How much does adding international/multi-market complexity (Managed Markets setup, multi-currency) typically add to a Shopify Plus project quote?
Short answer
Shopify Managed Markets, the cross-border service with Global-e as merchant of record, adds a per-transaction fee to Shopify Plus projects, not a build line. The fee is 3.25% on Plus and 3.5% on other plans, plus 1.5% currency conversion for a US store (Shopify pricing, October 2026). So quotes grow in the storefront: market-aware prices, localized content and per-market merchandising.
- Managed Markets fee on Shopify Plus
- 3.25% per transaction3.5% on Basic, Grow and Advanced. Currency conversion adds 1.5% for a US store; the Help Center says 2% elsewhere, though Shopify's pricing pages show 1.5%. Deploi’s call
Multi-market adds one priced component for each thing that differs per market, so count those things instead of applying an uplift. Most brands discover the honest answer is "two things differ, badly" and the scope shrinks.
WaitConfigure markets natively and skip the build when
- International is under about 10% of revenue. Deploi's multi-currency and market pricing record scores that WAIT, because Shopify Markets defaults cover a testing phase (Deploi decision record, October 2026).
- Every market sells the same catalog in one language, so nothing on the storefront differs by market.
- Your business can use Managed Markets, so Global-e carries duties and tax as merchant of record for 3.25% per transaction on Shopify Plus (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
CustomizeQuote per-market storefront work when
- Markets need fixed local prices. Deploi's multi-currency and market pricing record scores per-market price lists CUSTOMIZE once international passes 25% of revenue or regional pricing drives margin (Deploi decision record, October 2026).
- Two or more locales change faster than translations keep up. Deploi's localized content ops record scores a light workflow layer over Translate & Adapt CUSTOMIZE at two to three locales (Deploi decision record, October 2026).
- Part of the range cannot legally sell in every market. Deploi's cross-market catalog record scores a per-market eligibility record CUSTOMIZE from about the third market and BUILD for regulated ranges (Deploi decision record, October 2026).
Basis: Should You Build or Buy Multi-Currency & Market Pricing on Shopify?, our Build vs. Buy decision record, scored CUSTOMIZE.
Does Managed Markets add a line to a Shopify Plus project quote?
Managed Markets adds no Shopify setup fee and no build line to a Shopify Plus project quote, because Shopify charges for it per transaction. Shopify lists one-session setup and no contract period (Shopify, October 2026). Deploi's cross-border stack record allows an illustrative $0 to $5,000 for activation and Harmonized System (HS) code review (Deploi decision record, October 2026). Shopify's pricing page also says the only upfront cost of selling internationally is the monthly Shopify plan. The Managed Markets fee is 3.5% per transaction, or 3.25% on Shopify Plus, and Shopify's managed international pricing raises international prices to cover it.
So the multi-market increment on the line items of a Shopify Plus migration quote sits in development and quality assurance (QA) work, not in a platform line. Whether the fee pays its way under $5M of international sales is a separate margin question.
Where does each multi-market cost land?
Only storefront work is a build line on a Shopify Plus project quote; every other multi-market cost lands on international prices, the buyer's price or the payout. Managed Markets setup is the exception: Shopify charges nothing for it beyond the plan. Shopify bills Managed Markets, currency conversion and duties per international order, so none of them reaches the quote (Shopify, October 2026).
| Cost | How Shopify charges it | Where it lands |
|---|---|---|
| Managed Markets setup | One-session setup, no upfront cost or contract | No Shopify charge; at most a small activation and Harmonized System (HS) code review task |
| Managed Markets fee | 3.5% per transaction, or 3.25% on Shopify Plus | International prices by default; with fixed international pricing, Shopify says fees may apply differently |
| Currency conversion | 1.5% for a US store; elsewhere 1.5% on Shopify's pricing pages, 2% in its Help Center | The buyer's price |
| Duties and import tax at checkout | None with Managed Markets; otherwise a 0.5% optional add-on (regular fee 0.85% with Shopify Payments, 1.5% without) | Payout, when collected |
| Storefront work per market | Not a Shopify charge | The project quote |
Which businesses can use Managed Markets at all?
