Is Shopify Translate & Adapt good enough for a mid-market multi-language store, or do I still need a paid translation app?
Short answer
Shopify Translate & Adapt is free (Shopify App Store) and good enough for most mid-market stores; only two of its limits decide most cases. It auto-translates two languages by default, eight in 12 European countries (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). It can't reach app content outside Shopify's translatable resources (Shopify Help Center), so pay for those gaps or workflow.

Deploi’s call
Translate & Adapt is good enough at translation and short at workflow. Deploi's Langify vs. Translate & Adapt record scores the native app WAIT (verified October 2026). So enable it, ship your locales, and revisit only once a workflow gap has a name and a weekly cost.
WaitStay on Translate & Adapt alone when
- You publish no more languages than Translate & Adapt automates for your store: two by default in the US and Canada, eight in 12 European countries (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Customers in translated markets see only Shopify content: products, collections, pages, metafields and theme text.
- A one-locale trial turns up no workflow gap your team can name and price, the test Deploi's Langify vs. Translate & Adapt record sets (October 2026).
BuyAdd a paid translation app when
- Customers in translated markets see app text that Translate & Adapt can't reach, such as review widgets or loyalty tiers.
- You run more languages than Translate & Adapt automates, launch products weekly and have no developer to run an owned translation pipeline.
- Someone must approve translations before they publish, or brand terms need glossary rules to stay constant.

Where does Translate & Adapt stop for a mid-market store?
Shopify Translate & Adapt stops in three places for a mid-market store: automatic languages, app content and custom checkout wording. Most other content it handles at no charge, because the app is free and takes as many manual translations as you add (Shopify App Store, October 2026). Tags, product images and collection filters are among Shopify's listed exceptions (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
| Stopping point | What Shopify says | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic translation | 2 languages by default, the US and Canada included; 8 in 12 European countries | Further languages are added by hand, by file import or with a paid app |
| App content | No translation for app content outside Shopify's translatable resource types and storefront locale files | That app text stays in your default language |
| Checkout wording | Pre-translated in 33 languages; default text editable in Settings > Checkout | Custom translated wording needs an app or a file import |
Shopify's pages disagree on the checkout row. Its language requirements page says: "Making additional customizations to the language in the checkout requires third-party apps" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Its checkout translation page also lets you import your own translations from comma-separated values (CSV) files (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
Which Translate & Adapt limits don't force a paid app?
The selling-language ceiling, manual translation volume and email notifications are Translate & Adapt limits that don't force a paid app on a mid-market store. A store sells in up to 20 languages on Basic, Grow and Advanced, and up to 30 on Shopify Plus (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A brand running four to eight languages is nowhere near either number, so the ceiling never forces a purchase. Market limits are a separate setting, covered in how Shopify's language and market limits differ.
Manual translation has no cap: Translate & Adapt lets you "manually add as many translations as you wish" (Shopify App Store, October 2026). Email notifications stay inside Translate & Adapt too. In Translate & Adapt you can "add or edit email notification translations" for each language you've added (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A customer then receives notifications "in the language that they placed their order in", so order emails need no second tool.
Why does app content decide most mid-market cases?
App content decides most mid-market cases because Translate & Adapt reaches only text an app stores inside Shopify's translatable resources. Shopify says Translate & Adapt can't translate third-party app content "that isn't hosted as a Shopify translatable resource type or storefront locale file" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Shopify's Admin API (application programming interface) lists 29 translatable resource types in its 2026-10 version, metaobjects and theme app embeds among them (Shopify developer docs, October 2026).
So whether your review widget, loyalty tier names, size chart and upsell copy appear in French is not a decision Translate & Adapt makes. Each app vendor made it when they chose where their app keeps its text. Ask each vendor one question before you buy anything: does the app keep its storefront text in a Shopify translatable resource, such as a metaobject, or in a storefront locale file? A yes puts the text within Translate & Adapt's reach; a no leaves it to the vendor's own translation feature or a paid translation app. Some translation apps take another route: ConveyThis says it translates "text that other apps add to your pages" (ConveyThis, October 2026). How ConveyThis compares with Translate & Adapt weighs that route for a mid-market brand.
Who genuinely needs a paid translation app?
Stores that genuinely need a paid translation app have one of three gaps: more languages than Translate & Adapt automates, app-generated copy, or a review workflow. Translation quality alone is not a reason to pay.
- Languages within your automatic limit, Shopify content only. Translate & Adapt is enough. Its free automatic translation covers two languages by default in the US and Canada, eight in 12 European countries (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- More languages than Translate & Adapt automates. A paid app buys machine translation past the limit, so switching from a paid app to Translate & Adapt saves its fee only by moving that work to your team. Deploi's translation record scores an owned AI translation pipeline CUSTOMIZE instead at three to five languages with a content-heavy catalog (October 2026).
- App-generated copy in translated markets. Translate & Adapt can't reach it, so compare which paid apps reach app content, and from which plan, then check whether Langify still earns its fee at renewal.
- A team that reviews translations. Shopify's store permissions list no permission for translations or languages (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so handing translation upkeep to an agency starts with an access decision. Deploi's AI translation review record scores an app's built-in review screens BUY at one or two locales under 10% international revenue (October 2026). From three locales it scores an owned review loop CUSTOMIZE.
When is buying a paid translation app the wrong move?
Buying a paid translation app is the wrong move when Translate & Adapt or Shopify's admin already closes the gap, because then the fee buys nothing new.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- What we’ve seen
- In scoping conversations the stated reason for wanting a paid app is almost always translation quality, and the reason that survives ten minutes of questions is almost always app content or review workflow. Those are different purchases at different prices, and only one of them starts at $17.50.
- Where we disagree
- The category argues this as free-versus-paid and points at machine translation quality. That framing is a year out of date. The engines are close enough that quality is no longer the axis. The axis is reach: which objects on your storefront the tool is architecturally permitted to touch. Ask a vendor which of your installed apps it can translate, by name, before you pay them.

Follow-up questions
What's inside the number
- What's the actual difference between 'multi-language' and 'multi-market' in Shopify's terminology? Are they always linked?
Multi-market and multi-language are separate Shopify settings, linked only through domains, because each market uses a domain and languages are assigned to domains (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
How it compares
- Is Langify still worth paying for now that Shopify's native Translate & Adapt is free and improving?
Langify still earns its $17.50 Basic fee where customers see third-party app content, or where you machine-translate past Translate & Adapt's limit (Langify listing, October 2026).
- What's ConveyThis, and how does it compare to Shopify's native Translate & Adapt for a mid-market brand?
ConveyThis is a third-party layer that translates a Shopify storefront as shoppers load it (ConveyThis's page, October 2026).
- What's the difference between Langify, LangShop, and Shopify's native translation tools in 2026?
Langify, LangShop and Shopify Translate & Adapt differ in 2026 on one thing that matters: third-party app content.
If you're not the typical case
- Do I still need a paid translation app if my Shopify brand only sells in English-speaking markets (US, UK, Canada, Australia)?
English-only brands selling in the US, UK, Canada and Australia need no paid translation app.
What to do next
- Can I outsource ongoing translation maintenance to an agency instead of using Translate & Adapt's self-serve tools directly?
Yes: an agency can run ongoing Shopify translation maintenance, though Shopify has no translation permission to grant.
Related questions
- Is switching from a third-party translation app to Shopify's own native Translate & Adapt a genuine cost-optimization move, or does it just shift the cost elsewhere?
Switching to Shopify Translate & Adapt saves the whole subscription only within its automatic-language limit; past it, the cost moves into translation labor.
