishing a language is a search engine optimization (SEO) event because every link in that language starts returning a 404 error. Shopify's unpublish step "hides the language from customers without deleting the language or the translations" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). But "Any links to the store in that particular language result in a 404 error", so Shopify tells you to create redirects. Unpublishing also removes the language from every domain it was assigned to, which takes it away from every market that uses those domains. Removing a language from one domain stops its URLs on that domain, while its translations stay in the store. So map the language's URLs and plan redirects before any language change, and tell whoever owns search traffic in that market.
When should you not treat a language and a market as one project?
A language and a market belong in one project only where the market's shoppers read a language you don't publish yet. Every other pairing adds setup without adding sales.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- What we’ve seen
- An avoidable cost we see in international scopes is a market created for a language. Four European languages become four markets, each with its own price list and its own shipping configuration, when the brand sells to all of Europe on one price list and needed one market.
- Where we disagree
- The category treats markets as the international feature and languages as a sub-setting of it. Structurally it is the other way round for a content team: languages are the expensive, ongoing commitment, and markets are configuration you do once.
- What this page adds
- The parent compares translation tools; this page separates the two Shopify settings those tools sit under. Languages reach markets only through domains, Shopify publishes a 20 or 30 language limit, and it publishes no market count for any plan.
Decision records behind this answer
When this answer changes
- Shopify publishes a market count for any plan, or confirms the 3-market limit merchants report.
- Shopify changes the 20-language limit below Plus or the 30-language limit on Plus.
- Shopify lets a market set its own languages without its own domain or subfolder.
- Shopify moves theme customization per market below the Advanced plan.

- For a brand at $40M GMV with 20% B2B share and active international expansion into 2 new markets this year, do all three factors point the same direction, or do they conflict?
All three factors point toward Shopify Plus; none argues for Advanced.
- How much does adding international/multi-market complexity (Managed Markets setup, multi-currency) typically add to a Shopify Plus project quote?
Shopify Managed Markets, the cross-border service with Global-e as merchant of record, adds a per-transaction fee to Shopify Plus projects, not a build line.