Only businesses based in the continental United States, and certain stores in Canada and the United Kingdom, can use Shopify Managed Markets (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). The store also needs the Basic plan or higher, an online store and Shopify Payments, and Global-e then becomes its merchant of record (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). The full eligibility matrix, including fulfillment location and store currency, is its own answer.
A business outside those countries changes the quote, not just the fee, because it needs another merchant of record or its own cross-border stack. Deploi's cross-border stack record scopes that stack as Harmonized System (HS) code data, pricing and routing glue, with tax registrations and filings on top as professional fees (Deploi decision record, October 2026). So check eligibility in week one of scoping, before anyone prices the storefront.
Which storefront components does multi-market add to a Shopify Plus quote?
Multi-market adds three new storefront components to a Shopify Plus quote: market price lists, a localized content workflow and a per-market catalog record. Deploi's decision records on market pricing, localized content and catalog divergence cover all three (October 2026). Price display, navigation and merchandising re-run theme components a migration quote already carries, with more variants. Checkout quality assurance (QA) grows too, on its own line of the quote.
| Component | What differs by market | Record timeline (illustrative) |
|---|---|---|
| Market price lists | Fixed local prices and rounding instead of converted prices | 4 to 8 weeks |
| Localized content workflow | Size guides, shipping promises, returns terms and legal copy | 4 to 8 weeks |
| Per-market catalog record | Which products can legally sell in each market | 5 to 9 weeks for the first market, then days per market |
| Price display, navigation and merchandising | Landed prices, facets, hero and collection order | No record; re-runs existing theme components |
| Checkout quality assurance (QA) | Every checkout test case, per market, currency and payment method | No record; priced from the test matrix |
Checkout QA is budgeted by test matrix, not as a share of development time, so its cost here is a count of extra test cells.
Why won't Deploi quote a percentage uplift for multi-market?
Deploi won't quote a percentage uplift for multi-market, because no defensible "multi-market adds X%" figure exists, ours or anyone's. The increment depends on how much of the storefront genuinely differs by market. A brand selling the same catalog at the same price in three English-speaking countries adds very little. A brand with different catalogs, legal copy and merchandising in six markets is running six storefronts that share a codebase. So ask for the component list per market instead, with a price against each component. That list is real and checkable, which means two agencies' quotes can be compared line by line.
When does multi-market add almost nothing to a Shopify Plus quote?
Multi-market adds almost nothing to a Shopify Plus quote when little on the storefront differs by market, so check these cases before anyone scopes a build.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- What we’ve seen
- The recurring failure is localized content ownership. The build ships market-aware templates and then nobody is accountable for the German size guide, so the market launches with English copy in a German checkout.
- Where we disagree
- Multi-market is sold as a platform capability you switch on. The platform part genuinely is close to that. The storefront part is a content operations commitment, and that is the part that fails after launch rather than during it.
- What this page adds
- the actual Managed Markets fee structure and the continental-US eligibility gate, plus the reason multi-market shows up as a running margin cost rather than as a large new line on the parent's development item.

- Is Managed Markets worth it for a brand doing under $5M in international sales, or is that too small to justify the fee?
Managed Markets, where Global-e acts as merchant of record, is not too small a bet under $5M of international sales.
- Is Managed Markets exclusive to Shopify Plus, or can Advanced-plan merchants use it too?
Managed Markets, Shopify's merchant-of-record service for cross-border sales, is not exclusive to Shopify Plus, because Shopify requires only the Basic plan or higher: Basic, Grow and Advanced stores pay 3.5% per transaction, against 3.25% on Plus (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- What's a reasonable QA budget or time allocation, as a percentage of total dev time, for checkout testing on a mid-market Shopify Plus store?
Checkout quality assurance (QA) is budgeted by test matrix, not as a percentage of development hours.
- What's the actual difference between 'multi-language' and 'multi-market' in Shopify's terminology? Are they always linked?
Multi-market and multi-language are separate Shopify settings, linked only through domains, because each market uses a domain and languages are assigned to domains (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
